Notorious Intersection To Get Upgrade

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

notoriously difficult intersection in Parkes will be made safer through a Federal Government grant of over $100,000.
Riverina MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack announced a $102,000 grant for the Clarinda and Currajong Street intersection through the 2019-20 Black Spot.

The funding would go towards creating pedestrian refuges on either side of Clarinda Street, better ramp access, better footpaths, new line markings and improving street lighting.

“This intersection will be much safer to navigate,” said the Deputy Prime Minister at the site on Sunday. Parkes Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton said Council was delighted with the funding.

“We’ve been calling for the money for about 12 months, and plan to start with the improvements as soon as possible.”

She said the improvements would make the intersection much easier to navigate, especially during harvest time, and that it would tie in with the planned upgrade of the main street in Parkes.

According to Michael the Parkes community’s input is critical to identifying key black spots in the electorate. “None of these projects would be delivered without the local community’s vital input and I’d urge and encourage all residents and motorists in the Riverina and Central West to nominate projects for future funding rounds,” he said.

Betty Somers Named Woman Of The Year

March 7, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes resident Betty Somers has been named the 2019 Orange Electorate Woman of the Year for her outstanding services to the community. She received the award in the presence of more than 30 family members and friends at the Parkes Shire Council last week as part of the NSW Women of the Year Awards.

“Betty Somers is a woman who has impressed myself and many others with her exceptional level of dedication to her community, volunteering in various roles virtually every day of the week for many years,” said Member for Orange Phil Donato.

“She possesses that rare quality of an endless capacity to reach out to help people in her community; whether it be to
provide bereavement support through her training in pastoral care, or by delivering meals as part of the Meals on Wheels program for the past 33 years.”

Betty also visits frail and elderly residents, and regularly performs pastoral care services at the Southern Cross aged care facility.

Parkes Mayor Ken Keith, who has known Betty since childhood, said he could not think of a more worthy recipient in Parkes. Betty, in her true humble demeanour, said she was left speechless with the recognition. “I am very overcome by the award.”

She thanked everyone who has supported her on her journey of faith since early childhood. Betty’s daughter-in-law Lindy Tanswell said it was a very fitting award for a person who feels like her own mum. “I am very honoured to be part of the family.”

Saddle Up For Third Parkes Rodeo Stampede

February 28, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

If you are after some thrill and excitement this weekend, the third Steve Magill Earthmoving Parkes Rodeo Stampede at the Parkes Showgrounds is on a trajectory to provide even more knock out performances than before.

In March 2017 the event produced one of the greatest wrecks in International Rodeo Clown Matt Darmody’s 15-year career when the veteran bullfighter was flung in the air by one of the meanest bulls on the rodeo circuit. Last year the explosive performance of “Walter Whip and the Flames” lit up the arena in a fire cracking spectacular.

For tomorrow night’s spectacular Zac Maher has warmed up the feature bull “ONSLAUT” from the L and M Rodeo Company and is on fire coming to Parkes. Troy Cross is another star on the comeback trail and has pocketed almost $10,000 since Christmas making him arguably the hottest bull rider on the circuit at the moment.

He will be hungry for another win. The committee has worked on improving the event with more food, better seating
and extra entertainment. Bring your camera to catch the Trick Riders from Tamworth. The event is the last rodeo in the Southern Zone before the finals, and set to be a huge draw card for the top cowboys and cowgirls chasing championship points and will include: Saddle Bronc Riding, the original rodeo event; Bareback Bronc riding the suicide event of rodeo; Bull Riding, the only event a cowboy can earn over one million dollars a year; and Ladies Barrel Racing, introducing the ladies of the professional rodeo.

Spotlight On Trundle

February 28, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Two major infrastructure projects in Trundle received special attention last Thursday. Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless cut the ribbon to officially open the revamped, refitted and restored Berryman Park Oval, while a sod turning ceremony was held for the refurbishment and construction of a new amenities complex at the Trundle Showground.

Joined by Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith OAM, Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton and community groups from across Trundle, Rick said: “$500,000 was granted to the Trundle Progress Association for the upgrades. It’s wonderful news that this recently renovated oval can now be used by the community.”

“We’ve provided new seating and grandstands, put in a new amenities block, tore down sixty-year-old fencing and put in new railing, installed new flood lighting and built a new footpath.”

Peter Kelly from the Trundle Progress Association said the community spirit and comradery amongst Trundle residents got these projects happening. “As the home of the Trundle Boomers Rugby League Club, Trundle Ducks Cricket Club and the annual ABBA Festival, Berryman Oval is a hub for the whole community,” said the Mayor.

The Trundle Showground received a grant of $200,000 for a new, modern and functional amenities block replacing the nearly 50-year-old facility.

The Healing Power Of Pet Fish

The continuing drought in our region is causing high stress levels for many people in the shire. There are many ways of relieving stress, but keeping pet fish is probably not often considered. It has been proven there are health and
emotional benefits that come from having a fish tank. People are attracted to water. It is in our nature as one of the environmental stimuli we find very soothing is the sound of running water.

There is nothing more calming than going to the beach and watching the waves roll on shore and listening to the sound of the surf pounding the beach. This is also why many people go fishing in streams and lakes. It is not just about catching fish, but the benefit you get from taking in the sounds of nature and the beauty of the surrounding
area.

An aquarium brings the calming effects of nature indoors. Once an aquarium is established and decorated with rocks and plants, watching fish swim reduces stress and anxiety. The gurgling sound of the bubbles add to the therapeutic effect of looking at the tank. Also relaxing are the colours of both the fish and background inside the tank. Studies show it can reduce blood pressure and emotional agitation. That is why you get fish tanks in places like a dentist offices, nursing homes, and restaurants.

You can start small and it need not cost you a fortune. Sean White at The Pet Barn in Parkes is the person to get you going. He has everything you need including tropical and golf fish, and can order in specific species.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived here for about 50 years. It is a great town. We would not want to live anywhere else.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I have a studio at home where I teach art and mosaic classes which I enjoy immensely.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Gardening and playing in the studio.

What makes you proud? My family, and being part of the Parkes community.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? My husband’s little dog, called Daisy, because of all the treats and spoiling she receives.

What is your all time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? A Star is Born; and any Rod Stewart songs.

Tell us about your best holiday. An art tour in England and France, including a visit to Monet’s garden.

What is on your bucket list? To be a great grandmother so I can spoil more lovely babies; and to see everyone, especially men, have an interest or hobby so that when they retire there is something to look forward to every day.
