Does Golf Make Your Back Hurt?

October 11, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Injuries to the lower back are one of the most common golf related problems. The incidence of lower back pain in the male golfer is between 25% to 36% and 22% to 27 % in the female golfer. It has been reported to account for up to 52% of all injuries in recreational golfers and 24% of injuries in professional golfers. The injury mechanism of nearly half of all lower back injuries in golf is due to the swing.

The modern golf swing has been shown to produce large forces on the lower back which change directions rapidly during the swing. Because golf is played in a slightly forward flexed position, along with the asymmetrical, rotational nature of the swing, the forces the joints in the lower back are subject to are quite high. The compression force on the spine during the swing has been shown to be up to eight times body weight.

So.. what can you do to prevent getting back pain when you play?

Maintenance of good mobility in the hips and thoracic and lumbar spine is important. This may require a regular exercise programme at home along with a good warm up before you play whilst using proper technique when lifting your bag and bending through the knees when retrieving the ball.

If you already have lower back pain consider slowing your back swing down. Make sure your weight properly shifts to your back foot and your hips rotate during the back swing. Also, avoid placing your feet too far apart during the address phase as this limits hip rotation later in the swing and increases stresses on the lower back.

For the fitness of you.

Eat Your Eyes Healthy

Eye sight is vital to all of us, and you can boost it by eating the following foods:
• Almonds are a rich source of vitamin E, zinc, fibre, iron, magnesium and potassium.
• Citrus and berries are the ultimate sources of vitamin C, and considered the healthiest food for your eyes.
• Eggs are packed full of protein, and also provide us with lutein, vitamin E and omega 3.
• Leafy Greens contain high amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin – these antioxidants have shown to lower risk of development of macular degeneration and cataracts.
• Fatty Fish are rich in DHA, which is an acid found in the retina. These essential fatty acids help drain fluid from the eye thus decreasing the risk of high pressure.

Meniscus Tears -Part 1

August 16, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Within the normal knee joint are two C shaped  discs of cartilage called the medial and lateral menisci. They have a unique wedged, kidney shape and a blood supply only to their outer third which decreases as you age. Almost 70% of each meniscus is made up of water. These unique properties allow the knee to function as well as it does but they are also the reason why meniscus tears are one of the most common knee joint injuries.

The wedge shape of your meniscus assists with the rotational stability that is created by the anterior cruciate ligament especially during pivoting movements. The large water content allows them to act like a shock absorber. As you walk, jump or run the knee absorbs large forces with the amount of force increasing exponentially as the speed of movement increases. Your mniscus helps to disperse these compressive orces over the whole knee therefore inimizing the damage to the cartilage that ines the bone surfaces.

Meniscal tears are often classified as either raumatic or degenerative. In the younger opulation, meniscus tears are usually due o trauma by twisting on a slightly bent knee.

The traumatic type of meniscal injuries is ost often sports related. Commonly there s pain and a ‘pop’ is heard. The knee joint swells and occasionally the athlete will report a locking or painful clicking sensation. Degenerative tears occur in the older population due to natural age-related degeneration and often the person is unaware of the cause of pain and swelling.

Stay tuned for my next column which will address the management and rehabilitation for the torn meniscus.

Make Oral Health A Priority

August 9, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Dental Health Week is the Australian Dental Association’s major annual oral health promotion event. Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health. The key messages are:

• Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

• Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush.

• Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake.

• Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.

These messages will be reinforced with a cheeky tagline, Watch Your Mouth. Sadly not everyone is doing it at the moment as the reality is that many Australians are not heeding these messages: 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years, 50% are only brushing their teeth once a day, nearly 40% never floss or clean between their teeth, and 73% of young people (14-18 years) are consuming too much sugar. Start conversations about ‘watching your mouth’ to make oral health a high priority.

Stop Type 2 Diabetes Before It’s Too Late!

August 9, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Stop your blood sugar from becoming type 2 diabetes before it is too late!

Did you know diabetes:

• Is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults.

• Is the leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis.

• Increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times.

• Is a major cause of limb amputations.

• Affects mental health as well as physical health.

• Depression, anxiety and distress occur in more than 30% of all people with diabetes.

This is where your friendly staff at Parkes Pharmacy can help. They are available at any time to discuss Type 2 diabetes prevention and management.

There are no early symptoms of high blood sugar. Many Australians have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and don’t realise this is damaging their bodies. What’s more, 60% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented! The good news is, our pharmacists can conduct a simple check for you to learn your risk and help prevent type 2 diabetes before it’s too late.

One of the best ways to prevent diabetes is to cut back on your sugar intake. For the average person, you should limit your intake to six teaspoons a day. Sugar can be hidden in so-called ‘healthy food’, so learn how to read food labels – every 4g of sugar is equivalent to one teaspoon.

Diabetes Australia estimates that 2 million Australians are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and another 500,000 have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. Undiagnosed (and poorly controlled) diabetes can lead to the health complications listed above, so it’s extremely important to get yourself assessed. Come and see us today!

Codeine Rescheduling

July 13, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

After significant consideration & consultation on the effects of medicines containing codeine on people’s health & wellbeing, the TGA (Therapeutics Good Administra- tion) has decided that products containing codeine will not be able to be sold over the counter in pharmacies, making these prod- ucts available on prescription only.

This change does not come into place until 1st February, 2018. The decision to reschedule codeine to prescription only will mean that people who wish to use painkiller medicines containing codeine will need to obtain a script from their GP or healthcare provider, or use alternative medicines still available over the counter e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen or a combination of these drugs.

If this rescheduling affects you, please speak with one of our friendly pharmacists for a suitable alternative.

Flu Vaccines Myth Buster

April 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Q: Is the available pharmacy vaccine equivalent to the vaccine at the doctors?
A: Yes. The flu vaccine we administer is the current quadrivalent (4-strains) vac- cine that you would receive at your local GP. There are different brands but they will all deliver the same protection. If your doc- tor gives you a script to take back to him/ her, we supply you with the same vaccine as we would to our customers receiving the vaccine in store.

Q: Do I need a script to receive a flu vac- cine?
A: No. You’re welcome to enter the phar- macy and receive your flu vaccine without seeing your doctor for a script.

Q: Does everyone get a free flu vaccine from the doctor?
A: No. The following groups are eligible for a free seasonal flu vaccination:
All pregnant women
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months to five years
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over
People aged six months and over with medical conditions predisposing them to severe influenza
All people aged 65 years and over

Q: If I am eligible for a free flu vaccine, can I get it from the pharmacy?
A: No. If you meet the criteria for a free vac- cine, it must be administered by your GP.

Q: Do I need to make an appointment to have my flu vaccine at the pharmacy? A: No. Our accredited pharmacists are more than happy to administer your flu vaccine at your earliest convenience. At certain times, there may be a short waiting period if the store is busy.

Take The Shot!

March 9, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Pharmacy will once again be administering the flu vaccination via our trusted and accredited pharmacists this year. These will be conducted in a safe and professional environment in our EasyClinic consultation room. And get this – you don’t need a script!

Why should you get a flu shot?

The flu causes about 3,500 deaths and 18,000 hospitalisations yearly in Australia. It is responsible for around 10 per cent of workplace sick days taken. The more people who get the flu shot, the less it can be spread through our community. The single most effective way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated between March and May.

Who’s eligible?

Anyone above the age 18 years. If you are over the age of 65years,or pregnant, you are eligible to receive a free flu vaccination but you must see your GP to get it.

So how does it work?

All you have to do is call to make an appointment or come into store at a time most convenient to you. There is a consent form to fill out and a short waiting time, and once you’ve been jabbed, it is recommended that you stay in store and browse for 10 minutes in case of an allergic reaction. While you wait and browse around, you’ll receive a Double Dollars LifeClub voucher to use in store.

So don’t delay!

The waiting list has begun. The vaccinations will arrive at Parkes Pharmacy within the next month and keep an eye out for our special clinic days. Updates will be loaded via our Facebook page. See you soon for your flu shot!
