Back To School Road Safety

January 31, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

The new school year resumed for thousands of students this week and Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils are reminding local drivers and parents about children’s safety around schools.

There are 40km/h school speed zones around all schools in NSW. Most school zones are operational between 8 – 9.30am and 2.30 – 4pm on school days. The school zone in Bushman Street, Parkes is operational from 8am – 4pm. Police will be targeting school zones to ensure drivers obey the 40km/h speed as soon as school returns.

Parents and carers can help students remain safe by regularly reinforcing important road safety behaviours with their children, and following the below tips.
• Always make sure children wear a seatbelt or use a child restraint. Child restraint laws require children up to seven years old to be restrained in an approved child restraint.
• Always drop-off and pick-up children on the school side of the road.
• Make sure children use the footpath-side door, or safety door, when getting in and out of a car.
• Never call children across the road to you.
• Use a pedestrian crossing where possible and avoid being distracted by friends, mobile phones or listening to music through headphones whilst walking.
• Children aged up to 10 years old should always be supervised when near traffic.
• Children aged up to eight years old should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road or walking near traffic.
• Make sure children always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
• If your children catch a bus, always walk them to the bus stop. “Children are vulnerable road users. They are at risk in traffic because of their size, their inability to judge speed and distance, as well as the fact that they may behave unpredictably,” said the Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor.

Koalas Fly High Over Parkes

Blue sky days have become somewhat of a rarity lately, but kite enthusiasts were not disappointed on Australia Day when over 200 people enjoyed a beautiful morning at the fourth Kite Festival at Northparkes Oval. The sky filled with colourful creatures from stingrays, flamingos, bats and butterflies to two adorable giant koala kites flown by Ian Burrell.

Ian is from Canberra and comes to every festival with his amazing array of giant kites. He has some surprises every year, and the koalas being a news-worthy topic currently stole the show this time.

“I would like to thank the organisers and the people of Parkes for putting on the kite festival again this year. It would not be Australia Day without going to Parkes. Hope to see you all again next year,” said Ian.

Organiser of the event Peter Guppy was very happy with the day and said it looked like it was the biggest one yet. “Considering it was a long weekend with many people going away, we feel it was a successful day.” He said all the events on Australia Day were very well attended including the early morning breakfast cooked by Parkes Action Club members for the walkers with more than 100 people turning up.

The Parkes Shire Concert Band played at the Australia Day celebrations in Cooke Park on Sunday. New members are welcome to join the band.

Parkes Shire Concert Band (PSCB): New members are welcome to join including students from Year 3 and community members. Dust off your instrument or hire one. The band plays at the Elvis parade, ANZAC march, ABBA, Australia Day, musicals, church fetes, ceremonial occasions, Christmas Carols, and concerts. Rehearsal times are on Tuesday nights during school term from 7 – 9 pm at the PSCB music room above Parkes Aquatic complex in Dalton Street. Contact Musical Director Duncan Clement on 0405 035 164, or President Rhonda Redenbach on 0459 373 624.

New Standpipe Usage Scheme: Parkes Shire Council is introducing a new standpipe usage scheme to maintain sustainable water supplies for the Shire. From Tuesday, 4th February standpipe water will be without charge for up to 25kL per week to approved farming enterprises. Any additional approved farming enterprises usage will be charged at a reduced rate of $3.50 per kilolitre. All standpipe users must reapply for standpipe access. Existing standpipe cards can be reauthorised by completing a new application form by 4th February. Existing standpipe cards that have not been reauthorised by this date will be deactivated. New users can apply for standpipe access through Council, subject to eligibility, which will incur a $20 card activation fee. For more information about the new Parkes Shire Standpipe Usage Scheme visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Beat The Heat: As the hot and dry summer continues, it’s important to stay hydrated. Using your own bottle and refilling with tap water will help save the environment and save you money. The average Australian drinks 42 bottles of water a year and around 33 of these end up in landfill. The simple solution is to bring your own reusable water bottle and keeping it filled with tap water. There are drinking fountains all over town in our parks and sporting fields. Bottled water costs 2000 times more than tap water. There are much more important things you could be spending your money on.

No Phone Zone: Local lifeguards are reminding parents and carers to put their phones away while at the pool this swim season. Royal Life Saving Australia statistics show that a lack of direct supervision by a parent or carer is a contributing factor in 70% of all drowning deaths at public pools. Active supervision means focusing all of your attention on your children all of the time, when they are in, on or around the water.

Focus on your swimming kids and not on your phone when you are at the pool or any other waterways this summer.

Change Of Focus For Bosmac After 39 Years

January 31, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

James Haddin will take over the reigns at Bosmac with the retirement of his father Robert, who started the business in 1981.

Dear Valued Customers and Suppliers,

The Haddin family is saddened to announce that we will be winding down the manufacturing side of Bosmac Pty Ltd over the next couple of months.

This has been an extremely hard decision our family has had to make. It has been driven by many factors including weather conditions, economic climate, cost of labour and cost of capital equipment needed to compete with other manufacturers.

The announcement of my retirement means a loss of skill and expertise in manufacturing design and implementation, which has played a big part in the products and services Bosmac has been able to provide in the past.

Whilst manufacturing winds down, and we change over to the new setup, we are happy to announce that Bosmac will still be selling many of our well-known quality products manufactured outside our workshop. James and the team will be assembling these and have them available for sale. However, our own in-house manufactured products will no longer be available.

James and the team will also be sourcing new quality products to service our customers’ needs from local and overseas suppliers. Bosmac is now also a local supplier of BOC and ELGAS gas agencies.

These changes will have NO effect on stocks and supplies, and as we learn more about your workshop and business needs, we endeavour to grow our profile of products in stock in these areas in 2020.

James and the team will keep you all up to date if any future changes will impact you. With his knowledge of spare parts and over 20 years in the industry, James will be able to provide the solutions to your needs under the banner of Bosmac AG and Industrial. Don’t hesitate to call James on 6862 3699 for more information.

We are looking forward to what the future brings.

Regards,
Robert Haddin
Managing Director

A Dream Come True For Kurt

January 31, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

GOT IT… Kurt Lovett is the Parkes 2020 Sportsperson of the Year.

Playing for the Kookaburra hockey team is a dream Sportsperson of the Year, Kurt Lovett, has had since year 4.

His mum Fiona discovered a school work sheet from year 4 asking what you want to do when you grow up. Kurt’s written response was to play for the Kookaburra hockey team.

“Dreams do come true,” said his dad John when accepting the award on Sunday as Kurt was in camp in Sydney with the Kookaburras playing Belgium last weekend and Great Britain this weekend.

“I know Kurt is very humble in winning this award, however he has worked extremely hard over the last four years in which he has finally been selected in the Australian Kookaburra hockey team, where he is now based in Perth,” said John.

Kurt had a few individuals he wanted to thank including George Sommers who coached him in his junior years of hockey, Laurie Wakefield who had a lot to do with coaching Kurt in his teenage years and representative hockey, and the Parkes Hockey Association who supported him for the last 18 years.

He made a special mention of Dusty Powter who supported and helped him with sponsorship over the years. Last but not least, he thanked his parents.

Our Gal – Phoebe Potts

January 31, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Parkes my whole life (17 years). I love the enthusiasm and dedication of community members who always get involved in town events.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m a shop assistant at Cunningham’s IGA and a coach for the Parkes Tennis Club. I love interacting and working with others in both my jobs. I absolutely love both working environments. I enjoy the friendships I’ve made and of course the banter.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? In my free time I love to have a hit at tennis, throw around a softball with my sister, or spend quality time with my dog, Cleo.

What makes you proud? Seeing others achieve their goals knowing the endless amount of hard work they have put in to their success makes me proud.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? I would be a bird of some sort so I could fly around exploring the world from a different perspective.

What is your all time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? I don’t necessarily have an all time favourite song, but I love all Ed Sheeran songs.

Tell us about your best holiday. I’ve been on so many trips for different sporting events that I can’t pinpoint my best time away.

What is on your bucket list? To travel and explore around Europe with my sisters.
