Parkes Welcomes Three New Citizens

June 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Three new Australian citizens were welcomed by Mayor Ken Keith at the Council meeting on Tuesday. Marius Barnard and his two sons Marnus (10) and Marno (8) received their citizenship certificates after taking the oath. The
family moved to Parkes in September 2012 from South Africa. Marius is a mechanic, and his sons go to Parkes East Public School.

The Mayor congratulated them on becoming citizens saying: “When you make the decision to become Australian, you are deciding to become part of a nation which is not your homeland, but which you have decided to adopt as your own. When you become Australian it is important you don’t forget the language, customs or culture of your country of birth. They can add to the cultural riches of 21st century Australia.”

The Mayor also read a letter from the Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton. “Thank you for taking this important
step today. Australian citizenship confers on you great benefits, but equally rights and obligations. Congratulations
and best wishes.”

After the ceremony Marius said it was a wonderful feeling to be a citizen. It has taken a while, but it will give my life stability and I can start making a real contribution to Australia.”

Both sons were very excited and said it was a good feeling, and that they were proud to be South African and Australian. According to the 2016 census statistics more than 20% of Parkes residents have been born overseas, and ten languages other than English are spoken by them.

The Wonder Of The Elvis Express

June 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

It might be a ‘mystery train’ for the uninitiated, but thousands of fans would happily attest to why the Elvis Express has been awarded the top spot globally. The extremely popular train journey from Sydney to the Parkes Elvis Festival has been named the top one-of-a-kind rail journey across the globe.

Escape.com.au has revealed the nine top train trips that offer travellers a unique experience with the Elvis Express journey listed as number one. “Though departing only once annually, the Elvis Express is undoubtedly among the most unique train rides in Australia,” according to the Escape.com.au website.

“Transporting hundreds of Elvis fans each January to the Southern hemisphere’s biggest Elvis Presley festival, the train is a moving celebration of the life and career of rock ’n’ roll’s beloved King. “Once the doors close on the legendary TrainLink service passengers can expect non-stop performances, games and dressups over the seven hour, 365km ride. With a raft of hip-thrusting Elvis impersonators and bee-hived ‘Priscillas’ singing and shimmying  their way to Parkes.”

Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathy Treasure said: “It’s wonderful to have the Elvis Express experience recognised as
the most unique train ride. We work yearround with NSW TrainLink to ensure the service offers festival visitors a one-of-a-kind journey.”

NSW TrainLink Acting Chief Operating Officer Candice Heine said: “We’re very proud to be able to support the Parkes Elvis Festival by offering a unique way to travel to the five-day extravaganza.” The Elvis Express will once again form part of the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival with tickets going on sale on the day of the festival program launch on 10th September.

Parkes Boys Are State Champions!

June 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes not only hosted the NSW State Hockey Championships last weekend, but the U15 Boys team of Parkes Hockey Incorporated won the Division 2 state title!

Parkes 1 defeated Bathurst 2-0 in the final and will move into Division 1 next year. Parkes 2 made it to the semi-final. Parkes 1 coach Glen Johnston said it was an ecstatic feeling to be state champions. “It was a really good result after ten weeks of hard work. The boys deserve this reward as they are eager to listen and learn.” The team scored 22 goals in six games and only had two goals scored against them – “another incredible achievement,” said Glen.

To top off a very successful weekend four players have been named in the 2019 NSW U15 Boys squad. They are Jack Westcott, Jacob Chambers, Hugh Daley and Austin MacGregor. Parkes Hockey has received very positive feedback on the first hosting of a state championship with Hockey NSW thanking them and all the volunteers for the hard work and putting on a “stunner for everyone”.

Top Five Tips To Get You In The Mood…

June 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Sometimes the thought of starting a project can literally stop people in their tracks. Here are my five top tips to get you inspired.
1. Never be afraid to ask for help! Asking a professional will give you confidence to achieve the result you want.
2. Always have an idea before you start shopping or making decisions. Create a style file from magazine or internet pictures.
3. An inspiration piece can be the perfect starting point. There is usually one key element that stands out and this can be used to select all the other pieces to keep cohesion to the final look.
4. Know your budget to avoid the end result getting blown out of control. You can achieve a great look at any price.
5. Have a clear idea of what you want to do in the completed room. Function must meet form to give you a sense of accomplishment at the end.

Decorating and making our dreams reality in our homes should be a fun experience. I hope with these ideas you will feel more empowered to take that initial step and confident that you are not alone.

Do You Suffer From Hip Pain?

June 21, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Studies have shown that one in four women over the age of 50 suffer from pain on the outside of the hip, and this is particularly true for active women. Gluteal tendinopathy or more specifically, gluteus medius tendinopathy is a common cause of lateral hip pain.

Your gluteal tendons are the tough fibres that attach your gluteal muscles to the hip bone. It is thought that gluteal tendinopathy is more common in women over 50, due to the shape of the female pelvis and hip bones, along with the hormones that influence the female body during menopause. Tendinopathies develop when load to the tendon is increased too quickly such as an increase in exercise particularly in sports like running or hiking.

When tendons become stressed small micro tears form, which encourage inflammatory chemicals and swelling. These will quickly heal if managed appropriately. However, if the loading continues (working through the pain), the formation of these micro tears can exceed the rate of repair. The result is a tendinopathy, causing pain and dysfunction.

Unfortunately, many gluteal tendinopathies are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated as a bursitis with corticosteroid injections. Whilst this may provide some temporary pain relief, it is only useful if the pain free time is used to exercise and strengthen the tendon appropriately. If injections are not combined with strengthening exercises for the gluteal muscles the tendinosis is likely to continue with return to activity.

A gradual loading programme aimed at strengthening the gluteal muscles and improving the biomechanics of the female hip is the most effective treatment for long term relief of lateral hip pain.

For the fitness of you.

Our Gal -Ann Olson

June 21, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? Mark and I have lived in Parkes since 1990. We wouldn’t live anywhere else. Our community is the centre of most things we do.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work at Parkes High School in the special education area and believe that it is the greatest asset in our town. Our community is fortunate to have access to this support. Each day is different!

What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? I’m passionate about access and opportunity for country women and have been involved with the CWA to further this. Our community has a great Pottery Club that I really enjoy belonging to. Last but not least, I’ve been involved with the Parkes Picnic Races for years and love the excitement and anticipation of each meeting.

If you could have a superpower what  would it be? I would choose a great dose of kindness every day for everyone’s family if I had a wish.

What is your pet hate? I don’t hate but would like to banish single use items like plastic as I abhor waste. I really like the mantra: reduce, reuse, recycle.
