Two Men And A Challenge

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Two Parkes men are on a mission to help save other women’s lives after they lost a very important person in their lives on Christmas Eve.

Joel and Talan formed Team Breaden last month and shaved their heads on Monday in memory of their mother and mother-inlaw, Leanne Breaden. Leanne, also known as Maggie and former Principal of Parkes Public School, lost her 13-month battle with ovarian cancer in December last year.

“We have been overwhelmed with the response from Parkes residents, friends and family who have helped us raise more than $7,000 in just over three weeks,” said Talan. The amazing response from the community quickly wiped out their targets of how short they would cut their hair, and on Monday their trendy hairstyles landed on the floor of Adele’s Salon when Adele Hawke used number 0 to give them a buzz cut.

As Leanne looked on with her familiar smile from a framed photo on the counter, Talan went first under Adele’s razor. It is the fact that Leanne, like so many others with ovarian cancer, was not diagnosed until it had spread throughout her abdomen, that has encouraged Joel and Talan to raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).

“There are too many similar stories, and that’s why we’re raising money to help find an early detection test, and to create awareness among women of the signs and symptoms,” said Talan. “Everyone has a mum, sister, aunt or cousin.

Less than 30% of women diagnosed at a late stage will survive more than five years.” Leanne was diagnosed in late 2016 and underwent chemotherapy and major surgery, only to have the cancer return almost immediately with a terminal diagnosis.

Joel said they hoped to reach $10,000 and planned to hold two fun days in the near future. The donation line on the everydayhero website will stay open until August. If you would like to support their cause, go to www.everydayhero.com.au pop into Adele’s Salon or at any of the local schools where there are collection envelopes.

Parkes Public School joined the challenge this week with a mufti day and gold coin collection in support of Team Breaden.

Norman Lindsay Exhibit: Locals of Parkes and the wider community are invited to experience a wonderful and intimate exhibition of the renowned Australian artist and writer, Norman Lindsay. Passionate about the creative arts since he was a boy, Parkes local Peter Tom has been collecting sketches, posters, etchings, block printing and limited-edition copies of Norman Lindsay’s work, as well as many early editions of his numerous books. Parkes Library is working with skilled consultant, Margot Jolly, to arrange and install the exhibition in a way that shares Peter’s love of Norman Lindsay with the community. The exhibition opened last night and
runs to 27th March just before Easter.

Road Safety Message: Parkes Shire Council has recently revamped a series of radio advertisements as part of the ‘Help Keep Parkes Kids Safe’ campaign to address road safety issues around Parkes primary schools. The advertisements outline the 40km/h school speed zone times, what ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ signs mean, as well as the correct use of Children’s Crossings. “Each of the four primary schools selected four students to record the radio advertisements. At 2PK/ROK-FM, announcer Elliot Kinsella gave the students a tour of the 2PK-ROK FM radio station, before putting them through their paces and recording their ads. They all did a great job,” said Council’s Road Safety Officer, Melanie Suitor. Middleton Public School Principal, David Simes, said the students really enjoyed the experience. The radio advertisements commenced in early February and will run for the remainder of the first term.

PCS Back At Birdman Rally To Defend Title

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The first time they came third, last year they won – how far will they fly this Sunday? Nine senior Design and Technology students of Parkes Christian School will once again be competing at the 2018 Moomba Birdman Rally in Melbourne on Sunday.

The Year 11 and 12 students have lofty standards to live up to after winning the Flying Class section last year. “We managed to fly 11 metres, which was enough to take out the trophy for longest flight of the day,” said Design and Technology teacher Jason Wynstra. “It was such a buzz to come away with the win and the students are really excited to try and defend their title this year.”

First intended as a fun way for Design and Technology students to engage with their classwork in a practical way, the students now take the competition very seriously. “A major component of the Design and Technology syllabus is problem solving, so I thought this competition would be a great opportunity to explore that,” said Jason.

The problem they need to solve is how to construct a glider light enough to fly into the river off a small platform, but sturdy enough to safely support a pilot. “Watching the students come up with creative ways of solving this problem is just so satisfying as a teacher,” said Jason. “They use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills to help them create a top-quality aircraft.”

While making the 10-hour trip from Parkes to Melbourne may seem like a lot, the school is more than happy to take part and provide a unique experience for its students. “We’re the only school in NSW taking part in the rally,” said high school coordinator Greg Ballantyne. “We are committed to providing real-world experiences for our students rather than just burying them in textbooks and theory. It’s a far better way for students to learn and they share an experience they will never forget.”

According to Greg there might be more exciting projects on the way for the school. “We have a project that Google is very interested in, and another that I have to keep under wraps for now,” he said. “But when that one hopefully takes place later this year, it will be out of this world!”

As the event is a charity fundraiser too, the PCS team is supporting Currajong Disability Services this year. If you would like to sponsor them, go to https://birdmanrally.gofundraise.com.au/page/JasonWynstra

Not A Waste Of Time

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

A group of dedicated volunteers met at Lion’s Park on Sunday morning to pick up rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day. Clean Up Australia Day was established in 1990 to improve the health of the environment, with a side benefit of beautifying the community by keeping the streets clean.

The volunteers, in groups of two or more, headed out to a variety of sites around Parkes, including Memorial Hill and Bushman’s Hill, Forbes Road, Orange Road and PAC Park. After braving the heat for three to four hours, the volunteers returned, having collected over 30 large bags of rubbish.

The main types of rubbish collected were glass and plastic bottles; confectionery wrappers; chip packets; take-away containers, both cardboard and polystyrene; straws; and cigarette butts (in some areas). Some of the rarer types of rubbish included a mattress, a blown-out truck tyre, and a blood-stained butcher knife. A large quantity of paper and polystyrene was found at the Industrial Estate.

Two volunteers tackled PAC Park and collected five bags of rubbish, mostly bottles, that had been deposited in the PAC Park waterway, just before it enters Goobang Creek, and there are still more bottles there to be picked up. Many of the bottles had lodged in the waterway after the flooding of September 2016, however other rubbish that has been left in the park and surrounds also ends up making its way to this waterway.

Perhaps, with the arrival of the new Return and Earn vending machine in town, there will be many less bottles in next year’s collection.

Council will be welcoming over 200 delegates to Parkes next week for the 2018 Local Government NSW Tourism Conference. Economic benefits from hosting the event include around 200 motel rooms booked for tourism managers, mayors, councillors, industry professionals and sponsors from around NSW. The conference includes workshops, case studies, panel discussions and site visits to Trundle, Peak Hill, the Henry Parkes Centre and The Parkes Radio Telescope.

Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer is calling on young amateur actors to audition for the annual mock crash demonstration, which aims to improve the attitudes and behaviours of young drivers and passengers. Auditions take place on 21st March at 5pm in the Council Chambers. Contact 6861 2364.

Council crews completed construction of three new concrete causeways along Cooka Hills Road. The $150,000 project included the removal of the old causeways and reconstruction to improve access and safety and withstand flooding.

An intimate collection of works by Australia’s greatest all-round genius artist and writer Norman Lindsay is hosted by Parkes Shire Library, and includes features, sketches, posters, etchings, block printing and limited edition copies of Norman Lindsay’s work, as well as early editions of his books. The exhibition will run until 27th March.

PopUp Op Shop Popular

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

About 100 people supported the PopUp Op Shop at the Parkes Christian School last Saturday. There was a great sense of community and laughter as women shopped and shared afternoon tea. In addition, more than $2,000 was raised to support mothers and babies in desperate need through Compassion Australia.

Organiser Katrina Harris thanked all the people who contributed to make the afternoon a success by donating or helping to set up and pack up. “We had more clothes than I imagined and were able to support the work of Georgie’s Boutique in town by donating what was left to them. While it was hard work, it was great fun and maybe we’ll do it again!”

Donations are still welcome for Compassion Australia at Parkes Christian School, or via email to Katrina Harris at k.harris@parkescs.nsw.edu.au

Your Health Matters…

The Flu Shot Is Not Just For You!

Parkes Pharmacy will once again be administering the flu vaccination this year via our trusted and accredited pharmacists. These will be conducted in a safe and professional environment in our EasyClinic consultation room. And get this – you don’t need a script!

Why should you get a flu shot? The flu causes about 3,500 deaths and 18,000 hospitalisations yearly in Australia. It is responsible for around 10% of workplace sick days taken. The more people who get the flu shot, the less it can be spread through our community. The single most effective way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated between March and May.

Who’s eligible? Anyone above the age of 18 years. If you are over the age of 65 years, or pregnant, you are eligible to receive a free flu vaccination but you must see your GP to get it.

So how does it work? All you have to do is call to make an appointment or come into store at a time most convenient to you. There is a consent form to fill out and a short waiting time, and once you’ve been jabbed, it is recommended that you stay in store and browse for 10 minutes in case of an allergic reaction.

So, don’t delay! The waiting list has begun and the vaccinations will arrive at Parkes Pharmacy very soon. Updates will be loaded via our Facebook page. See you soon for your flu shot!

Don’t Be Shy, Just Ask

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on NSW roads. Last year it contributed to 72 fatal crashes in the state. The ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ Scheme targets all drivers of cars, caravans and heavy vehicles to take a break. The scheme was launched last week for its latest season running from the start of March to the end of May.

The scheme offers drivers, who have travelled more than 100 kilometres from the address on their drivers licence, a free cup of tea or coffee from the 94 participating businesses in western and south western NSW. Over 6,000 free cuppas have been given away since its inception in 2010.

Drivers can use the Free Cuppa website www.freecuppa.com.au to find participating businesses near them. Eligible drivers can also enter the draw to win a prize and fuel vouchers to the value of $600. Don’t be shy – just ask for your free cuppa!

Do Not Leave Your Head In The Sand

March 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Over 3,300 men die each year from prostate cancer in Australia – why? Despite the signs and warnings, it seems like men do not want to know. Whether it is the embarrassment of the physical examination or the fear of the unknown, but they leave it until it is too late.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia was formed to assist men to overcome their fears and to take to necessary steps to address this issue. The Parkes Prostate Cancer Awareness and Support Group were formed three
years ago to be a support to those going through the journey and to make men aware of the possibilities.

To this end the group is sponsoring a Men’s Health Evening in the Starlight Room of the Parkes Services Club on Wednesday, 21st March at 7pm. The Guest speakers are Dr Hiwa Qool, (GP) Dr Tim Nicholson (Urologist), Dr Rob Zielniski (Oncologist) and Dr John Trollor (PCFA Ambassador). They will be supported by Lindy Ostini (Regional
Prostate Nurse) and Louise Linke (Continence Nurse Practitioner). State Group Leaders and members of the Foundation of Australia will also be in attendance.

Men, do not leave your head in the sand! This is a wonderful opportunity to come and listen to advice from men who are considered the best in their field.
