Drought Brings PM To Central West To Announce Further Support

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Prime Minister was in Forbes on Sunday to announce further support for drought stricken communities. “We are making changes to ensure farmers are even more resilient, as our farmers are the best in the world,” said Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull at HE Silos in Forbes.

The assistance provides immediate relief to communities, tax breaks for fodder storage and simplifying the application form for Farm Household allowance.

An additional $75 million will be given to 60 councils, of which 30 are in NSW, to address local needs. Parkes is among the councils in NSW, Queensland and Victoria which will initially receive $1m grants.

“Council will host a community forum in the coming weeks to discuss how the money can be applied for best effect across the Parkes Shire,” said Parkes Mayor Cr Ken Keith OAM. “Landholders, agri-businesses and local support organisations are encouraged to attend to provide ideas and suggestions.”

Further to Sunday’s announcement the Parkes Shire Council made a resolution on Tuesday to activate immediate drought support measures. Councillors voted to adopt a suite of drought relief initiatives, which include immediate
access to domestic and stock water free of charge for rural residents from Council’s stand pipes. Council will also investigate options for subsidising potable water cartage.

Additionally, as a small token of assistance to drought affected community members, Council unanimously supported the resolution to provide free entry to all shire pools for the coming season. “Opening our pools in Parkes, Trundle, Tullamore and Peak Hill free of charge, could serve to provide some respite from the day-to-day distress of this worsening drought,” said Cr Bill Jayet.

Parkes Shire Mayor, Councillor Ken Keith OAM said while the measures were not a long-term solution, they would provide some short-term relief for our farming families doing it tough.

For information on current state and federal government relief packages contact the Central Region’s Rural Financial Counsellor at www.rfcscr.com.au or phone 1800 940 404.

Any rural rate payer in the Parkes Shire seeking confidential discussions around accessing Council’s hardship provision for rates can email payment.help@parkes.nsw.gov.au or phone 02 6861 2304.

Mock Crash Marks 10 Years

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

For the past ten years more than 4,000 Year 10 students from 11 high schools have been confronted with the hard hitting, realistic message of the mock crash demonstration. Last Friday the special milestone was celebrated with a commemorative book launch after the morning demonstration at the Parkes High School’s Multi-Purpose Centre.

The program’s success is evident in a decrease of 27% in crashes on local roads involving young drivers. “I saw it for the first time last year and was super impressed,” said MP for Orange, Phil Donato. “I was a police officer for 22
years, and I saw accidents happen exactly as portrayed here. It is very uncomfortable to watch, but sends a strong message to future drivers and is a great service to our community.”

Parkes Mayor Ken Keith OAM handed a commemorative plaque to Melanie Suitor, Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, saying the program has been her baby for the past 10 years.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with over 100 actors, extras, crew and helpers over the past 10 years,” said Melanie. “We want to show young drivers what is happening on the roads and encourage them to make better, safer decisions as drivers and passengers as they get their driver’s licence.”

‘We believe strongly in the Not A Statistic! Youth Driver Education Program as it is vitally important to give young people an insight into the consequences of bad driving habits,” said Central West Police District Superintendent Chris Taylor.

There’s No Time Like Parkes Show Time

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Show is one of the biggest agricultural shows west of the Blue Mountains and has been going for 138 years. The show continues to be one of the major events in our community, and this year the program will once again not disappoint with something for everyone.

“We have a dedicated and passionate committee and a wonderful group of volunteers who work tirelessly together to ensure such a great event runs smoothly,” said first time Parkes Show president Peter Unger.

Many people have been preparing for months to enter into the vast array of sections and exhibits at the show, which offers lots of opportunity to people to show their talent and produce.

The entertainment program has always been a highlight of the show, and this year the committee has ensured to bring back all the crowd favourites. The FMX Bike show is back, as well as the award-winning free kids zone.

Keep next Tuesday night free to watch the ever popular, and best fireworks display west of Sydney starting at 7:15pm. This year you don’t have to go to the Deni Ute muster, as the show will bring the first Ute Barrel Race to Parkes for the first time. Be there on Wednesday at 4:30pm to be part of the action. The action continues on Wednesday night with the hard-hitting Demolition Derby.

Other entertaining program events to look out for are the Young Farmers Relay and the dog jump just for starters. The ever popular Parkes Showgirl competition will be decided on Tuesday at 3pm between Amelia Tanswell and Jade Nolan when the winner is announced. David and Angela Copeland and Caitlin Herbert will be judging the competition. The Teenage Showgirl, and Junior Showgirl and Junior Showman will also be announced on Tuesday
afternoon.

Today (Friday) is the last day to get a three-day pass for the show at $15 for adults and $5 for schoolies (children currently attending school). Children not yet at school get free entry. Tickets available at Byrnes Clothing and Embroidery, Cunningham’s IGA and the Show Office. “Come along and enjoy what our show has to offer,” said Peter.

Proud Day For Vietnam Vets

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Vietnam Veterans Day was well attended by ex-service men and members of the public at the Vietnam War Memorial in Parkes last Saturday morning.

The day commemorates the Battle of Long Tan on 18th August 1966, and pays tribute to the 59,520 personnel who served in Vietnam. Three Parkes men paid the supreme sacrifice. They were 235250 Captain Tony Danilenko (MID), 216445 Corporal Denis Donnelly and 2782783 Private Dougie Powter.

“It is not a memorial about issues, about the glorification of the war, or the justification of political decisions. Rather it recognises sacrifice and suffering and the honour and sense of duty carried out by young men and women,” said Paul Thomas, a Parkes veteran.

Question of the Week?

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

What is the main message of the Mock Crash Demonstration that stands out for you? Parkes High students answer.

Jess Jones: If I go to a party to not get into any car. It is not worth the risk.

Ella Morrisey: I need to be aware who I get into a car with and how much alcohol they’ve had. To never take a risk!

Daisy Burns: To keep in contact with my parents when I’m at a party and call them if I need a lift, or stay there until I am good to drive. I need to make sure to always get a safe lift home.

The world record attempt will be made at Parkes Christian School’s Spring Fair on Saturday, 15th September from 9am to 2pm. Parkes Wins Prestigious Engineering Award

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Shire Council has been recognised for raising the benchmark of Australian engineering standards by winning the most highly regarded engineering honours in the country.

The Parkes Integrated Water Infrastructure Renewal Program won the Energy, Water and Resources Project category at the NSW 2018 Australian Excellence in Engineering Awards last week. Parkes Shire Council proudly shares the award with construction partners John Holland, Hunter H2O and Maddocks.

“Council works incredibly hard to deliver progress and value to the community, and we are incredibly proud to have been recognised with this prestigious accolade,” said Parkes Shire Mayor, Councillor Ken Keith OAM.

The $100m capital works program includes the Lake Endeavour dam safety upgrades, the Lachlan River pump station and bore 8 refurbishments, as well as the major infrastructure construction that delivered Parkes a new water treatment plant, new sewage treatment plant and the advanced water recycling facility, and ancillary infrastructure augmentations.

The Parkes program competed with some of the state’s most prominent engineering projects, including the City of Sydney’s Green Square Library and Plaza development, and the $154 million Wynyard Walk. The Parkes program will be a finalist in the National Australian Engineering Excellence Awards in September.

Mayoral Notes…

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

This week Council voted to adopt a suite of drought relief initiatives, which include immediate access to domestic and stock water free of charge for rural residents from Council’s stand pipes. While this isn’t a long-term solution, we hope this will bring some short-term relief for our farming families.

Council will also host a community forum in the coming weeks to discuss how best to spend the $1 million allocation by the Federal Government as part of their drought assistance package. I have also lobbied the government for the reinstatement of a Parkes based Rural Financial Counsellor on a visit to Canberra this week as part of the CENTROC Drought Committee delegation. For more details about Council’s drought relief measures, visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au

Last week the Parkes Integrated Water Infrastructure Renewal Program was recognised for raising the benchmark of Australian engineering standards by winning the Energy, Water and Resources Project category at the NSW 2018 Australian Excellence in Engineering Awards. It is more important than ever to invest in smart, sustainable solutions to guarantee long-term water security and through this program we have been able to deliver state-of-the-art treatment plants and strengthen our entire water network.

This week Council crews have been working to repair a collapsed culvert along Collingwood Lane (SR148). The works are expected to take a number of weeks to enable the new concrete to cure. Motorists are advised that the section of road will be temporarily closed to enable the repairs to be carried out.

Locals are encouraged to drop by our Council stand at the Parkes Show next week. Our staff will be on hand to speak
with residents and answer any questions they may have about Council works, services, initiatives and events.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend
Cr Ken Keith OAM
Mayor of Parkes Shire

20 Teams at Classic Triples

August 23, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Excellent bowls were played at the Parkes Classic Triples Tournament last weekend. There were 20 teams from as far away as Towadgerie, Lake Cargelligo, West Wyalong and Mudgee. The trying windy conditions added to the skills needed.

The first prize went to West Dubbo with 4 wins +47. Second prize went to Parkes/Forbes team of Jan Waugh, Kim Evans and Pat Cooney with 4 wins +41. Mudgee came third with 3 wins +61, and fourth prize went to Liz Byrne Parkes with 3 wins +45.

It was a magnificent team effort by our members in catering and cleaning, ensuring the day ran smoothly. It was much appreciated by all.

A few brave ladies played social bowls this week in slightly improved conditions. A long end played was won by Di Howell. In two games of pairs played, Di Greenhalgh and Liz Byrne defeated Ros Taylor and Merilyn Rodgers.
Kay Craft and Gwenda Carty defeated Di Howell and Marja Iffland.

There will be no official bowls played on the Parkes Show Day next week, but anyone can turn up and play if they wish.
