Parkes Shire Council Message

August 4, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

council

Parkes Shire Council would like to thank all the residents who participated in National Tree Day on Sunday, 31st July. As part of the 50 Million Trees Program, Parkes Shire Council teamed up with Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) and more than 30 volunteers to plant 320 trees, just off the Condobolin Road. It turned out to be a perfect winter’s day for planting and participants were rewarded for all their hard work with a BBQ lunch, generously donated by Parkes Coles.

Local Cricket stalwart Greg Morrissey was honoured last Friday, 29th July with the official naming of the Greg Morrissey Field at McGlynn Park in Parkes. Council received a proposal to name the field in recognition of Mr Morrissey and his many years of dedicated service to the cricket fraternity within New South Wales, as well as his untiring devotion to the community of Parkes.

Council marked the occasion by unveiling the new Greg Morrissey Field sign. We wish all of the Shire’s Show committees the best of luck, with the first of the region’s shows kicking off next week. The 93rd Tullamore Show will have something for everyone on offer when the gates open to the public on Friday, 12th August. Staff from Parkes Shire Council will be there and we encourage everyone to swing by the Council exhibit and say hello.

Council has gone into caretaker mode with nominations for new councillors now open. Anyone planning on becoming a candidate must nominate with the Returning Officer before 12 noon on 10th August 2016. Nomination forms can be obtained on the election web page www.votensw.info The NSW local council general elections will be held on Saturday, 10th September 2016.

Enjoy your weekend.

Spacecats Triumph Over Dubbo

July 28, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Spacecats1

The Parkes Spacecats reigned 20 – 0 over Dubbo’s Westside when the final bell went in Round 11 of the Group XI competition last weekend. The 2015 premieres had to work hard from the Spacecats’ kick off. A great catch by Brittany Dunesny gave Parkes first touch of the ball, and with quick hands they make ground, but the wet field complicated the kick.

Hard work from Ella-J Harris sees Parkes within 20m and allows Brittney Ryan to open the tally. Ella-J and Demi managed to break through the Westside defence, but a turnover occurs and Westside kicks for touch. It does not find the sideline and Emma Bayley adds another four in the far corner.

Demi Winter uses a Westside kick to the sideline to put pedal to the metal and goes over beside the posts for Parkes’ 3rd try. With the Spacecats wanting more they keep Westside in their half, which works well for Emma Bayley to score her second and bring the half time score to 16 – 0. After half time a Spacecat error, sees Westside 15 come within inches of scoring, but the Parkes’ girls turned up the heat to push them back to were they started. Sally Dwyer and Demi Winter made great tags, while Sam Cox found the score line to take Parkes to 20. The Spacecats defended well when required to deny Westside any points on the day.

The Parkes Spacemen executive and the league tag team would like to thank their major guernsey sponsor Parkes Services Club and sleeve sponsors 1. Simply Bellissima by Kim, 2. Cunninghams IGA Parkes, 3. Nicko’s Bricklaying, 4. Parkes GP, 5. Bunnamagoo Wines, 6. BMJC (The Moran boy’s), 7. La Bella, 8. Dippin Dots, 9. Parkes Mensland, 10. THD Studio, 11. Parkes Railway Bowling Club, 12. Parkes Services Club, 13. Nangar Gems. The team plays the Narromine Jets on Sunday.

Elvis Festival Wins Gold

July 28, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Regional Tourism Awards 2016-121 - (Medium)

The Parkes Elvis Festival was declared the winner in the Festivals and Events category at the 2016 Regional Tourism Awards held in Euchuca Moama last Saturday. Parkes Shire Council also picked up silver in the Destination Marketing category for the development and implementation of the ‘Parkes it all adds up’ brand and associated campaigns.

Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith said “This is a fantastic achievement for the Parkes Elvis Festival and is a credit to all of the hard work that Council staff and volunteers put into the Festival”. “The Elvis Festival has grown to be an internationally recognised event, which injects $11 million into the local economy.

However, the festival would not be possible without the support of the local community and the assistance of over 100 volunteers,” Cr Keith said. The Regional Tourism Awards are held annually to acknowledge excellence in tourism in the four regional tourism areas of Central, Inland, Murray and Riverina.

“The 13th annual Regional Tourism Awards showcased some of the best tourism attractions, products and operators in NSW and Victoria”, said Jane Barnes, Chair of the Awards. “This year, all entrants were of a high calibre. In some categories the marks between finalists were so close that a silver and bronze award was given.” Parkes Shire Council is now looking forward to the state tourism awards, with the finalists to be announced on 30th September.

Children And Community Have Grounds To Celebrate

This year Planet Ark celebrates 20 years of National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day – Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Each year around 3,000 schools across Australia take part in Schools Tree Day,
encouraging future generations to learn how to plant and care for seedlings as they grow.

Parkes Shire Council have invited local schools to participate in the event today by providing schools willing to branch out with up to ten native trees and shrubs towards any planting activity. “Schools Tree Day can mark the beginning of a long-term environmental program,” said Michael Chambers, Parkes Shire Council’s Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator.

“By engaging students of all ages in an outdoor, fun and hands on activity like tree planting, we can encourage their passion for the environment, maths, science and creative arts or simply contribute to creating beautiful school grounds,” Michael added. Planet Ark’s 2012 Planting Trees report revealed that interacting with nature helps children’s health, wellbeing and development. Time spent in nature helps kids thrive!

The wider community can also use the opportunity to grow on National Tree Day on Sunday. Parkes Shire Council and Central West Lachlan Landcare invite the community to dig in by planting more than 400 trees on a corridor of land adjacent to the Parkes Waste Depot with access 3.8km out on the Condobolin Road. Activities start from 10am and will conclude with a sausage sizzle at 1pm.

Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than three million participants have planted 21 million native trees, shrubs and grasses.

Barnard Comes Up Trumps

July 28, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

A brilliant return to form by Phil Barnard saw him take out Saturday’s Whites Electrical 18 hole Stableford on a water logged Parkes Golf Course. Barnard finished the event on 38 points and had to survive a three-way countback from junior Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler to take home the sponsor’s trophies. The Ladies competition was more clear cut as Glynis Conroy and Cherrie Phillips had a 5 shot cushion in winning the Colleen Flynn & Dale Matthews 18 hole 4 Ball Best Ball Stableford event.

Despite bitterly cold westerly winds a field of 18 golfers contested Cunningham’s IGA Scratch Shootout on Sunday.
At the conclusion of 17 holes it came down to a battle between two of the field’s outsiders as Joey Van Opynen and Mark Kelly went up the 18th hole in an effort to reign. Kelly’s tee shot missed the fairway and left him with a difficult shot over the trees from the edge of the 10th fairway, while Van Opynen was well placed despite a bad lie on the right side of the 18th fairway. Kelly played a magnificent wedge to pin high on the right side of the green but with a daunting 8 metre putt. Van Opynen gutted his second shot through the green and played a delicate chip within 50cm of the pin to guarantee a par.

Kelly’s attempt at a birdie came agonisingly close as it shaved the hole and came to rest 15cm past the hole thus ensuring both players would rely on the sudden death chip off to decide the outcome. Kelly played first and failed to reach the green. This took the pressure off Van Opynen and he hit a magnificent chip shot to 30cm to take the title.

The Parkes Pennants team is playing the quarter finals of the Western Districts Ladies Golf Associations Pennants today against a strong Mudgee club at Wellington. Tomorrow members will contest an 18 hole Stableford for Peter Dixon, John Green and Mark Kelly’s trophies in an event with a twist as it will be played under the Joker’s Rules.

The Joker’s Rules state each player has three Jokers and one Triple Joker during the 18 hole competition, however before a player can use a Joker they must nominate prior to hitting off on a hole if they intend to use a Joker. If a player decides to use a Joker the points they score on that particular hole are doubled and on a Triple Joker hole the score is tripled. The player who records the day’s highest score is the winner. The Ladies will also play the Jokers rules during their 18 Hole Stableford event.

On Sunday the re-scheduled 2016 Mixed Foursomes Championships over 27 holes will be from 10:00am, sponsored by Liz Matthews.

Proud Tradition Over 30 Years

McPstaff

McPhersons Parts & Service will be celebrating its 30th anniversary by saying thank you to staff and customers.
“It makes me extremely proud to be able to keep the doors open of the business my father and his partners started to service our local farmers,” said David Thompson, Dealer Principle.

David bought the business in February 2016 from his father, Barry Thompson, and Tony Latter. “This means we are still a locally owned business, as well as the only locally owned farming machinery business in Parkes,” said David. He was one of the first two apprentices, with Steve Blaxland, at McPhersons. “I still really enjoy coming to work every day.”

According to David the chief aim of McPhersons has always been to employ local people and provide them with continuous training needed to maintain the best service to its many clients. “We have always looked to employ local people and have had more than 30 apprentices over 30 years. This means we have a lot of local knowledge. We have a combined total of 147 years of experience for our staff complement of 17 at the moment.”

David said they had developed a great relationship with their loyal customers over the years.

There are also some fun activities to enter for the kids in the Arts and Craft, Needlework and Cooking sections.”

Show tickets can be bought at Cunninghams IGA and Byrne Clothing, and of course the Show Office. Tickets purchased before the Show give you unlimited entry over the three days for just $5 for “schoolies” (anyone attending school), $15 for adults, and kids not yet attending school are free. This is an amazing deal as each entry ticket once the show starts is $15 per entry! Buy your tickets before the show and go into the draw to win one of the $500 open orders from our participating stores. Please note that concession tickets ($10) are only available from the Show Office.

“The Show Committee is working hard to ensure the Showground is in perfect order. NorthParkes Mines have been one of our major show sponsors for many years. Each year they also send a large team of workers to help clean up the showground, which is greatly appreciated,” said Garry. “McPhersons Parts and Service New Holland is our new 2016 major sponsor.

McPhersons is celebrating 30 years of servicing our community – it is great to see we have community minded, pro active businesses like NorthParkes, McPhersons and others that are willing to help make our annual Show a success.”

Bull Sale

July 28, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The McLachlan Group will be holding its annual bull sale on North Logan Road in Cowra on 10th August at 1pm.
The sale will be the business’ fifth annual sale, and McLachlan Group’s Warren Miller expects it to be popular. The sale will have 35 Angus, 20 Charolais and two Polhereford bulls. Angus bulls are the most popular for beef, and Warren said these should sell fast.

All the bulls are grass fed, meaning they live longer, and produce better quality beef. “Our bulls are of the highest quality, which means our buyers get the best grass fed beef they can,” said Warren The past four annual sales have been hugely popular with bulls selling for about $4,000 each.

Grass has grown very lush after good rains  and has lead to very good cattle sales across the region.

Parkes Public Jumps Into Education Actvities

Parkes Public School hops into Education Week today with the annual Jump Rope for Heart event for K-2. Parkes Public is the only school to have been taking part every year since the inception of the event in 1983. Families are invited to attend the fun filled session and stay on for a picnic lunch.

This year the school will be educating parents too with two maths workshops planned to provide strategies for parents to help their kids with homework. Primary parents will get their maths lesson on Monday at 5:30pm, while Infants parents have their turn next Friday at 2:00pm.

The annual open classrooms event is on Wednesday at 12:00pm with a picnic lunch for students and families at 1:15pm, followed by a whole school assembly at 2:00pm. A book fair held at the school last week was wonderfully supported by students and parents with nearly $4, 000 raised, and more than 70 families donating a book to the library. The book fair kicked off with a dress up day with the teachers turning up as Where’s Wally’s and Wanda’s.

Parkes Public also had to say farewell to Principal, Leanne Breaden last week. After 28 years at the school and principal for the past ten years, she is moving on to become Co-ordinator of the NDIS in the State Office in Sydney.
“We wish Mrs Breaden all the best as she begins her new role,” said Ben Smith, relieving principal.
