Hand and Finger Injuries

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

When you think about how much we use our hands especially when playing ball sports, it’s not hard to understand why hand and finger injuries are so common. Most of these injuries heal spontaneously, which is why they are often neglected by athletes. Many people don’t seek help until it is too late for effective treatment however an early, accurate diagnosis to identify potentially serious injuries can prevent long term functional impairment and deformity.

Knowledge of the mechanism of injury or how the injury happened can also help with an accurate diagnosis. A punching injury often results in a fracture to one of the metacarpal bones, commonly the base of the fifth metacarpal. A direct blow to the point of the finger often causes a dislocation or sprain of one of the finger joints. Sometimes the finger flexor tendon can pull a plug of bone off its attachment causing an avulsion fracture.

This most commonly involves the ring finger and occurs when a player grabs an opponents clothing during a tackle.
As a general rule of thumb, if there is any deformity present, either with the hand open or closed, persistent swelling or any of the hand or finger joints don’t move as they should, it is important to have the injury checked out by a professional. Some fractures may require surgery, some immobilisation or splinting. Sprains or dislocations may require swelling management with ice or an oedema glove and exercises to prevent loss of range of motion.

An early diagnosis and appropriate management can prevent a lifetime of deformity and loss of function.

For the fitness of you,
Linda Reilly

Dinner Under The Blue Dish

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

A group of approximately 300 people gathered at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope last Friday night to enjoy Dinner Under the Blue Dish, an event organised by Currajong Autism & Special Needs Group. The event was inspired by the annual global initiative that bathes iconic landmarks and structures around the world in blue light to support and celebrate World Autism Awareness Month.

“The night far exceeded our expectations,” said Angela Wilson, co-founder of the group. “It was such a lovely evening, people were very relaxed and enjoyed spending time with their family.”

“There was such a fantastic atmosphere. We had live music playing, and the astronomical society set up their telescopes for people to have a look at the night sky,” said Angela. The Parkes Observatory Visitors Centre also stayed open for the evening.

“The number of people that turned up for dinner at the Dish Café took Craig a bit by surprise, although he had put on plenty of staff. People were lined up out the door for much of the night.” Some people chose to dine inside the café, while others spread out on the lawn on picnic rugs and chairs.

The raffle raised a total of $927.55 for the Currajong Autism & Special Needs Group, which will be put towards a free family fun day for families with children with special needs, in Term 4 this year.

“As the event went so well, we hope to do it again next year,” said Angela.

Boars Begin With A Win

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Boars have opened their New Holland Agriculture Cup account with a double header win against rivals Dubbo Rhinos. The Boars second-grade team faced the Rhinos, under the coaching of Ethan Kosef. The challenge this year was to start strong and the team didn’t disappoint. Mitch Hutchings crossed for the first of his three tries, then kicked the conversion to give Parkes the lead within the first five minutes. Ben Rathbone’s defence on the line was instrumental in keeping Rhinos scoreless for the match, with the Boars final score being 33.

First points on the board for the firstgrade game went to the Rhinos, due to a Boars handling error. The Boars, coached by Joshua Miles, soon evened the scores thanks to Ben Ryan’s tries, along with the combined strength of the Boars front row holding well. A penalty scrum to Parkes on the 15m took the half time score to 22-5.

In the second-half, the tempo of the game increased, and tempers started to flair. The Boars tenacity was awarded when Rodgers successfully landed 3 penalty goals, then crossed undefended under the posts in the final moments to seal the match with a final score of 43-22.

Players player and winner of the Old Boys Jersey went to Sam Davis on Debut. The 2018 New Holland Agriculture player of the day was awarded to Mitch Hutchings from Boars second grade.

A vote of thanks to the referees Chris Reynolds (2nds) and Paul Hannock (1sts) for recognising the very hot conditions and allowing extra drink breaks for both teams. Next weekend the Boars travel to Narromine’s Cale Oval to face the Gorillas. Narromine had a strong win over Mudgee Wombats in their first round so this will be a
big match for both teams. Seconds kick off at 1:50pm with First at 3:15pm.

Our Gal – Helen Westcott

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Helen Westcott

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here?
I have called Parkes Home for almost 50 years , coming here in February 1969, after marrying Malcolm. I was here for a short time in Trundle and Parkes for 3 years from 62-64. Parkes is a very friendly community and we have a progressive council looking after us.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I was a teacher at Parkes High School for many years and since retiring at the end of 1997, we moved into the family home in town and started operating Kadina Bed and Breakfast, the 1st in Parkes, celebrating 20 years next month. Both Mal and I thoroughly enjoy hosting people from all areas of Australia and overseas and have made friends with many. We have just returned from Japan where we met up with two ladies that we hosted many years ago and we call that a highlight of our trip.

What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? Golf is an interest I have, and I play 9 holes most Tuesdays and Fridays. I enjoy, cooking, sewing, reading and chatting with friends.

What are you really good at? First up procrastinating, and then more seriously, trusting that I offer friendship and hospitality to those who choose to stay at Kadina B&B.

If you could have a superpower what would it be? To have rain when we think we need it, but I know it is in God’s hands when it is delivered and I must be patient  and act wisely, encouraging those around me.

What is your pet hate? People not encouraging and helping others. Making extra work for some, for example, people who don’t place litter in the correct receptacle

Tell us about your best holiday. We wanted to take our sons on an overseas holiday, but with a drought in 82/83, it was made difficult. However, we decided on Lord Howe Island, a decision we will never regret. As we left the Island one of the boys said, “wonder who will return here first”. Both have been back.

Water Security For All Seasons

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

A new Advanced Water Recycling Facility in Parkes will produce high-quality recycled water for irrigation purposes and reduce commercial demand for potable water and is phase one of a three-phase Wastewater Treatment Plant and Recycled Water Scheme development.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Mr McCormack said the project gave the region greater water security into the future. “Water is the lifeblood of our regional towns and cities and the Advanced Water Recycling Facility will ensure Parkes can thrive into the future.

Not only will it leave more water available for domestic use, it will also provide a water source that is drought-resistant.”

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the project represented a major investment in local jobs and the region’s economic future.

“This project will deliver substantial benefits to the Parkes community, supporting 61 jobs during construction,” Dr McVeigh said. “The facility reduces the need to pump water 25 kilometres from Lake Endeavour Dam, and 30 kilometres from the Lachlan River and Lachlan Borefields, saving money and providing substantial energy savings for the Parkes community.”

“The Advanced Water Recycling Facility creates an entirely new water source for the town, allowing us to maintain our parks and sporting grounds year-round,” said Deputy Mayor of Parkes Shire Council Barbara Newton.

“We would like to thank the Australian Government for partnering with Parkes Shire Council to make the Advanced Water Recycling Facility possible. This will provide water security and build community capacity, positioning Parkes well into the future.”

Are You Forgetting To Brush This Important Part Of Your Teeth?

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

We all know how important it is to brush your teeth for two minutes, two times each day. And while we often discuss the importance of brushing your gums adequately, we find that many patients miss this frequently forgotten part of the mouth—the inside surface of your teeth!

The inside surface consists of the areas that face your tongue and palate. It’s easy and common for food and debris to build up in this area.

When brushing your teeth, it’s also crucial to use the correct amount of pressure—too soft and you won’t clean the area, while brushing too aggressively can cause bleeding.

Remember to brush the inner surface of your teeth by breaking up your brushing time—one minute for the outer surface and gums and one minute for the inside and tongue. For all your dental needs please call us at Riaz Dental on (02) 6862 1261.
