Parkes Elvis Festival Calls For Volunteers

March 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Rachael Westcott has volunteered for the Parkes Elvis Festival. There are more than 100 volunteer roles to fill, and it is open to people from all walks of life with different skills and experiences. To apply visit www.parkeselvisfestival.com.au.

After 18 months of Elvis leaving the building, Parkes Elvis Festival is back and on the lookout for volunteers to help make this year’s event a success.

Organisers are calling for the community to get onboard and help deliver the king-sized program filled with more than 150 Elvis and Speedway inspired events.

Volunteering at the festival is open to people from all walks of life, and with different skills and experiences. There are many ways to volunteer, including setting up event spaces and signage, ushering guests, assisting with a multitude of events both inside and outdoors and transporting VIPs.

“The change of date along with impacts of Covid-19 have resulted in a need for new volunteers,” said Festival Director, Tiffany Steel. “We have more than 100 volunteer roles to fill. If you have specific interests, we can place you in a role where you can learn and get on-the-job experience whilst helping on one of the most popular festivals in Australia.” said Tiffany.

There are ways local businesses can help too. Employee volunteering programs are a great way for businesses to show their corporate social responsibility and provide employees with the opportunity to contribute to the community. Local organisations such as Northparkes Mines give back to the community by providing volunteers each year.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be involved with the sponsorship of the festival’s incredible volunteer program,” said General Manager of Central West Credit Union Brett Hartin.

“Volunteers are the life blood of regional areas, and this is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community.”

In the spirit of Elvis, each volunteer will receive a t-shirt, hat, water bottle, bag and will get to have a whole lotta rockin’ and rollin’ fun.

To apply visit www.parkeselvisfestival.com.au. Volunteer inductions are on Saturday, 12 March from 10.00am – 11.30am and on Monday, 21 March from 6.00pm – 7.30pm at the Cooke Park Pavilion. Apply now to ensure you don’t miss out!

Anglican Parish Welcomes New Reverend

March 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Reverend Ben Mackay with Bron and their children Ella (11), James (9), and Elijah (3). They enjoy life with peo-ple, wide open spaces, camping, and anything that gets them outdoors.

The Anglican Parish of Parkes and Peak Hill has welcomed and embraced the Reverend Ben Mackay and his family who moved to Parkes in early January.

Ben’s formal welcome and commissioning will be held at St George’s Parkes tomorrow, 12th March, at 10am. The Bishop of the Diocese of Bathurst, Mark Calder will conduct the service, and a good friend of Ben’s from Bible college, the Reverend Andrew Thornhill, the minister at Coonabarabran, will bring a brief message from the Bible.

The church is very grateful for the Reverend Natalie Quince who lovingly cared for and led the church over the past two years while a search for a new minister took place. Natalie will continue to serve the church and the community.

Ben and his wife Bron are no strangers to this part of the world: before leaving for Bible College, Ben worked as a lawyer in Forbes – with Natalie as a colleague!

Ben said: “We are so looking forward to getting to know you all better and growing together into the likeness of our Lord Jesus, and continuing to be a light shining in the communities in which we live and work.”

Celebrating Women’s Achievements

March 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

The disappointment of cancelling the QUE Club’s major International Women’s Day (IWD) event was turned into an opportunity to celebrate Australian fashion designers at the March meeting.

Although IWD is a call to action to empower women, it is also a global celebration of women’s achievements on all levels, social, economic, cultural and political. Members enjoyed a presentation by Wendy Neville honouring the many Australian women of fashion including Carla Zampatti, Jenny Kee, Leona Edmiston, Lisa Ho, Anthea Crawford, Collette Dinnigan and more. Their histories were discussed, while several of members were brave enough to model clothes from previous decades.

While IWD was officially celebrated on Tuesday, Parkes women were treated to a program of pampering on Sunday at the Cooke Park Pavilion.

The day started with a very well attended movement and awareness session by Jen Harris followed by free coffee, live music and pop-up stalls.

This year’s theme for IWD was #BreakTheBias, with the focus on empowering women to forge their own path.

Some of the issues tackled by the NSW Women’s Week under the theme were increasing women’s financial independence, more opportunities for regional and rural women and promoting careers for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Weaving History Into Today

March 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Ronda Sharpe at the Henry Parkes Museum with her beautifully crafted art works.

Threads of the past were invoked at a recent weaving workshop held at the Henry Parkes Museum. Ronda Sharpe, a local Wiradjuri environmental artist, conducted a weaving workshop to introduce local community members to this art form.

On display were a considerable number of original woven art works created by Ronda and two stunning, woven artefacts from the museum’s collection. Ronda is working closely with the museum, assisting with the cataloguing of exhibits in textiles and First Nations’ artefacts.

The workshop began with a presentation by Ronda, outlining her journey into weaving. Her original interest was sparked when she began embracing her heritage and First Nations’ culture through experimentation with weaving, using data cables. Since then, her interest has blossomed with Ronda embarking on many studies culminating in achieving her Masters of Visual Arts from Griffith University in Queensland. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions, facilitated workshops and been involved in several professional development projects.

She has a strong connection to Country and believes in respecting and working with nature by looking at and listening to what nature is showing us. ‘Being on Wiradjuri country allows me to connect to my ancestors and Mother Earth who provides me with natural grasses and inspiration.

“My journey of creating contemporary fibre artworks that represent Wiradjuri cultural artefacts, and ‘Yindyamarra’ (respect) for Mother Earth, is evolving.”

Not only does Ronda use natural fibres in her work but she is passionate about recycling, creating ways to use a wide variety of off-cast materials. She has made statement works from coloured electrical and electronic cords and plugs, a large wall weaving using optical cables and aluminium rings, representing Wiradjuri Country and a delicate sphere from spectacles, highlighting the fragility of Mother Earth.

Wherever she travels, Ronda is committed to cleaning up the environment, reusing and recycling whatever she can. Consequently, she collects a range of items and then challenges herself to find creative ways of using the ‘saved’ pieces.

With the workshop being presented in an atmosphere of generous sharing and calmness, participants found the weaving process very relaxing and several left with completed works. From the same starting point, it was amazing to see the variety of shapes and items that emerged, from different shaped baskets to sculptures incorporating emu feathers.

Linger Longer: Patrons at the Parkes Elvis Festival will be able to enjoy longer trading hours at hotels and registered clubs this year. The NSW Government has extended trading hours during special sporting and cultural events in 2022 to give patrons extra time to socialise and enjoy major entertainment events while opening more trading opportunities for businesses. “We understand that it has been tough for hospitality venues recently which is why we are extending trading hours for certain events,” said Minister for Hospitality and Racing, Kevin Anderson. “This will create jobs and put valuable dollars back into the tills of small businesses.”

Overture Stars Lucy Durack and Josh Piterman.

April is going to be a huge month in Parkes and it starts on the 2nd when two of Australia’s leading stars on stage and screen will be gracing our very own Cooke Park Pavilion for an enormous celebration of musical theatre, with a light touch of opera.

Headlining Overture will be Lucy Durack and Josh Piterman supported by other well-known performers, as well as local and regional talent.

Lucy has been described as the human personification of sunshine. The former star of the Australian production of Wicked is one of the most sought after people in show business and juggles a busy career of being an actress, reality TV star, mum and queen of Australian musical theatre.

She was born in Perth and after graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts she was cast in a variety of productions, but became known for playing the role of Glinda in the Australian production of Wicked for four years from 2008 to 2011. She was revealed as the Cactus in the second season of The Masked Singer Australia.

Josh is an established musical theatre performer and classical crossover artist who has been working on Australian and UK stages over the past 15 years. He will be taking on the most coveted role as The Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera at the Sydney Opera House from August this year after his impressive West End debut in London in the same role in 2019.

His past credits include being a part of international pop opera group The Ten Tenors, Tony in the 2010 Australian production of Westside Story, Bustopher Jones/Gus/ Growltiger in the 2015/16 Australian season of Cats – a role that won him the Green Room Award for best supporting actor in a musical.

As part of the Overture performance, UpStage Australia have partnered with Parkes Shire Council to bring a series of workshops, classes and seminars to the Central West alongside the concert. Visit www.visitparkes.com.au for tickets and further information.
