Parkes Phoenix

Our Bloke – Jacob Cass

February 5, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Parkes for nine years and I like the people the most. Parkes is full of interesting characters, people who are friendly and helpful with fantastic community spirit. It makes it an amazing place to live.

What is your favourite thing about your working life? They say when you love what you do you never work a day. There is nothing better than helping people to achieve their goals and my role as Country University Centre Manager allows me to do exactly that.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Much to my wife’s unhappiness somewhere sandy and warm!

What makes you laugh the most? Watching my two-year-old son learn about the world in only the way a toddler can, by placing it into his mouth to examine it.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Hobbies. I have far more hobbies than I have hours in a week and to take a whole day with no other responsibilities to do any of them would be amazing.

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? May 17th, 1980 to be at the premier of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and be one of the first people to know that (SPOILER ALERT) Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father.

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? Universal mental health leave for all workers. It’s such a prominent issue in society and needs to be tackled in its own right and not thrown in with other forms of leave.

Do you believe in random acts of kindness and which is your favourite one? I do! The pay it forward movement is something I find so interesting and I love seeing the stories. I only hope one day I can be in a position to help someone like that.

What is one thing you will never do again? Eat canned hotdogs! That idea should’ve been shut down before it ever went into production!

Be Seen

Last Saturday the very first parkrun volunteers took part in a trial run of the event to make sure everything is in place for tomorrow’s launch. They are (L-R) Peter Guppy, Vicki Barker, Sonia Bland, Jenny Short, Alice Drabsch, Ronel van Wyk, Dan Greef and Danielle Mill.

Beth and Bill Thomas, main organisers of the 8km dragon boat challenge race at Lake Endeavour last Saturday, hand over a trophy to Parkes Dragon Boat Club President Tony Gatt.

Three new members of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club took part in their very first event last Saturday doing the 8km challenge race at Lake Endeavour. They are Dave Pelchen, Justin Spalding and Trevor Whitaker.

What do you want to learn in Kindie this year at Parkes Christian School?

February 5, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Oliver Lord: How to use computers.
Ali Davis: How to draw a star and a ballerina.

John McConnell: How to draw a lizard and a snake.
Evie Flynn: I like drawing, but I would also like to learn to read and write.

Archie Westcott: I want to learn about letters and writing books.
Stephanie Flemming: We’ve already learned to count to ten and about lady bugs. I want to learn more about numbers.

Our Gal – Meaghan Kempson

Meaghan Kempson
Coach, Trainer or Manager of the year, Australia Day Awards

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Parkes for two years and love the sporting community.

What is your favourite thing about your working life? My colleagues make every day so enjoyable, not a day goes by without a laugh!

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Adelaide

What makes you laugh the most? People tripping over (without injuring themselves)

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Go to the Australian Open, watch some live tennis and have some drinks with friends/family.

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? To 2015, my first year of university. Made so many friends and created some great memories!

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? School hours from 7am to 1pm!

Do you believe in random acts of kindness and which is your favourite one? Yeah definitely! I love the idea of visiting aged care facilities and socialising with the elderly.

Be Seen at Australia Day

January 29, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Kasey and Toby Morgan tried out the COVID-safe cup cakes served after the official ceremony in Cooke Park on Tuesday.

The 3rd Parkes Scouts were responsible for the flag raising ceremony in Cooke Park. They are (L-R) Lachie Unger, Rebekah Smiroldo, Alex Lemon, Brad Lemon, Curdie Butler, Baily Wynstra, Marcus Hughes, Ciaran Smiroldo, Bethany Smiroldo and Mitchell Unger.

Jannette Powter and Margaret Rea enjoyed the day in Cooke Park.

Heather Wythes with her cousin Helen Ellison from Tamworth.

Annette Peterson and Holly Chalmers were all dressed up for the occasion.

Pauline and Hedley Nicholson, Joyce Mann and Kevin Ross at the Australia Day celebrations.

What do you think of the change in the Australian anthem from ‘For we are young and free’ to ‘For we are one and free’?

January 29, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Lorraine Parker and Liesel Walters: Lorraine: It’s inclusive and unites us all. Liesel: It’s long overdue as it unites us and brings us all together.

George Pratt: It should be left the way it is. They are trying to change too many things, and there are far more important things in the world to focus on.

Marg Applebee: It’s fantastic – anything to promote togetherness and reconciliation. Not that this alone will reconcile us, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Our Bloke – Jim Cassidy

January 22, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? I came to Parkes as a cadet journalist on the Champion Post in 1964. Met my wife Janice and have lived at the same address for 46 years. Our sons Sean and Liam were born here and we have three beautiful grandchildren here.

What is your favourite thing about your working life? As a journalist, covering local, state and federal issues. As a writer winning the Banjo Patterson open poetry competition, and as a horse breeder producing Australian Grand circuit champion pacer Sunshine Band, Group 1 NSW Trotting Oaks winner Riegle Anne, and Central Districts horse of the year, our galloper Solid Mandala.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? New Zealand or Ireland.

What makes you laugh the most? Ronnie Barker and Emrys Cassidy telling stories.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Get back my licence and drive a Kia Stinger GT – within the speed limit of course – and simultaneously save the world from COVID-19 and the Donald!

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? To 1835 Ireland to tell my great, great grandfather Thomas to stay away from horses… they can get you hung or transported.

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? Following the latest cricket result, I would not allow the Indian cricket team in my country!

Do you believe in random acts of kindness and which is your favourite one? I was struggling on steps recently when my two-year-old granddaughter Tully, unasked and uncoached, took my hand and led me to safety.

What is one thing you will never do again? Fall off a bullock at Casino Bushman’s Carnival, or take a perilous ride on the Gravitron at the Parkes Show.

What do you like the most about Christmas?

December 18, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Kay Craft: Being with family. This year I will be with my son and daughter in Sydney.

Mabel Larsen: Looking at Christmas lights around town. It is pretty cool – I enjoy it!

Liz Macraild: I enjoy the food! Our Christmas food is whatever we decide on. It usually includes links to friendships and places and might be a bit of Russian, a bit of German, and old Australian and Anglo traditions.

Our Gal – Margaret Irwin

December 18, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I’ve lived here for 23 years and I really like the easy-going country atmosphere. It is so very much home.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m retired and spend my time caring for my home and family and, at the moment, preparing to celebrate our Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years).

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Writing, gardening and walking with my dogs.

What makes you proud? My family. Seeing them achieve and watching them help to make the world a better place. Watching my family extend into several great-grandchildren

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? A horse. I love the sense of exhilaration and freedom that comes from watching a horse stretch out and run and I would love to experience that.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? The Music Box Dancer is my favourite piece of music because it causes me to want to dance. My favourite book is ‘This was a Man’ by Jeffrey Archer.

Tell us about your best holiday. My husband and I spent a month travelling up the Red Centre via the Indian Pacific and the Ghan to Darwin and the Top End. The spoiling that we received on both trains was unforgettable, the side trips, the scenery, the mishaps and adventures made it totally memorable and a journey we will never forget.
