The winner of the Parkes Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest competed in Memphis, USA last week for a chance to be crowned the world’s best Elvis tribute artist. Brendon Chase represented the Parkes Elvis Festival in the semi-final round at Elvis Week, but unfortunately did not make it to the final round.
The Parkes Chamber of Commerce has extended the deadline for nominations for the Henrys to Wednesday, 30 August. Over 40 nominations in nine categories have been received so far. “It is exciting to see that our Start-Up Superstar (Best Business under two years) has attracted much interest, and the category of Young Entrepreneur (18-35 year old) is hotly contended with already five nominations received,” said Belinda McCorkell of the Chamber.

Teachers, parents and students of Parkes Christian School undertook a missionary trip to Fiji in April. One of the aims of the trip was to provide school supplies to teachers and students. Parkes Stationery and Office Supplies was asked to help with the provision of school supplies. Marty and Gregor Sammut-Paul, owners of Parkes Stationery reached out to their suppliers and were overwhelmed by their generosity. More than two pallets were donated including notebooks, writing instruments and general stationery.
Due to the amount donated, Parkes Stationery will also donate supplies to the Uniting Church of Parkes for their mission to East Timor later this year. “We have such strong relationships with our suppliers, and were very pleased they could contribute such a high volume of goods to benefit more than one worthy cause,” said Marty.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of disability and decreased mobility in older people. It can also occur in younger or middle-aged people, mostly those who have injured their joint earlier in life.
It mostly affects the articular cartilage (the cartilage covering the ends of the bones) of a joint. The cause of osteoarthritis has often been attributed to “wear and tear” but this can be misleading. Joint cartilage actually requires regular movement to remain healthy. In healthy joints, there is a balance between degeneration and regeneration of the articular cartilage. When degeneration exceeds regeneration, the cartilage thins and may even crack causing the bones to rub together. Cartilage, however, needs some load to regenerate. Healthy loads need to be applied to joints for cartilage recovery.
In the more advanced stages of osteoarthritis the articular cartilage disappears and the two bone surfaces begin to touch. This causes pain, swelling and increased heat in the joint due to inflammation. Trying to protect itself, the body produces more bone at the joint edges and osteophytes (jagged bits of bone) form. As the soft tissues around the joint, including ligaments and muscles, become affected the joints become looser and the muscles tighten to
compensate. This leads to even more pain and often joint deformity.
Currently there is no proven way of curing cartilage loss. Treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms and improving function of the joint. Regular movement and strengthening the muscles around the joint helps to reduce joint laxity and keep the remaining cartilage healthy. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces the load on weight bearing joints therefore decreasing the rate of cartilage breakdown.

The decision by the regional electricity distributor Essential Energy to close two depots at Peak Hill and Trundle from 4th September has not been welcomed by the Parkes Shire and Electrical Trades Union (ETU). The decision by Essential Energy is part of an ongoing series of cuts to employee numbers and regional depots.
Mayor of Parkes Cr Ken Keith said: “Vital services like the ones Essential Energy provide, are critical to the sustainability of smaller communities. These communities deserve and expect the same level of service that people receive in larger metropolitan and regional centres. Whilst Essential Energy has stated that these employees will not be losing their jobs, the communities of Peak Hill and Trundle will receive reduced services with increasing waiting times to receive emergency after hours services”.
The ETU also pointed out that the reduced services would result in slower emergency response times. “At the moment, when a car hits a telegraph pole, wind brings down power lines, or a house catches fire, local crews are available at Trundle and Peak Hill to respond, including after hours,” ETU assistant secretary Justin Page said.
“From next month, emergency services will be forced to wait for up to an hour for power to be isolated. “This delayed response not only impacts on the ability of emergency services, it puts the safety of the public at risk and services will take longer to restore.” The Mayor said he had been contacted by local community members who were concerned about the flow on effect the removal of these jobs might have on their communities.
“Council calls on Essential Energy to review this decision,” the Mayor said. “As Essential Energy is a government owned corporation, Council will be making submissions to the Minister for Energy and Utilities, Essential Energy and the Local Member for Orange.”

70 Bulls, Cows And Calves At Coota Park Sale
The Coota Park Blue-E 2017 annual on-property production sale will be held on Tuesday, 5th September at 2pm at Woodstock, near Cowra. On offer this year are 50 bulls and 20 cows and calves. Coota Park Blue-E cattle are known for their hybrid vigour, efficient conversion of grass to meat, low methane and growth yield marbling efficiency.
Blue-E’s are a line of Angus x Shorthorn cattle that have been developed by Jon, Harvey and Barbara Wright of Coota Park, Woodstock, NSW.
The Blue-E concept was initially conceived by Jon after many years working as cattle manager at the Trangie Research Centre in NSW. The research considered the value of feed conversion to the beef industry. After seeing first-hand the enormous value in selecting for feed conversion, Jon returned to Coota Park and initiated the Blue-E cattle and built their own efficiency testing facility on farm.
