Red Cross Crosses Bridge

January 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Norma Oliver, President Red Cross Parkes Branch, exchanges the contract with Greig Ball, President Parkes Bridge Club.

The Parkes Bridge Club has found a new home in the Red Cross Rooms in a win-win situation for both parties.

The bridge club which, over the past six years, has gone from the Father Pat Centre, to the Railway Bowling Club, to the Parkes Leagues Club and temporarily to the foyer of The Little Theatre has found itself a home at last.

In a mutual arrangement, the Parkes Bridge Club has agreed to furnish the Red Cross room with new tables and chairs for their friendly coffee shop and to hire the room at regular times for members to play bridge.

This will bring ongoing benefits to both parties as the Red Cross will receive a permanent income, while the bridge club will gain a permanent home.

It will also allow an exciting new initiative for the bridge club as they will be able to hold beginners’ classes on a regular basis. Bridge, originating in Europe, is one of the world’s most popular card games; a great game for exercising the grey matter while also making new friends.

You can build your skills to play in tournaments around the region or just head along to one of the local weekly casual games on Mondays, Tuesday or Thursdays.

The beginner classes are planned to commence from mid-February, with a warm welcome extended to the Parkes community to head along.

Although it has been said that bridge is hard to learn, it only takes fundamental card knowledge to begin playing and enjoying the game. To master bridge may be more difficult and take more time, but that should not stop you from going along to give it a go. Like others, you will continue the journey of learning for many years to come.

Twelve local kids spent the school holidays learning lifesaving skills as part of the first intake of the Outback Lifesavers program held at Parkes Aquatic Centre.

The program was developed by Parkes Shire trainers, Nikki Thornhill and Christie Pisani, in conjunction with Royal Lifesaving Society Australia (RLSSA) to provide children aged 10 to 16 with lifesaving survival and rescue skills. The aim is to prevent instances of drowning in rural and remote communities.

“The one-hour practical lessons over five consecutive days each had a different focus including water safety awareness, resuscitation, first aid, spinal injury management, rescue techniques, recognising an emergency and team building,” said Parkes Aquatic Centre Coordinator, Nikki Thornhill.

Six of the participants went on to complete their bronze medallion.

Letter to the Editor

January 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Dear Editor

I despair of the continued misunderstanding of the link between current catastrophic bushfires and climate change. Very simply, global warming has occurred since industrialisation. Warming has caused changes to natural climate and weather patterns. Climate change in Australia means longer, hotter, drier summers. Bushfires are started by arsonists, lightning, accidents, power tools and spontaneous combustion. BUT now, they burn hotter, longer and faster because of climate change.

Budget/staff cuts to the NPWS (NSW National Parks) and fire services, and ignorance of Aboriginal land management practices, contribute to an inability to prepare for and fight these mega fires effectively.

Committing to an emissions free society will not extinguish these bushfires, but it WILL create a future where mega fires killing thousands of living species (including humans) and destroying communities, will not become a future normal.

Whether Indigenous, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, pagan or atheist, we are custodians of our unique and precious land. I believe Jesus would have said: ‘Get off your a**e and act for the good of humanity – there lies your God!’ Let’s all work together to make the change that is necessary, whether we like it or not. Let’s be brave!

Tracy

Fans Can’t Stop Loving Parkes Elvis Festival

January 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

ALL DRESSED UP… There was no shortage of very vibrant and colourful costumes for one of the highlights of the Parkes Elvis Festival, the Northparkes Mines Street Parade.

Bushfires, heat waves, dust storms and even a destructive thunder storm could not stop the 28th annual Parkes Elvis™ Festival delivering another year of phenomenal performances with approximately 25,000 fans from Australia and around the world dressing up for some hip swivelling action.

The five-day celebration of The King featuring more than 200 shows not only blew away festival goers, but also managed to raise thousands of dollars for the Rural Fire Service, WIRES and the Red Cross.

There were plenty of opportunities to contribute with the Mayor’s appeal and feature artist Dean Z’s contribution to little six-year- old Sebastian Bodiam dancing to Elvis outside his grandma’s shop, RFS collections in Cooke Park and an impromptu show by two of the original Wiggles.

“The Parkes Elvis Festival has grown into a global phenomenon, bringing people together from all corners of the world. We’ve had an electrifying five days of entertainment which saw Central West NSW transform into a vibrant cultural hub like no other,” said Festival Director Cathy Treasure.

US Elvis Tribute Artist Dean Z wowed audiences with his energetic tribute to the King, international sensation Toki Toyokazu of Sendai, Japan won the the preliminary round of the international 2020 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, the 2020 Priscilla Face of the Festival was awarded to Shania Sarsfield of Wellington, and the Northparkes Mines Street Parade saw over 10,000 people line the streets to enjoy Elvis-themed floats, vintage cars, motorcycles, marching bands and colourful costumes.

Fans are already planning costumes for next year’s theme Speedway.
