The four recipients of the 2018 Parkes Shire Council Cultural Grant Program were announced at the Council meeting on Tuesday. “The Parkes Shire Education, Cultural and Library Services Committee received a diverse range of applications from across the Shire. The Committee had $10,000 to disperse, with nearly $21,000 in grants requested from seven applicants” said Deputy Mayor Councillor Barbara Newton.

The recipients are: Peak Hill Show Society ($2,000) for show masterclasses in macramé, floral and cheese making; Parkes School of Dance ($3,000 ) for RAD exam workshops and hosting a guest ballet teacher; Parkes Public School Parents & Citizens Association ($2,500) for its 150 year celebration time capsule; and Tullamore War Memorial Hall ($2,500) to bring musical events to the town. According to Education, Cultural and Library Committee member, Councillor Bill Jayet, selecting the successful applicants was a tough task.

The Parkes Library was turned into a theatre last Thursday when more than 50 people arrived all dressed up for the first ever live stream event from the Sydney Opera House. In an unprecedented event for international Make Music Day, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra shared a global performance of Verdi’s Requiem live from the opera house.

Parkes was one of several public libraries in NSW joining the livestream to audiences all around the world. Australia joined the Make Music Day ‘party’ for the first time this year.

Three new Australian citizens were welcomed by Mayor Ken Keith at the Council meeting on Tuesday. Marius Barnard and his two sons Marnus (10) and Marno (8) received their citizenship certificates after taking the oath. The
family moved to Parkes in September 2012 from South Africa. Marius is a mechanic, and his sons go to Parkes East Public School.

The Mayor congratulated them on becoming citizens saying: “When you make the decision to become Australian, you are deciding to become part of a nation which is not your homeland, but which you have decided to adopt as your own. When you become Australian it is important you don’t forget the language, customs or culture of your country of birth. They can add to the cultural riches of 21st century Australia.”

The Mayor also read a letter from the Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton. “Thank you for taking this important
step today. Australian citizenship confers on you great benefits, but equally rights and obligations. Congratulations
and best wishes.”

After the ceremony Marius said it was a wonderful feeling to be a citizen. It has taken a while, but it will give my life stability and I can start making a real contribution to Australia.”

Both sons were very excited and said it was a good feeling, and that they were proud to be South African and Australian. According to the 2016 census statistics more than 20% of Parkes residents have been born overseas, and ten languages other than English are spoken by them.

1. Never be afraid to ask for help! Asking a professional will give you confidence to achieve the result you want.
2. Always have an idea before you start shopping or making decisions. Create a style file from magazine or internet pictures.
3. An inspiration piece can be the perfect starting point. There is usually one key element that stands out and this can be used to select all the other pieces to keep cohesion to the final look.
4. Know your budget to avoid the end result getting blown out of control. You can achieve a great look at any price.
5. Have a clear idea of what you want to do in the completed room. Function must meet form to give you a sense of accomplishment at the end.

Studies have shown that one in four women over the age of 50 suffer from pain on the outside of the hip, and this is particularly true for active women. Gluteal tendinopathy or more specifically, gluteus medius tendinopathy is a common cause of lateral hip pain.

Your gluteal tendons are the tough fibres that attach your gluteal muscles to the hip bone. It is thought that gluteal tendinopathy is more common in women over 50, due to the shape of the female pelvis and hip bones, along with the hormones that influence the female body during menopause. Tendinopathies develop when load to the tendon is increased too quickly such as an increase in exercise particularly in sports like running or hiking.

When tendons become stressed small micro tears form, which encourage inflammatory chemicals and swelling. These will quickly heal if managed appropriately. However, if the loading continues (working through the pain), the formation of these micro tears can exceed the rate of repair. The result is a tendinopathy, causing pain and dysfunction.

Unfortunately, many gluteal tendinopathies are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated as a bursitis with corticosteroid injections. Whilst this may provide some temporary pain relief, it is only useful if the pain free time is used to exercise and strengthen the tendon appropriately. If injections are not combined with strengthening exercises for the gluteal muscles the tendinosis is likely to continue with return to activity.

A gradual loading programme aimed at strengthening the gluteal muscles and improving the biomechanics of the female hip is the most effective treatment for long term relief of lateral hip pain.

The build-up for the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival has started with the announcement of Ted Torres Martin of the US as the feature artist.

The international Elvis tribute artist from Orlando, Florida is a multi-talented actor, singer, songwriter and musician, and will be performing in Australia for the very first time. He said on his Facebook page after the announcement last month: “I am very excited about headlining the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival in Australia, which is the biggest Elvis festival in the world! I am very honoured and look forward to entertaining all the wonderful Elvis fans in Australia in 2019!”

Ted is sure to leave fans ‘All Shook Up’ – the theme of the 27th festival. He will appear in four high-energy concerts celebrating Elvis Presley’s music at the Parkes Leagues Club from Thursday, 10th to Sunday, 13th January 2019. He will be backed by a dynamic live Elvis band to recreate the performances that made Elvis Presley the one and only King of Rock ‘n Roll.

In addition to the feature concert series, Ted will appear at the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival Street Parade, gospel service and Renewal of Vows Ceremony.

Ted is one of the top tribute artists in the world, and has toured the United States, Germany, Austria, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathy Treasure said: “Ted has a great reputation for putting on an unforgettable show and we look forward to seeing this when he takes to the stage in Parkes.”

Tickets for the 2019 feature concert series will be on sale following the 2019 Program Launch on Monday, 10th September.

The 27th annual Parkes Elvis Festival will take place from 9 to 13 January next year.

Economic benefits of the Inland Rail project are starting to roll in for the production and transport sectors.

Twenty new jobs were created at Rocla’s Braemar concrete sleeper plant in Mittagong after the company was awarded a $20 million contract to produce 200,000 sleepers for the first stage of the project in NSW.

“The 200,000 concrete sleepers required for the Parkes to Narromine section of Inland Rail is the first of 1.5 million that will be required to build the full 1,700 km length of the Inland Rail from Brisbane to Melbourne,” said Inland Rail Programme Delivery Director Simon Thomas.

Rail company Pacific National is also benefiting by making the first delivery of sleepers to Peak Hill last month. Over the next six months, Pacific National will run a train once a week from Mittagong to Peak Hill carrying around 9,000 concrete sleepers each trip. “When it comes to hauling bulk freight, rail is the safest, most efficient and environmentally- friendly mode of transport – to move 200,000 concrete sleepers by road would take a thousand B-double trucks,” said Pacific National President of Freight Andrew Adam.
