The Rules of Engagement…

February 22, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Decorating and styling to the untrained eye may seem a skill that is weaved with mystery and wonder. For those of us in the know the reason we succeed in styling endeavours is because we know and implement key styling rules, or the do’s and don’ts.

Decorating Do’s:
• Have an overall plan and vision of what you would like to achieve.
• Adopt a colour palette that is neutral and can be adapted to different styles over time. Add colour with soft furnishings and accessories.
• Select furniture that is in scale with the room’s dimensions to ensure the final result will be in perfect proportion.
• Define zones in open plan areas with rugs and always use cushions to seamlessly bring a room’s colour palette together. Also combine different textures and fabrics to create interest, and more warmth and atmosphere.
• Style your room with statement pieces that reflect your personality. Large artwork and stunning vases filled with natural elements give texture and a WOW factor to your home. And what not to do when we decorate…
• Don’t be overwhelmed. If you don’t want to tackle a project alone make sure to get help. I enjoy helping clients achieve a result they will love to live in.
• Don’t try to incorporate too many different ideas or styles into one design.
• Don’t settle for second best. Choose pieces of furniture that you love and will stand the test of time.

I hope you feel empowered and filled with knowledge to inspire you into action to turn your home into an amazing work of art or at least a home that you are content to claim as your own.

Stop Procrastinating

January 24, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

All too much in life we seem to be waiting for something to happen before we can really enjoy our life. We constantly wait to lose that last three kilos or to fit in that special dress. We need to start living in the moment and enjoy what we have now.

Life is here to enjoy it now. If we can start celebrating what we have each and every day we can live our best lives right now. There will always be projects to make our homes better, but let’s start to turn our houses into homes that we can’t wait to return to every day.

It’s easy if you follow these simple ideas:
• Take pride and care in your home and your possessions. Surround yourself with items that you really love and that
will look fantastic.
• Adopt a clutter-free approach to living your life by removing excess items and junk.
• Give your home the WOW factor by adding statement pieces in different rooms.
• Give yourself permission to stay home and relax every now and then. Just enjoy the simple pleasures in life and allow yourself quiet time in your favourite chair to read or just to sit and reflect for a while.
• Start pursuing activities that you love to do in your home and make time for these pursuits. If you love entertaining go for it, and create a space that allows you to enjoy spoiling your family and friends.
• Stop procrastinating and start doing! If you are not sure of how to bring your decorating dreams to life, get help!

My home is really important to my happiness, and by this I mean that regardless of its size or style, I have a home that I love to come home to. It’s my sanctuary from the outside world. When you create this inner feeling of peace and belonging in your home, your life and what you can achieve in the outside world grows exponentially…

My Idea Of Bootcamp….

December 21, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Once the haze of all that Christmas and New Year wining and dining has cleared I thought that a project or two requiring a little bit of energy might just be useful in burning off those extra slices of glazed ham that we all enjoyed. These four easy ideas will make the start of 2018 be filled with promise and excitement ready for a fantastic year ahead.

1. Declutter
I feel nothing else makes a more dramatic impact to the overall presentation and atmosphere of a home than a
dedicated effort and successful attack on de-cluttering all the surfaces in one’s home. Always remember that one amazing piece that is large will give you a real WOW factor and make your home feel much more styled and contemporary.

2. Rearrange
Take the time to really focus on the layout of your home and where key furniture items are positioned. Are they stopping a natural flow to the way you as a family move around the room? Could the removal of excess furniture make the space work better? Consider rearranging the furniture within your open living areas to make different zones with the space and give more definition to these separate areas.

3. Finish those odd jobs
A dedicated effort to complete previous jobs that were started but perhaps not bought to fruition at the first attempt will clean up your home dramatically. Having a home that is neat and tidy and maintained regularly will be a breeze bought to fruition at the first attempt will clean up your home dramatically. But if a job is undertaken and
completed before the next DIY project is dreamed up and designed you will always feel on top of all the challenges
you take on.

4. Make some artwork
A sensational artwork designed by you and your family can give your home a real individual flair and really showcase
the personalities of the people who are lucky enough to live within your home. Think big and commission large canvases that may be either very simple and feature a block colour or go wild with patterns and abstract shapes to release the artist within.

Christmas Is Nearly Here

November 23, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

It feels like we have only just put our winter woollies away when suddenly we need to start Christmas shopping and decorating our homes. It is such a special time, and probably the key time of the year for visitors and family. We need to make sure our homes look sensational, styled with Christmas love and cheer. With these simple techniques your
yuletide fluffing will be a guaranteed success.

• Before the tinsel comes out do a quick spring clean, and remove some of your usual decorating items to avoid clutter. Consider moving furniture around to allow for a greater flow of bodies to minimise congestion with a house full of people.
• Pick a colour theme to make the look dynamic and stylish. I love silver, white and black for effortless chic; and silver, grey and lavender for a more feminine feel or even dynamic red and green with touches of nature for a timeless classic.
• Think nature to give you a rustic but elegant look. Big natural branches look amazing strung with lights or simple glass baubles. I love branches as centrepieces on the Christmas dining table to create a relaxed and casual feel. Use costume jewellery strewn throughout candles to add a really elegant feel to the table.
• Candles, especially led candles, will give your home a warm glow without mess or fuss or danger. I have a huge array of candles on my main dining table that create a beautiful sight when you come home after a late night.
• The same principle applies to Christmas decorating as it does to everyday life: less is definitely more. Large statement pieces will give the home a WOW factor especially in key focal areas.
• Remember first impressions count, so an amazing hanging on your front door or a great Christmas inspired arrangement in your entryway will instantly create a mood.
• Handmade presents add a personal touch and can be a great way to entertain children prior to the big day. It can
also lighten the financial drain, but don’t place yourself under extra pressure if this activity is not a joy for you.

How To Get Rid Of The Junk In Your Trunk

October 26, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

We accumulate possessions and items over time regardless of their level of importance or actual significance. This innate desire to keep these possessions causes clutter. If we get rid of possessions and objects we can make our homes instantly bigger. So what is clutter?
There are two main types:
1. Day to day clutter is items that we may use regularly but don’t necessarily have a place, so they tend to lay around on surfaces creating a mess.
2. Long-term clutter include items like outgrown or unworn clothing, obsolete papers, broken or old toys and disliked, but well-meaning gifts that take up valuable storage space like filling up a garage leaving no space for the family car.
If you accept that you have too many objects, follow these guidelines to live clutterfree:
• Don’t be overwhelmed by the clutter. Take a big breath, relax and deal with it room by room.
• Focus on one key area until that is done. The end result will trigger the feel good endorphins to keep you going.
• Be strong and divide your clutter into three groups:
a) Items to be thrown out. If you haven’t used it recently chances are you won’t need it in the future either, so it needs to go.
b) Items that can be given to charity or hold a garage sale to make some money out of your unwanted possessions.
c) Items to be returned into a freshly cleaned and organised area.
• Do you have enough shelving or space to keep your possessions neat and tidy? If not, you might need to buy extra shelving to make sure all your hard work is not for nothing.
• Give yourself adequate time to make sure you can finish them over a day or a weekend.

Once you get started you will be so proud of your achievements and how you can live within your new clutter-free home that all the effort that you have put in will be worth it.

Big Really Is Beautiful

September 21, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

I am very lucky to live in a home endowed with generous measurements. An inaccurate drawing of our dream home was one of the best mistakes ever made as a large home has so many benefits. When you have a spacious home you can easily fall into the trap of spreading yourself out – by collecting a myriad of items because you have the space. But a true aficionado of the large home will keep the feeling of spaciousness intact and a thing of beauty.

Our large empty shell of a home needed extra care when it came to decorating to make sure it looked amazing and not cavernous. If money is available or calculated into the budget from the start, you have to be very clever how you are going to spend your hard-earned dollars to make sure your purchases will work the best.

Firstly, it is really important to select items that are in scale to the room’s proportions. Custom made furniture does not necessarily mean expensive. You need to find an Australian manufacturer that will do made to measure alterations. Remember to consider incorporating modular lounges into your design rather than continually adding extra single chairs as this can add clutter rather than style.

Secondly, the best way to fully take advantage of a large open plan space is to divide it into different zones and purposes. This will give atmosphere and individuality to each area. It will also give you cosiness and intimacy that may otherwise be hard to achieve.

Thirdly when selecting artworks, rugs, urns or other fluffing pieces these need to be oversized to look sensational and really give your home the WOW factor. A classic mistake is selecting smaller pieces and placing them on larger walls. Your mantra needs to be big is best. Place large arrangements or urns in corners or on surfaces where they can work their magic but do not need to be moved on a daily basis.

Be comfortable in your home and embrace the beauty of big open spaces by having the confidence to place one large
amazing object in key locations and resist the urge to add more and more elements into the look. And remember, large objects and more streamlined surfaces, is a housekeeping dream when it comes to cleaning.

Select a colour palette that will enhance your home’s dimensions. Larger spaces can take more colour and still look spacious, but I like to have an overall colour scheme to give cohesion to the overall design.

A big, generously proportioned home can be a thing of true beauty and an absolute pleasure to live in.

Webinar A Resounding Success

I held my very first online webinar on Wednesday night focusing on sharing my design tips and tricks for home decorating. The event was actually sold out with over 35 women watching and interacting. I had a live audience in-store as well, which created a very happy and positive vibe to start with and then combined with the women online it proved to be a fabulous night.

Online attendees were from all over the country from as far afield as Queensland and Melbourne, Port Macquarie, Sydney and even Bourke! So many women gathered together and had a glass of wine while sitting around and watching the screen and it made for a very relaxed and fun night out.

The webinar focused on just how easy it can be to create an amazing difference to how your home feels and from the feedback I have received there will be more events in the future.

The main point that was mentioned at the conclusion of the night was a disbelief at how easy it can be to change the way you feel about your home. The other main fact was how easy it was to join and participate in the actual webinar process. A fact which may have caused some ladies nervous tension prior to the event.

I was very touched to think so many people took time out of their busy lives to be a part of the night!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend
Love Karen x

French Doors Are An Interesting Option

July 27, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

French doors create a sense of luxury in any home. Their lavish styling is complimented by their practicality, with a variety of options available to open up your living area and allow wide access to a courtyard.

At the Glassplace hinged French doors are available as double or single doors, and come in either aluminium or Western Red Cedar with a full range of matching windows available in either material.

If interior wall space is limited, French doors are a great option. Available as both an open in or open out application, French doors have the ability to be a stunning 2400mm high. French doors can be fitted with toughened or laminated glass or with Low E glass for energy savings and more comfortable living.

Full locking options are available for security, safety and peace of mind. You can view various French doors and single hinged door options on display at the Glassplace show room. You can also see for yourself how Low E Glass can make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.

Being Bold In The Bedroom

July 27, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Bedrooms are no longer just a place to lay your head after a long day of toiling. Our bedroom can be of great importance to our wellbeing. It can be a private sanctuary to retreat and withdraw to when needed. A beautiful bedroom allows us to relax and unwind, taking pleasure in the fact that we are safe and secure in a tranquil space we have created.

By surrounding yourself with items you love and cherish, your bedroom can become a reflection of your personality. Because it is a private space you can really express your style in a dramatic way. A bedroom is not on show to the world so decorating choices can be bolder. Get daring and express yourself with colour, prints and patterns.

When choosing your bedding and curtains, don’t be afraid to mix patterns, prints and different textures. Purchasing a quality mattress and bed will ensure a sensational night’s sleep. But for an instant update just change the bedding.

A new quilt cover can work miracles in changing the overall look. Throws and cushions add texture, warmth and bring the theme together. In my opinion the more cushions you pile on the bed the better the effect. This is a design rule that I follow to the letter.

Remember to decorate with pieces you love and that hold special significance, and incorporate photos of loved ones to create the story of your life. I love groups of photos arranged in block formations with the same frames to give
our everyday photos a designer look. A well-placed rug will give your private space a really luxurious feel. Imagine placing your feet on a soft shag rug each morning when you step out of bed.

Making sure you have enough storage is also critical. There will be no solace in the space if it is cluttered. If space allows, use artificial flowers or textural sticks in urns or pots, or add an indoor plant for a natural wow factor. Lamps and soft lighting will create an intimate feel, add an armchair and your room is ready to go.

Window Myths Busted

June 22, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

There are several myths when it comes to windows. Glassplace can help you sort the fact from the fiction.

Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows.
Fact: Replacement of existing windows and doors does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed.

Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency.
Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70% of energy is lost through windows and doors, and 90% of this heat loss occurs through glass.

Myth: Double glazed windows work best.
Fact: Double glazed windows work well in hot and cold climates, however low-E glass works just as well. Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glassTM, or Comfort PlusTM, it works in three ways: it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun; it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside and outside of the window; and the tinted version cuts down glare.

Myth: Anyone can install windows.
Fact: Not everyone can install windows correctly. Poor installation can result in leaking, drafts and difficulty opening and closing.
