Golfers Win First Championship

October 20, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

foursomes-championships-002

Peter Dixon and John Green recorded a double win on Sunday when they took out their fifth Men’s Foursomes Championship as well as the Dixon Physiotherapy Handicap section. The triumphant pair first won the championship in 2007 and have had further success on another three occasions. They will travel to Campbelltown to tackle the NSW Men’s Foursomes Championships in November.

Runners-up were Cameron Butler and Lachlan Buesnell who finished on 161, some 8 shots behind the victors.
In the consolation division Tony Hendry and Peter Bristol spreadeagled the field to take their first championship title by 10 shots from Michael Smith and Wayne Parker. Like the winners they also had success in the handicap section.

The Ladies Foursomes Championships also on Sunday saw sisters Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones blitz the field in convincing fashion with Cherrie Phillips and Glynis Conroy in the runner-up position. Consolation winners Colleen Staples and Dawn Wakefield proved too consistent in taking out their inaugural championship event with Lesley Fisher and Denise Charlton filling the runner-up position.

Both Guise and Jones, and Staples and Wakefield also snared the events handicap divisions which were sponsored by Network Video and Parkes Betta Home Living.

Last Championship Event

October 13, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The final major golf championship event of the year for both the men and ladies will be contested this Sunday. The men play the final round of the Dixon Physiotherapy sponsored 36 hole titles in both the championship and consolation sections, while the ladies play their 27 hole event in the same sections with titles sponsored by Betta Home Living and Network Video.

The men already played the first round last weekend. Peter Dixon and John Green are halfway leaders after a superb opening round of 4 over par 75. They enjoy a 3 shot lead over Phil Barnard and Denis Howard, while Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler are a further shot away. In the Consolation Section, Tony Hendry and Peter Bristol lead Michael Smith and Wayne Parker by 6 shots and appear likely to win their first title.

In the Ladies 27 hole Foursomes both divisions will have the defending champions attempting to retain their mantle.
In the Championship section, defending titleholders sisters Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones will be hard to toss with the major challengers being reigning Club Champion Cherrie Phillips and Glynis Conroy. In the Network Video Consolation section a period of inactivity by the reigning titleholders Judy McCabe and Leone Stevenson
could haunt them despite the fact that they received a favourable draw. Consistency will pave the way for Colleen Staples and Dawn Wakefield to take the title.

Lachlan Dragons Trained By Famous Canadian Coach

October 13, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Three Lachlan Dragon paddlers joined 36 other dragonboat enthusiasts from NSW at Burrendong Dam over the long weekend to be coached by renowned Canadian coach Kamini Jain. Warren and Donna Edwards and Claire Davis had a fantastic weekend with members from Dubbo, Forbes, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Sydney, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong. “We were a little concerned about the weather forecast,” Donna admitted, “but were on the water by nine o’clock on Saturday morning, the waters were calm and Lake Burrendong at 126% capacity looked magnificent.”

“The afternoon paddle was smooth and surreal,” said Warren. “It was the most peaceful and relaxing feeling, with us being the only ones on the Lake, apart from the birdlife and an occasional fish breaking the calm surface.” Under Kamini’s excellent coaching the paddlers could feel their techniques improving, and each paddler’s performance
was filmed for individual evaluation and discussion.

Although this mixed bunch of paddlers had at first seemed a bit of a motley crew, by Sunday they had come to resemble something close to two professional crews paddling in harmony and rhythm across the still waters of Burrendong. “I can’t speak highly enough of the skills passed onto us by Kamini,” said Warren. “The results, by Sunday, were spectacular and I really feel that Kamini was proud of her efforts and success.”

“It was a great weekend of learning from Kamini,” agreed Claire, “as well as from each other. And it was a real joy to feel part of this group as we watched each other’s skills develop.” If you would like to be part of this great sport, you can find us on Facebook or just come and meet us on Lake Forbes at 8:15am on Sundays or 5:45pm on Thursdays.
Wear some sporting gear with old joggers or water shoes and bring your water bottle, hat, sunscreen and mozzierepellent. We’ll supply you with a paddle, a buddy to sit with in the boat, and some good friendly company.

Dry Weather Good For Golf

October 6, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

We finally had a dry weekend that allowed members of the Parkes Golf Club to shed the cobwebs off their golf clubs and prepare for some competition golf. The men contested an 18 hole 2 Man Team Stableford last Saturday for trophies put up by members Michael Craft and Peter Dixon. Holes 1 to 6 were played as a Best Ball, holes 7 to 12 as Aggregate and the final 6 holes as a Mutliplier. The last 6 holes proved crucial as Michael Dellaca and Scott Mann edged out Matthew Swetland and Rod Kiley on a countback after both pairs returned excellent scores of 61.

In the Individual event it was plain sailing for Shen Taranto who recorded the day’s best nett score of 39 points.
Ball Winners on the day went to 61 Matt Swetland and Rod Kiley, 58 Mitch McGlashan and Cameron Butler, 53 Neil
and Cameron McMillan and on 52 were Marty Woods and Max Haley. Only a small contingent of ladies contested
an 18 Hole Stableford round for the Cherrie Phillips trophy. Junior Kasey Fay-Rice spread-eagled the field with a convincing 7 point victory as she returned a great 35 points.

Ball winners went to Margaret Hogan on 28 points and Kaye Jones with 27. The first round of the Dixon Physiotherapy  36 Hole Members Club Foursomes Championships will be played on Sunday.

Sutton Strikes At Club Golf

September 29, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Members of the Parkes Golf Club contested their first round of club golf last Saturday in nearly a month when they played the re-scheduled Telescope Tyres & Batteries September Monthly Medal. In the A Grade, reigning club champion Justin Sutton fired an even par round of 71 to take the scratch award by four shots, while Steve Edmonds fired a great 68 nett to be 3 shots under his handicap.

Countbacks decided the B and C Grade awards with Paul Thomas taking the B Grade scratch after he and Troy Thomson finished level on 88. Peter Picker won the handicap section with 74 nett. In the C Grade Richard Hamilton took the Scratch award after a solid 95, and in the handicap section Rod Luyt returned to the winners list with 68 nett the equal best of the day. In other awards the Robert Cheney, Dave Stevenson, Troy Thomson and Peter Magill
sponsored Veterans award was taken out by Wayne “Pup” Parker with 70 nett and in the Griffins Leading Edge Putting competition, it was once again Paul Thomas who excelled as he returned just 24 putts for the 18 holes.

Nearest the Pin victors on the day saw Peter Dixon winning three awards including the Money Hole, the Griffins Leading Edge 4th hole and the Westlime 15th hole. Robert Cheney commenced proceedings when his iron shot to the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st hole, while playing partner Troy Thomson claimed the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th. Chris Goodie hit a magnificent 3 iron to just 120cm on the Harvey Norman sponsored 11th hole. Justin Sutton fired a
wedge for his second shot to the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete sponsored Par 4, 9th hole, while on the PJL Group sponsored 18th hole Phil Bishop claimed the two golf balls.

Ball Winners on the day went to 70 Peter Collins, 71 Justin Sutton and Peter Dixon. 72 Phil Bishop and Peter Magill, 73 Robert Hey and on 74 were John Green, Paul Thomas, Tony Evans and Jake Hodge. Only a small contingent of ladies contested an 18 Hole Stroke round which also saw the play for the Parkes Golf Shop sponsored Club Medal. Anita Medcalf claimed the award with a 79 nett, Margaret Hogan was the sole ball winner on 80 nett on a countback from the unlucky Kasey Fay-Rice.

Medcalf also won the qualifying round of the Ethel Kenyon Trophy on 30 Stableford points.

Locals Benefit From Sports Grants

September 15, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Six local schools and sporting groups will benefit from more than $12,000 in funding from the second round of the 2016 Northparkes Sports Grants. CMOC – Northparkes Mine has partnered with the Parkes Sports Council to financially assist local groups to improve facilities and programs.

Trundle Central School will receive the majority of funds in this round, with $6,500 allocated to build a new netball and tennis court. Other recipients include: Parkes Pony Club $770 for a guest instructor, Parkes Hockey Masters Women $1,257 for representative uniforms, Parkes Little Athletics $1,574 for scissor jump mats, Parkes Railway
Bowling Club $1,050 for new scoreboards and Parkes PCYC $1,400 for new matting and airfloor.

Northparkes’ Community and External Relations Officer Elysha Loiterton said this was the fourth year of the successful partnership program. “We recognize how vital sport is to our local community – supporting the grants
program is one way we can contribute to some of the teams and clubs which do such a great job in keeping Parkes healthy and happy,” Elysha said. Sports Grants Committee Chairman Alan Gersbach said that this round saw a good
selection of projects submitted, and most received some funding from Northparkes.

A total of $15,000 will be available in the next round of funding, with applications opening in January next year.

Grand Win For Spacecats!

September 15, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

fullsizerender-2

The Parkes Spacecats scored a narrow one-point victory in extra time in the Group XI league tag grand final in Dubbo on Sunday. Playing on Dubbo CYMS’ homeground, it was a golden goal to Claire Barber that sealed the 13-12 win in the competition’s second year.

Two tries by Sally Dwyer and Ella-J Harris and two conversions by Claire Barber saw Parkes lead 12-10 at half time.
Parkes held tight through a second half stalemate, with CYMS kicking a penalty for the only two points of the half, levelling the score at 12-12 at full time.

The desperation of two periods of extra time saw the game become very physical, but the Spacecats held tight to their structure and made a lot of forward metres. Claire Barber found herself in front of the posts and surefooted the ball over for the one point field goal to win the match for Parkes. While admitting to being “terrified” in the lead up to the game, coach Michael Dumesny said that a quality final training session made him confident the girls would put
on a good display.

“They showed up in the right frame of mind on Sunday, so I knew they had it in them,” Michael said. “The difference was that we stood up to the task of the extra time pressure – we were on top of it.” Michael said Sally Dwyer was strong throughout the game, but on Sunday it was difficult to single out the best player from an outstanding team performance.

“Now that we’ve got the win, we’ll be able to really celebrate at presentation on Saturday!”

Parkes Golf Open

September 15, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes will welcome representatives from all across the state as they converge on the town this weekend to compete in the annual SCT Parkes Open Golf Tournament. The tournament will host 156 players from 40 clubs, with over a third of players off handicaps of eight or less – making it the strongest field in the event’s 42 year history.

Parkes Golf Club Captain and Tournament Director, Paul Thomas said the strength and ability of the players has forced officials to change the A Grade field from its normal 10 handicap to the lower limit of eight. “The calibre of players attending this year’s event is outstanding. We are really looking forward to seeing some of the State’s and Western area’s premier golfers in action.

“While country players have dominated the event over its 42 years, there will be some tough competition from the metropolitan clubs,” Paul said. Mudgee golfer Mark Hale will start as the favourite, slightly ahead of Duntryleague’s
Robert Payne and another Mudgee aspirant, Andrew Best.

Since 1981, the SCT Logistics Parkes Open entrants have competed for the Fred Funnell Memorial trophy, whilst the Keith Clarke Memorial trophy is presented to the leading scratch player in the veterans division. This year the Club will once again honour the late John “Gidgie” Leister with players from all grades competing for the John Leister Memorial Trophy for the best handicap score over the initial 18 holes.
