Parkes Karate Members Pass Grading With Flying Colours

June 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

ADULT RED BELTS

Central West Kyokushin Karate Club painted the Parkes Dojo Red earlier this month when they held their first ever grading for the club. 26 students (21 juniors and 5 seniors) completed the grading on Thursday 2nd June. Tested in the presence of family and friends everyone was trying their best with all students performing outstandingly to successfully pass their grading.

Most students who begin karate are nervous to start; am I fit enough? Will I get hurt? Will I embarrass myself? However, these students pushed past their doubts to discover that Karate is not only an opportunity to get fit and learn to defend yourself but it is also an opportunity to develop a wide range of life skills in a fun and safe environment that will be useful throughout their entire life.

The students that participated in the grading have worked hard and put in many hours of practice to qualify to be tested for their belt and Sensei Michelle Kable was proud to see all students pushing themselves during their test; “A great effort and attitude was demonstrated by all students throughout their grading, it’s fantastic to see how much they have achieved so far this year, and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on their commitment to Karate and their determination to do their very best throughout this semester, everyone did exceptionally well” she said.

Kyokushin Karate is a fun and challenging martial art that gives children a jumpstart in life by providing them with practical and usable life skills from a very early age. Some of the benefits for anyone participating in karate include self-discipline; martial arts help instil mental focus– by learning how to develop concentration and complete tasks, the discipline taught in the dojo in regards to uniforms, customs, and techniques often transfers into other areas of life including school, work and home.

Karate is also all about respect; punching, kicking and sparring are all secondary to the respect that is established from the moment a student walks into a dojo. Children learn to treat themselves, their parents, family, instructors and teachers and their fellow students with respect – to treat each other as they would like to be treated themselves.

The red belt is of special significance as these students are beginning to work through the ranking system of karate, it signifies their confidence, courage and commitment that they have shown in trying something new and sticking to it; working through a belt ranking system gives the student measurable goals to follow that are realistic to attain and increases their own self-belief and confidence. The sense of self-confidence and accomplishment the student feels when mastering a new technique or graduating to a new belt will follow them wherever they go.

Netball News…

June 16, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Netballers are hoping for sunny skies tomorrow so all the junior netballer’s will be able to get on the courts and play.
Parkes Netball Association will be working with the other local sporting groups in Parkes to promote Shoosh for kid’s week. Parkes Netball have wonderful support for their junior netball competition, and most people do the right thing, but they would just like to remind spectators that there is no place for negative comments. The organisers
are lucky to have a some of the junior players coming along each week to umpire games who are still learning, and it’s important that they are encouraged.

• If your comment is negative, then SHOOSH!
• If your comment is directed at a player, then SHOOSH!
• If your comment is directed at a referee or match official, then SHOOSH!
• Reward good play by both teams with applause, if you can’t then SHOOSH!
• Show respect to players and game officials.

Remember it’s their game!

For all of umpires on Saturday Calli will be down at the courts from 10am to coach the umpires, so if anyone has any umpiring questions (including wanting to be allocated or learn more) just see Calli so she can try to facilitate everyone’s learning.

Space News…

June 16, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The June long weekend marked round 7 of the local derby for the Parkes Spacemen and Forbes Magpies at Pioneer Park. The club wore white footy socks to support the cause against domestic violence. The under 18’s began the day with a gallant effort all the way to the bell. The Spacecats took to Jock Colley field at 12.30pm with all intentions of playing to bring home the win. Claire Barber began proceedings with a deep kick and with errors high in the first few minutes Captain Hannah Kelly in Parkes GP jersey made a great run only to be tagged by a flying Magpie 10 metres out.

Quick play caught the Forbes team off guard and BMJC’s Ella-J Harris opened the tally for the Spacecats after a giant step and dodge. Claire Barber added the 2. Playing as a team and backing up the runs Sally Dwyer sponsored by La Bella added another 4 with Claire adding another 2. Parkes’ third try was awarded to Dippin Dots Demi-Joyce Winter. Forbes put their first points on the board with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

With the continuing of the game the pressure was on the Spacecats, who defended their line and penalty after penalty against them. However, they handled it well, with Hannah Kelly running the length of the field to be tagged by a whisker out and Claire Barber over beside the posts. A fumble on the restart gave Forbes the possession within 20 metres and the Parkes ladies needed to work hard. Nicko’s Bricklaying’s Sarah McAneney got the ball and with some precise passes Parkes Railway Bowling Club’s Emma Bayley got over the line with Claire Barber adding the two. Half time score; Parkes 26- Forbes 4.

The Magpie ladies kicked to start the second half but Sally Dwyer scores Parkes’ sixth try quickly followed by another try by Captain Hannah Kelly with Claire Barber successfully converting. Parkes Services Club’s Nat Gardiner got her first try after a sixty metre sprint and her second soonfollowed. Final score 44 Parkes- 4 Forbes, congratulations!

The remaining team members also deserve a mention as they played just as well Brittany Dumesny, Katie Caldwell, Samara Afele, Brittney Ryan, Shannealle Wyrzynski, Sam Cox, Louise McAneney, Shayna Male and Emeline Lavaka. Special thanks also to the league safes Tim Barber and Tom McEwen, FAO Col Dwyer and Coach Mick Dumesny.

SPACECATS FACE ROUND SIX

After a CYMS start both sides were feeling the pressure and greasy ball mistakes were made in what was shaping up to be a fast paced game. First points went to CYMS with the score at half time Parkes 0- CYMS 10. The Spacecat ladies started the second half knowing they had to work hard to put points on the board and shut down the CYMS attack. Captain Hannah Kelly scored Parkes’ first try with under seven minutes remaining and Claire Barber kicked a successful goal. However it wasn’t enough on the day and the final score stood at CYMS 20- Parkes 6.

The team are now waiting for round 13 where they will face the CYMS ladies at home and hopefully come away with a win. The Parkes Spacemen executive along with the league tag team would like to thank their major Guernsey sponsor Parkes Services Club and Sleeve sponsors 1. The Spacecats were led onto Jock Colley Oval by Trevor Harper for round 4, which sees the first ever group XI grand finalists for ladies league tag go head to head. Parkes was sitting in first place on the leader board, Westside in third.

Parkes started the game and with great pressure got possession of the ball with Louise McAneney over for Parkes’ first. Westside kicked to resume play but Parkes brought it back to halfway with strong runs from Emma Bayley who got over for number 2, extras added from Claire Barber. After a set of six each the Spacecats third was awarded to Sami Afele while Westside were still scoreless. After the Rabbits set of six Emma Bayley dodged players, Codie Wakefield ran hard and Captain Hannah Kelly scored number 4.

The ladies fifth try had Demi-Joyce Winters name to it as did the sixth. Demi got the ball back from the dummy half and was over! An awesome intercept by Hannah Kelly saw her second, Parkes’ seventh, on the board. Westside were still scoreless and the Spacecats made sure it stayed that way working hard in defence.

Parkes’ eighth try and Hannah Kelly’s third went over after quick moves with ten and a half minutes left until full time. Nat Gardiner made some great ground and Ella-J Harris chased the ball into goal and tagged a Westside player. With only minutes left on the clock Parkes were still hungry for another. Fantastic final score of Spacecats 42- Westside Rabbits 0.

Parkes are at home this weekend against Narromine and it’d be great to see local support for our girls who have only had 10 points scored against them so far this season!

The individual event played in conjunction with Saturdays saw victory go to Lindsay Elliott who recorded a great plus 5 score. This Saturday both the men and the ladies will attempt to gain a birth in the final of the Handiskins when they contest the annual Parkes Cellars sponsored 18 Hole 4Ball Aggregate Stableford competition.

The Spacecat ladies started the day against Macquarie strong, with Emma Bailey quickly scoring beside the posts followed by a kick from Claire Barber. The next set saw strong runs from Demi Winter, Codie Wakefield, Emma Bailey, Sam Cox and on the last Katie Caldwell kicked and chased to tag Macquarie in goal. Pressure from Parkes created an opening for Emma Bailey to get her second with another successful kick from Claire Barber.

Macquarie restarted with a kick to Elisha Naqua and a catch on the full followed by a great run by Sarah McAneney. Quick hands got the ball to Katie Caldwell who scored the Spacecats’ third and Claire Barbers third conversion. Again Macquarie started with a kick straight into Elisha Naqua’s hands, passed to Katie Caldwell who dashed 45m to score her fourth with a fourth kick from Claire. Codie Wakefield worked hard not to allow Macquarie any ground, tagging 5 girls in a row from marker position. Demi Winter scored another try for Parkes which took the half time score to Parkes 28 Macquarie 0.

The second half saw Emma Bailey score a quick try with Claire adding 2. Macquarie get the ball in the next set and are hungry for a try but excellent defence from Parkes deny them. An overzealous kick from Macquarie allows Emma Bailey to run and score her fourth try with an on form Claire adding the 2. Captain Hannah Kelly worked hard all game and scored out wide through a sleeping Macquarie defence. The final try of the game went to Demi Winter taking the final score to an impressive Parkes 56 Macquarie 0.

Under 18’s

Macquarie kicked to begin the game and Josh Amberge worked hard to make it out of goal. With a lot of ground made Jye Dillon kicked and scored in the opening minutes, James Goonrey with a kick right in front. Jay Slavin made a run in the next set but Macquarie began to make ground until a crash tackle from Jacob Smede. Jye Dillon goes over for his second after a few errors from Macquarie and effort from Billy Porter, Bailey Jones and Stephen Purcell.

A bad bounce from Macquarie sees Jacob Smede make a 30 metre run and Josh Amberge goes over for the spacemen’s 3rd, resulting in a 16-0 lead for Parkes.

Great chase and a big hits from Bailey Jones, Wilbur Smith, Jye Dillon, Jay Slavin and James Goonrey. Josh Amberge took off down the sideline and managed to stay in with great footwork while Jia Hoe made a run and got hit hard. A penalty was awarded and Ethan Richards pumped his legs to get Zac Gordon within centimetres of the line.

On the last James Goonrey toed the ball to Macquarie and with an error Parkes got it back and out to Jay Slavin and over he went to give James Goonrey a kick in front, taking the half time score to Parkes 22 Macquarie 0.

Macquarie opened the second half with a try and successful conversion. Toby Clarke saved the day with a great tackle after Macquarie intercepted and Ethan Richards and Zac Gordon both make big runs but with no reward. The junior Spacemen begin to tire and Macquarie gain advantage, scoring their third try. On the kick Parkes find some energy and get within 10 metres but fail to get over the line. Ethan Richards gets a loose ball and uses his legs to gain an extra 10. Macquarie strip the ball to give away a penalty right in front and Parkes opt for a kick to end the game, making the final score Parkes 24 Macquarie 16.

Round 2 brought the Nyngan Tigers to Parkes Pioneer Oval for ladies league tag. 18 girls sang Captain Hannah Kelly happy birthday before getting ready for a repeat of the 2015 semi-final, hoping the outcome would be the same. Nyngan kicked to start and nice passes from Ella J Harris, Hannah Kelly and Britt Ryan saw Demi Winter get close but no try.

The ball found its way across the field to Britt Dumesny who ran through Nyngan’s defence but didn’t manage to score. With no points on the board Katie Caldwell and Ella J Harris came on. Ella J Harris took the ball in goal and got it back to the 20 with great stepping and hard running. With great pressure and runs from Nat Gardiner, Nicole Mapperson, Louise McAneney and Codie Wakefield the ball went over for Parkes’ second. Nyngan managed to put some points on the board six minutes before half time.

Emma Bailey retaliated by tagging 3 tigers in a row from marker. Sarah McAneney had a busting run with an off load from Katie Caldwell to score under the posts and a kick by Ella J Harris added the 2. A short kick by Nyngan went out after a bounce that left Parkes with a lot of defending to do before half time, leading to a score of Parkes 14- Nyngan 6 at the half time whistle.

The second half saw Parkes running left to right in what they hoped would be a half empty of tries for Nyngan. Great chase and pressure from the Parkes girls saw Nyngan knock on and Parkes get the ball 20 out. Emma Bailey scored a try followed by a deep kick from Nyngan straight into the hands of Katie Caldwell who dived under the posts for her second. Claire Barber delivered a successful conversion and another great run, racking up another four points for Parkes. With controlled passes Demi Winter upped the pace and scored her first try, conversion by Ella J Harris. Again, Demi received the ball and was over again for her second. Parkes Spacecats were the victors of the day with an end score of Parkes 40- Nyngan 6.

The Parkes Spacemen executive along with the league tag team would like to thank their major Guernsey sponsor Parkes Services Club and Sleeve sponsors.

McGlashan Off To Good Start

May 5, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Golf Club’s annual Club Championships will resume this Saturday after the course was drenched by 2 inches of rain and with more predicted this weekend officials are hoping the storm will hold off until the end of the golf on Sunday.

Currently McGlashan has a slim four shot lead over his nearest rival Justin Sutton and it’s anticipated that this weekend will be the decider for which contender finishes on top. In the minor grades Paul Morgan has a near insurmountable lead of 9 shots in the B Grade title but the runner up position is still up for grabs with Michael Smith on 143 some two shots clear of Troy Thomson with Tim Lasserre in 3rd place. Other players still in with a chance include Paul Thomas on 173, Peter Picker 175 and Peter Boschman on 176.

A battle for supremacy will rage on in C Grade as some 12 players hope to claim the title which currently sees Steve Cook as the leader on 187. However, Steve is only 1 shot ahead of friend Luke Greenwood with Gary McPhee just five shots from the lead in a division that can see swings of up to 5 shots in one round. Other players in with a chance in C
Grade include Ross Smith, Richard Hamliton and Brien McPhee. The Veterans and Junior title appear to be foregone conclusions with both Robert Hey and Lachlan Buesnell appearing to have mortgages on those respective divisions while the overall handicap section currently sees Paul Morgan some 7 shots clear in another one sided race.
