Museum Hosts Double Premiere

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

International Mother Tongue Day was celebrated in Parkes on Monday with a launch at Henry Parkes Museum. Present (L-R) were Sean James Cassidy, Kyah Turnbull, Heney Parkes, President of the Parkes Historical Society Bruce Hall and Poet James Cassidy.

International Mother Tongue Day is a celebration of first languages worldwide. This initiative was started to support global languages, to prevent the decline or loss of languages and to preserve unique methods of communication.

Ub Ubbo Exchange marked International Mother Tongue Day on Monday, with the release of an original song and film clip at the Henry Parkes Museum. Ub Ubbo Exchange has been releasing original songs for Mother Tongue Day since 2013.

This year’s song, To Chaos From Clarity, was a collaboration drawing many different contributors together. Sean James Cassidy conceptualised the project. Sean’s friend from student days and supporter of Ub Ubbo Exchange, Dion Buck, produced the instrumental background. Sean’s father Jim Cassidy, wrote a poem to create the lyrics and Kerrie Peden wrote the melody. Kyah Turnbull’s vocals featured while Jason Nacho Murchie edited the work.

The song takes the form of a letter explaining how the learning from experience shapes us, that what begins as the chaos within emerges into a place of clarity. It acknowledges our opposing natures but seeks to affirm our differences while encouraging our ability to work together to co-operatively achieve solutions and success.

Also launched, was an accompanying film clip with the animation, by Miguel Valenzuela, of the logo of the Central West Active Citizen Program. This initiative, facilitated by NSW Police, builds rapport with and engages local indigenous youth in community activities.

Kyah Turnbull was part of this program and Senior Constable Daniel Greef said Kyah was proof of its success. She is studying at TAFE, teaching Wiradjuri language at Parkes Public School, is a member of the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group and is developing her music career.

To Chaos From Clarity is part of a chain of songs supporting indigenous voices through music. It will feature on an album of 12 songs to be released by Ub Ubbo Exchange later in the year. Each song is influenced by the sounds of nature and each has a theme linked to an object or occurrence whose sound is sampled in the music.

Meet David Heins…

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

MEET DAVID HEINS… I came to Parkes some years ago when I was the senior construction engineer for the new NorthParkes underground mine. The company I worked for, SKM, had the EPCM contract to install the materials handling system. I came back again last year as a senior project engineer on the Parkes Bypass working for Transport NSW. The construction is done by the contractor, Georgiou. I really like Parkes. It is a very friendly town. My re-interest in music started two years ago when I had a go of my son’s trumpet. This led to lessons. Further to this I sensed that music bands, especially in country areas, have a real Australian feel about them and being part of it is enjoyable. The social side of the band has also been a revelation with new friendships formed. A good band needs a good music leader, and Parkes is fortunate to have Duncan Clement (left in photo with David Heins).

Men’s Bowls

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Last weekend the club hosted a 2 Bowls Triples Tournament with ten different clubs competing. It was great to welcome bowlers from Orange, Forbes, Parkes Railway Club, Greenwell Point, Yass, Manildra, Leeton, Belrose and Warilla.

This meant 60 bowlers competed in three games of 15 ends on Saturday and two on Sunday.

At the mid-way point on Saturday evening the team of Nathan Reynolds, Dave Reilly (members of our club) and Glenn Beveridge from Warilla had the lead on 45 Points. The team from Belrose were in second place on 40 points and Team Grant and Team Frame (both from our club) were equal third on 39 points.

On Sunday morning the weather gods were not quite as kind as they had been and, in a strong wind, positions changed. Team Harris and Team Johnson (both representing our club) won both of their games to get amongst the prize money while Team Frame and Team Belrose could not hold their form and dropped off the leader board.

In the final wash up the prize winners were:
1st place – Nathan Reynolds, Dave Reilly and Glenn Beveridge on 73 points;
2nd Place – Dave Johnson, Jo Simpson and Mike Simpson on 60 points;
3rd place – Maree Grant, Tom Furey and Brian Townsend on 58 points;
4th Place – Wilbur Harris, Guy Ellery and Steve Turner on 57 points.

Congratulations to all the prize winners and in fact all the bowlers, it was great to see such a good turn-out and we look forward to welcoming all the visitors at our next event.

Such events cannot go on without a lot of generosity and hard work behind the scenes from a lot of people. I must mention our major sponsor, Johno Johnson and the Railway and Commercial Hotels. Thank you for your support. Also, thanks to Power Tools +, Parkes Hydraulics and Woolworths.

I should also thank the volunteers who put in so much time keeping the greens and club surrounds in such great shape and all the other volunteers who helped to make this weekend such a great success, in particular Tom Furey, Martin Tighe and Col Miller.

The date on ‘Twosday’ this week was very special: 22/02/2022. Do you have a special date or number that tells a story or have a significant meaning?

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Colleen Mitchell: My wedding day this year on 25th November will be very special as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary after getting married in 1972.

Sylvia Glendenning: The 11th of January has turned out to be an important date in my life as all sorts of things have happened on this date. I got my driver’s licence, and I went overseas to name but two events.

Adrianne Brown: I like the number 33 as it is the new address of the CanAssist shop in Court Street, and we’ve been very lucky to find this venue. It has been such a good move and the shop is doing fantastic.

Saturday Sounds Hit The Right Chord

The free family concert at the Cooke Park Pavilion on Saturday was a big hit with about 400 people enjoying the excellent line-up of entertainment.

Many people brought along picnic rugs and nibbles, while the food vans were also very popular.

The program started off with the performers of Parkes School of Dance setting the tone for a great concert.

The local talent showcase continued with Amitie and Gracey Denham-Jones before the Canberra-based band Plump took to the stage to get people dancing.

The night was a great ‘dress rehearsal’ for Overture on 2nd April and the Parkes Elvis Festival from 20 – 24th April. The feedback has been excellent with a lot of praise especially for the sound and lighting which made the concert spectacular.

Our Parks, Gardens And Reserves Need Your Help

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

The community is invited to join Council staff for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, 6th March at Lions Park from 8am.

We all know the value of our local parks, gardens and reserves in the Parkes Shire, and next Sunday, 6th March residents can join the nation-wide effort on Clean Up Australia Day to help protect these environments.

“It has never been more important to roll up our sleeves to maintain and preserve our natural environment and recreational spaces,” said Parkes Shire Mayor Cr Ken Keith OAM.

“With our consumer habits shifting towards more online shopping, the increased use of disposable face masks and rapid antigen tests, and significant growth in single-use plastics across Australia, the natural environment is suffering.

“By doing our bit to remove and reduce rubbish accumulating in our local parks, roadsides, bushland and waterways, we can ensure that our natural assets will be there to enjoy well into the future.”

Parkes Shire residents can participate in Clean Up Australia Day in Parkes, with registrations taking place at Lions Park from 8am, or register at www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Community members are encouraged to gather their friends, family and colleagues to join Council staff on the day.

All participants will be allocated a clean-up site or can discuss cleaning up a particular area with the site supervisor on the day. Participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes, sun-safe clothing, and bring their own gloves, sunscreen and water bottle.

Cowra Printing Business Launches Website That Rivals Major Players

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Central West business Yellow House Cowra Design and Print has launched a state-of-the-art new website that has all of the functions of other global printing companies.

Yellow House Cowra Manager

Joshua Matic said he commissioned the new website to be created so his business could match the services Vistaprint offers, but printed locally right here in the Central West.

The website has a huge variety of functions, including online ordering, a contact form for quotes and enquires, samples, and even design templates where customers can design their own print job on the website, submit and pay for the job.

All online orders can be shipped anywhere in Australia.

With the COVID-19 pandemic of the last two years forcing a “re-think” in the way businesses operate, Joshua said this new website was all about innovating his business to not only encourage locals to shop locally, but also attract business from outside of the region.

“With COVID-forced lockdowns and restrictions taking an economic toll, many people have been shopping around for the best deals, even if this means not shopping locally,” he said.

“This means it has been more important than ever for all businesses to find other ways of not only retaining their regular, local customers, but also attracting more from other areas to maintain or even increase their business.

“This is what our new website is all about. Anyone from anywhere in the world can now shop for all of their graphic design and printing needs with us at the click of a button, or even on their smart phone while they’re at home.”

The Yellow House Cowra website can be found at www.yellowhousecowra.com.

Cane toads are a serious biosecurity threat as they can cause devastating impacts on native wildlife and biodiversity, and pose serious threats to domestic animals. A suspected cane toad should be immediately reported to NSW Department of Primary Industries Biosecurity on 1800 680 244, online, or emailing a photo of the face and details to invasive.species@dpi.nsw.gov.au.

Breeding activity has been detected at multiple sites in the Macquarie Marshes near Coonamble following three years of drought, with frogs heard calling for mates throughout the wetland system. Scientists from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment visited 14 sites and heard frogs calling at 12 of them. Overture Excitement In Parkes

February 18, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Members of the Overture Youth Orchestra gathered last weekend for their first rehearsal at the new Cooke Park Pavilion in Parkes.

Parkes is gearing up to host an enormous celebration of musical theatre, with a touch of opera, at the new Cooke Park Pavilion under the beautiful night sky of Parkes at Overture on Saturday, 2nd April.

Last weekend saw the first rehearsal of the Overture Youth Orchestra at the new Cooke Park Pavilion in Parkes. The Youth Orchestra is made up of musicians from all over Central West New South Wales who were selected via a competitive audition process held over the past few months.

The Overture Youth Orchestra brings together regional children, some as young as nine, to create a spectacular sound resulting in an unforgettable experience for both the children and the audience at this inaugural event. With the help of UpStage, a not-for-profit organisation that establishes links between Sydney and local musicians, these children will receive mentorship via the program and a band of professional musicians they will meet at the joint rehearsal in March.

The Overture Youth Orchestra will join eight professional musicians from Sydney, a massed choir of choristers from all over the Central West, young emerging soloists as well as renowned headline artists.

Headlining the impressive event will be Lucy Durack, one of Australia’s leading stars of the stage and screen, and the dynamic Josh Piterman, who has graced the stage in lead roles in both Australia and the West End. Josh will be starring as The Phantom in the upcoming Opera Australia production of The Phantom of the Opera at the Sydney Opera House in mid-2022 onwards. Lucy and Josh will be supported by other well-known performers including Central West’s own Jarrod Draper, who is currently starring in Moulin Rouge, and Billie Palin as well as other local and regional talent.

Visitor Economy and Major Events Specialist Cathy Treasure said, “We are thrilled to be hosting an event of this calibre in our brand new Cooke Park Pavilion. An event of this size with this breadth of talent is an incredible coup for Parkes. It will help position Parkes as the new cultural centre of regional NSW.”

Overture not only brings some of the best voices in Australia to regional NSW, but it also gives local students the opportunity to work and perform alongside them.
