Students Aim For ‘Flying Colours’ Win At Birdman Rally

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes flag will be flying high at the prestigious Moomba Birdman Rally in Melbourne this weekend with 14 local students entering two planes.

Year 12 Engineering Studies students from Parkes High School and Parkes Christian School have been working tirelessly building a flying craft for each school making them the only entries from outside Victoria.

There are some exciting new developments this year with Moomba Birdman Rally allocating schools their own category to compete in, giving students opportunities to be more involved in the competition. Parkes High School will be taking part for the first time this year, while it will be the Parkes Christian School’s fourth time. They won the Flying Class section in 2017 with a distance of 11 metres making it the longest flight of the day.

“The students are excited to try their hand at gaining the title again,” said Parkes Christian School Design and Technology teacher Jason Wynstra.

“Entering the Moomba Birdman Rally has become a fun and exciting way for our Design and Technology students to engage with their classwork in a practical way, with the students now taking the competition very seriously.”

Jason said a major component of the Design and Technology syllabus was problem solving, and the competition was a great opportunity to explore that.

The Birdman Rally is a competition where members of the public build home-made gliders, hang gliders and human-powered aircraft to leap from a four-metre wharf, and compete for distance and entertainment value.

Our Bloke – Sean White

Sean White

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here?
I have been in Parkes for nearly 20 years. I find it quite a friendly place to live as most people are easy to get along with.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I own and run the pet shop in town and have been doing so for the last 10 years. It’s a rewarding experience helping so many people with their animals and seeing the joy on children’s faces.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Free time can be a hard thing to find when you’re a full-time single dad to three, but spending time with my children and my girlfriend and her children and finding time to catch up with friends.

What makes you proud? Seeing my children growing into fine young adults is the most rewarding and proud part of my life.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Favourite movie of all time: toss-up between St Elmo’s Fire and Shawshank Redemption for great storylines that draw you in.

Tell us about your best holiday. As a single father running a business and the household, any holiday is good, but just spending time on the coast is very relaxing.

What is on your bucket list? To climb Uluru and check out more of this great country.

Students ‘Sing’ Ugandan Choir’s Praises

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Middleton Public students were entertained by a visiting African choir last week. The 100% Hope Choir from Uganda put on a traditional performance with energetic dancing, excellent singing and loud drumming. Some students were invited to participate in the performance by playing the drums, dressing in traditional clothes and dancing.

Students also had the opportunity to talk with the Ugandan visitors to learn more about their country and lifestyle. The choir is on a tour of Australia raising funds to extend their school. Everyone agreed that it was a highlight of their school year so far and a thoroughly enjoyable morning.

Let’s Keep Our Town Clean

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

About 50 volunteers in Parkes joined thousands around the country last weekend in what has become the nation’s largest community based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day.

Last Friday five home schoolers did a clean up of the creek in PAC Park picking up about four black rubbish bags. The Parkes Dragon Boat Club had 14 members join in a clean up of Lake Endeavour collecting eight bags of rubbish and several large pieces before their training session Sunday morning. Another 20 volunteers cleaned up around town on Sunday morning.

Vaccinations at Parkes Pharmacy

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Did you know that as of January 2019 Pharmacists in NSW can now give a wider range of vaccinations?

This legislation change allows pharmacists who have completed additional professional training to give vaccinations
against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus (dTpa) as well as the influenza vaccine to those over the age of 16.

This is an exciting change for pharmacists and the community. As pharmacists we are ideally positioned to provide vaccination services. We are easily accessible, cost effective and convenient, no appointment needed! We are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of service and regular contact with patients allows us to identify at risk groups, provide early intervention and referrals when issues are identified.

Why are vaccinations so important?
Vaccinations protect individuals and the community from the deadly consequences of contracting the above conditions. When you receive a vaccination, you not only protect yourself but also protect those who for medical reasons cannot be vaccinated. This is called herd immunity.

Who benefits from this change?
We have already seen in 2018 that pharmacist immunisations contribute to higher vaccination rates, with significantly fewer deaths and hospitalisations being attributed to this. Everybody has individual circumstances in regards to their vaccination history. For example, many people born between the late 1960s and 1980s actually remain unvaccinated or are only partially immune to measles, mumps and rubella.

Call in to Parkes Pharmacy to discuss how this change can benefit you or to receive that booster shot you just didn’t get!

No Wealth, No Health!

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Dozens of Parkes residents were recently informed the Healthy Lifestyles Program they have come to rely on for their physical and psychological well-being would be discontinued by NSW Health.

They were notified in an unsigned letter that participants would be transferred to community-based exercise and activities, and attached a list of local sports clubs and gyms. “This is an insult to these people who have contributed to society their whole working lives,” said Member for Orange Philip Donato MP last Friday when he met with some of the residents.

“What is overlooked by NSW Health and the Government is the cost savings to the health system through the management and prevention of illness delivered by this program, which keeps people out of hospital beds.

“Given the emphasis upon mental health, especially in rural and regional NSW where isolation from services is prevalent, the mental health benefits from this program are enormous. I support the Parkes community and their call to have this program re-instated.”

Is Your Tongue A Funny Colour?

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Your tongue provides insights into your overall health. It should be pink, moist, smooth and glistening. When it isn’t, see a professional.

White: If your tongue has a white coating it could be a fungal infection. That means something has upset the normal bacteria balance in your mouth. A patchy white covering of your tongue could be leukoplakia, often seen among smokers.
Red: Pink is normal but if your tongue is bright red you may have scarlet fever. A fever and rash may accompany this highly contagious bacterial infection. Seek professional help immediately.
Black: Another sign of unusual bacteria growth is a black or dark brown hairy-looking coating. Reducing sugary foods, better brushing and quitting smoking can often help.
Purple: If your tongue appears a shade of purple or violet, no need to be alarmed. You’ve merely had some grape juice. If you haven’t had any grape juice call us!

Question of the Week?

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

What makes autumn special for you?

Aileen Ahearne: It is my favourite time of year, not only because my birthday is on the first day of autumn, but also because of the weather: it is not so hot and not very cold.

Craig Harry: Summer is too long and too hot and I can’t handle it. Autumn is the best time of year for me with its fresh nights; medium, beautiful clear days; the smells and the leaves – I love everything about it.

Mavis Jarrett: It is just a lovely time of year and so good to have summer over with and get cooler weather. Good to have a break from the extremes of summer, and before the really cold weather sets in.

Paint Australia REaD: Rhonda Brain, creative director of the Paint the Town REaD initiative received a cheque of
$5,000 from Phil Donato last Friday for The Aussie Book Relay from Perth to Pacific starting later this month to spread the message of the importance of reading, talking and singing to your child from birth to three years.

Free Cuppa: With 98 businesses in 22 local government areas across NSW joining forces, the 2019 ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme is ready for another year. The multi-award winning scheme, launched in Bathurst last week, offers visiting drivers who have travelled 100km from home, a complimentary cup of tea or coffee at any participating business. The scheme started on 1st March and will run until 31st May. “It is a win-win-win,” said Parkes Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor. “It’s especially a win for road safety as tired drivers will stop to take a break, it’s a win for local towns as they attract more stopping visitors and it’s
a win for the local participating businesses as they attract more customers, who usually buy something with their free cuppa.” The full list of participating businesses are on www.freecuppa.com.au or pick up a brochure from Visitor Information Centres.

17 Million: Return and Earn has been a runaway success in the Central West with 17 million containers returned to local reverse vending machines. This includes more than 5.4 million returned in Parkes, almost 10 million drink containers in the two machines in Orange and 1.8 million in Forbes. The 17 million returned drink cans and bottles equals $1.7 million back in the pockets of local residents. Since Return and Earn began just over a year ago more than 1.4 billion containers have been collected at return points across NSW and eligible drink container litter volume
has reduced by 44%. “I thank everyone in the Central West who is already using the scheme and encourage anyone who hasn’t yet tried it, to visit a return point to claim their 10 cent refund,” said Nationals Candidate for Orange Kate Hazelton. “Any local schools, charities, community or sporting groups that want to be listed as a local donation partner can visit the Return and Earn website to register their interest at www.returnandearn.org.au.

Boost for Parkes Station: Plans are i the works to make Parkes Station fully accessible thanks to the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program. Upgrades could include improvements to the platform, waiting rooms and toilets, re-grading the ramps and footpath, as well as the creation of additional accessible parking spaces. Parkes is one of a number of stations across regional NSW that are scheduled for upgrades.
