Henry Parkes Museum Remains ‘Moonstruck’

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

If you have missed out on all or some of the significant celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing last month, don’t fear as the Henry Parkes Museum’s special exhibition is still ongoing.

One of the Parkes & District Historical Society’s members, Rosemary Prior, put in alot of work and care into correlating lots of information into an amazing story. “We are all amateurs and volunteers doing the best we can,” said Rosemary. The feature piece of the exhibit are two items on loan from Dorothy MacDonald. Her parents, Jean and George Stanford from Peak Hill, both worked at the telescope during construction and the moon landing. They received a NASA certificate signed by all three astronauts for their support of the first lunar landing. The second item is a signed framed photo of George with his dog at his tractor looking at the telescope being built. Five times more visitors than usual streamed to the museum over the anniversary weekend from all over Australia and overseas. “People enjoyed our display, especially our feature on how the radio telescope was build,” said Rosemary.

She remembers driving out to the construction site on Sundays as a child to look over the fence, and watching the moon landing at school. “My husband, Bruce, lived opposite the site and grew up with it.”

Rosemary said it was very special compiling the exhibit as it is so much part of the history of Parkes. “It put Parkes on the map!”

Netball Semi-Finals Tomorrow

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday was a very foggy morning with the smallest members of Parkes Netball, the NET division, having their presentation.

The committee hopes you have had a fun year of Netball and can’t wait for you to come back next year.

Saturday also saw the last general rounds of divisions 1 and Go. With some games ending in a draw or forfeit, this has made the points tally mix up a little with some surprising results.

Semi-finals start this weekend with a reminder to respect all players and officials while on and off the courts. Umpires decisions are final.

Results Division 1:
• Tigers 28 v Pumas 28 – MVP Ella Harbidge and Matayah Guy
• Wildcats forfeit to Panthers

Results Go Division:
• Pumas 10 v Wildcats 5 – MVP Mhairi Wyllie and Grace Dunford
• Tigers 18 v Panthers 16 – MVP Jose Jennings and Sienna Barber

Don’t Chew That!

Do you find yourself gnawing on a pencil when you’re deep in thought? Do you like chomping on ice cubes to keep your mouth cool? While these everyday nervous habits aren’t likely to cause major health problems, they can result in chipped or cracked teeth and inconvenient dental repairs.

If you feel compelled to pop a pencil in your mouth or create crushed ice instead of letting your refrigerator do the work, consider softer-on-the-teeth alternatives. Such as chewing sugar-free gum. Doing so increases saliva production, tames the acids in your mouth and strengthens enamel.

Apples, carrots, cucumbers and celery are other sensible choices when it comes to satisfying your need to chew. These crunchy edibles are not only good for your
body but great for your teeth.

Of course, scheduling regular dental check-ups is another great way to ensure your teeth are in tip-top condition.

For all your dental needs please call us at Riaz Dental on 68621261 or visit www.riazdental.com.au.

Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk

Far too many women in Western NSW may be unaware of their risk of breast cancer, despite the fact that 9 in 10 women diagnosed don’t have a family history.

“The risk is real for every woman aged 50 to 74. One in eight women in NSW will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and less than 10 per cent of them will have a family history,” said WNSWLHD Breastscreen Manager, Meg O’Brien.

“That’s why all women in this age group should screen for breast cancer, regardless of whether they have a family history.”

“By detecting breast cancer early, breast screening not only saves lives but also reduces the likelihood of a woman needing invasive treatment.”

“The more having a mammogram with BreastScreen NSW becomes part of your normal two-yearly health routine, the easier it is to keep going.”

To book a mammogram with Breast- Screen NSW, phone 13 20 50, or book PH: 6862 1261 | 19 Church St, Parkes online by visiting breastscreen.nsw.gov.au.

From The Bush To The Big Smoke

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

The school holidays ended with a fun trip to Sydney for 11 Aboriginal students from Parkes, Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo.

The group included five students from Parkes namely Ajay Goolagong, Emily Helm, Michael Riley, Nicayden Greenwood and Kyah Turnbull.

The students participated in the annual Active Citizen Program of the Central West Police District. The packed program started with a visit to the GWS Giants AFL Club where they watched a training session, went on a tour of their facility, met players and watched a game. It was a rare opportunity and the participants really valued the experience.

The Marine Area Command of the NSW Water Police also provided a tour of their facility and some of their boats, which included a ride in Sydney Harbour. The weather could not have been better and this was the first cruise on Sydney Harbour for most of the young people.

Cumberland Council organised a cultural experience at Pemulwuy. The suburb is a practical example of reconciliation and is named after a local Aboriginal warrior. The group learned more about the warrior and the history of the local area. The young people painted their first pair of clap sticks, which is a ceremonious occasion, and took part in other traditional games and activities.

“This trip was an amazing experience,” said Senior Constable Daniel Greef. “It provided a number of once in a life time opportunities for both the staff and participants.”

Participants also took part in various local cultural activities; visited local businesses and community groups to find out why they give back to their communities; and discovered local career opportunities that were available to them and could build their skills. The program will conclude with a leadership camp in Canberra and Jindabyne.

They will climb to the summit of Mount Kosciusko, visit the Royal Military Academy, Duntroon, and the Australian War Memorial including a Last Post ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Transformation At Baker Dental

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Baker Dental, a long established dental practice in Parkes, has seen some changes over recent months.

Dr Daniel Terranova joined the team in March 2018 to work with Dr Tim Baker and Dr Chris Xu. Daniel has established himself as an honest and trustworthy dentist who is known for his gentle and caring manner.

Having previously lived on the Gold Coast for 18 years, Daniel now prefers the closeknit feel of a smaller town community. He enjoys all facets of general dentistry, with a particular interest in orthodontics, crown and bridge work, and recently started working with the new Cerec same day crown technology.

Daniel finds great satisfaction in relieving his patients of unnecessary pain. Outside of dentistry, he is an avid soccer fan and watches as many games as he can. He also enjoys watching movies, dining out and spending time with friends and family.

Daniel has worked with principal dentist- Dr Chris Xu for the past 18 months. Chris has been principal dentist at Baker Dental for the past four years and hands his role over with great confidence to Daniel as he moves to the Gold Coast for family reasons.

Dr Chris will be returning on a monthly basis for his regular patients ongoing treatment.

The newest addition to the practice is Dr Joe Hanna. Joe is an experienced dentist with an interest in oral surgery including under general anaesthesia and wisdom tooth removal. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio, USA in 1993, and became a permanent resident in Australia in June 1997.

He has a professional interest in oral surgery. His aims are to help to educate the community on the importance of dental health, provide reliable recommendations in the wellness of patients’ dental health, encourage people to make dental check-ups part of their life, and reassure nervous patients that sedation and general anaesthesia are available. Joe’s hobby is flying, and he volunteers his time to fly for Angel Flight Services.

Our Gal -Rhonda Brain

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I moved to Parkes in 1989.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m retired so I just swan around.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I have several favourites. I read, of course! Watch old western and musical movies, research war and Jewish history and do cryptic crosswords.

What makes you proud? Hearing from ex-students about the way they are nurturing their children, especially in brain development, from birth.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? A bear, so I could hibernate in winter.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Movies: Sound of Music and Friendly Persuasion. Song: How Great Thou Art (especially when Barb Newton sings it!) Books: The Source, Winnie-The-Pooh, The Bible, All Quiet On The Western Front. These are my choices because they all reflect my passions.

Tell us about your best holiday. On a group tour, lead by my brother, to Turkey in 1999 when we started an impromptu street dance with some uni students at Canakkale, attended the Dawn Service at Gallipoli when it was held at the original spot, on the beachfront and then, the service at Lone Pine Cemetery.

What is on your bucket list? River cruise from Budapest to Bucharest.

Your Pain Is Not Black And White

August 8, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

One in five Australians live with chronic pain.

Many Australians are new to the notion of chronic pain, as many believe that pain should go away when tissues heal after an illness or injury. This is not always the case.

Chronic pain is a complex condition characterised by pain that persists beyond the normal healing time of three months.

It is not always possible to pinpoint the cause of the pain and can be very frustrating for all involved. Chronic pain can be intense and unrelenting, and can lead to various degrees of disability if it is not managed well.

Pain management needs a multi-pronged approach. Medication is one element and the other two major elements are physical and cognitive therapy. Getting the best from pain management will involve optimising a range of strategies into practice on a daily basis, which can take time and effort to learn successfully.

A medication review with a pharmacist can assist you with pain management and can improve your quality of life. Medication reviews allow you to get a better understanding of your medications while the pharmacists can also make suggestions to see if anything can be made better, safer or simpler!

There is also a range of resources and support available for those living with chronic pain.

Come visit our friendly, passionate pharmacists at Parkes Pharmacy to learn more about optimising your chronic pain management.
