Parkes Show – WIN A DRONE AT FARMER DAY WEDNESDAY!

August 25, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Drone technology will take centre stage at Farmer Day Wednesday at this year’s Parkes Show next week. Some leading drone experts, suppliers, manufacturers and service providers will showcase the newest tools available to farmers and drone enthusiasts. Ben Watts, a sheep producer from Molong, will outline what is achievable with drones and how to control, maintain and repair your craft. Falcon UAV is a specialist aerial imaging company focusing entirely on the agriculture industry. They scan crops and determine levels of stress weeks before they are visible to the human eye.

Leading Edge Electronics will showcase all the models and touch on some exciting game changing tools in the production pipeline. One lucky visitor will walk away with a DJI Phantom 3 thanks to Leading Edge Electronics and the Parkes Show. Don’t forget the day starts with a breakfast before the feature drone sessions commence at 10am. There are also sessions on lice management, compost and humus products, a showcase of the very latest agricultural machinery releases and a BBQ lunch. Come and see first hand what the Parkes Show has to offer.

Op Shop Till You Drop

August 25, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Vinnies

Locals are encouraged to bag a bargain at one of our wonderful Op Shops in Parkes to celebrate National Op Shop Week. The initiative celebrates the contributions these stores make to local communities, and raises awareness of the importance of supporting your local ‘oppy’. Neville Barrett, the General Manager of Salvos Stores Australian Eastern Territory, emphasised that despite the stores being part of national organisations, all funds raised from sales stay in the community and support local residents. Items are also distributed to people in need due to a personal crisis or emergency.

Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis as the 2016 Op Shop week Ambassador, encourages people to visit op shops and “reduce the costa living”. But op shopping isn’t just about being thrifty, it is also good for the environment. According to Neville around 50,000 tonnes are diverted from going to landfills each year. “If every Australian bought second hand it would also save billions of litres of water each year,” he said. “The fashion industry is a very thirsty business.” Op Shops also provide important social benefits. The Anglicare Shop staff agree that the best thing about volunteering is being able to provide fellowship to others.

Chris Symonds started working in the Salvos Store 12 months ago and says that it’s a great way to gain new skills. Kim Whiteman decided to help others following an inspirational letter from her grandfather, and has always been drawn to family stores. But you don’t have to volunteer to help. Donate your good quality second-hand items to a local charity and help them help others.

Wear a daffodil pin to show support for someone you know. Today is Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day, a national day of hope and an opportunity for people across the region to contribute to a brighter, cancer-free future. More than 650 sites will be in full swing across NSW, staffed by more than 5,000 volunteers, including over 100 sites in Western NSW to encourage people to buy merchandise to show support for someone they know. In addition to Daffodil Day merchandise sites, NAB branches in Parkes and Forbes will be hosting morning teas with all proceeds going to Daffodil Day.

This year marks 30 years of Daffodil Day in Australia. As the largest national fundraising event in the southern hemisphere, this year Cancer Council hopes to raise $2.6m in NSW and $6.7m nationally. Since its inception, Daffodil Day has raised over $133m for life-saving cancer research, support services and prevention programs. “By buying and wearing a pin, locals can continue contributing to life-saving cancer research, advocacy, prevention programs and support services,” Brianna Carracher, Daffodil Day Coordinator, Cancer Council Western Region said.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, with one in two Australians predicted to be diagnosed by age 85. Get out there, wear a pin, and give some fresh daffodils to someone you know,” Brianna said. To find out where you can purchase a pin, please visit https://www.daffodilday.com.au/get-involved/where-to-buy/ or call

First On-Farm Sale For Shorthorn Central

August 25, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Shorthorn Central will be holding its first ever on-farm shorthorn bull sale on Thursday, 8th September at Chindwarra 381 Thurungle Road, Forbes. Shorthorn Central Bull breeder Trent Johnstone said having the sale on the farm would benefit buyers more than having it at the livestock exchange. “I think we will have a better atmosphere by selling our bulls straight from the farm, and buyers will be able to view the bulls in their own comfort zone,” he said.

“It saves us the time to transport all of the bulls from the farm to the exchange, and it allows buyers to see where and how the bulls have been bred. This can be important as well.” Forty bulls from six different vendors will be auctioned at the sale, which starts at 1pm on the day. Trent said he expected prices per kilogram to remain above average as it has been to date.

All Shorthorn Central bulls are grass fed. “These bulls are commercially orientated, easy going and they have the ability to fatten and marble off grass,” he said. “Our bulls are very balanced, they have high carcass and maternal profitability and all bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Pesti ,Vibrio and are semen tested, ready to go to work.”

This year has been a very exciting time to be involved in the shorthorn breed and their crosses. With the launch of the JBS Thousand Guineas branded beef product, all breeders of shorthorns and crosses (75% minimum) are afforded a premium over all other breeds and now on parity with Angus. An invitation is extended to all attending the sale to partake in a Thousand Guineas Steak sandwich courtesy of one of the sales major sponsors, ANZ Bank. For all enquiries call Trent Johnstone on 0438 522 198.

Historical Aircraft in Parkes: Parkes residents have the opportunity to see an historical Convair aircraft at the Parkes Aviation Museum from 10am to 12pm this Sunday. The Convair 440 Metropolitan Airliner in Trans Australian Airlines livery is on a delivery flight from South Africa to it’s new home at Illawarra Regional Airport. Another new and interesting exhibit at the museum is a Vietnam era ex RAAF Caribou that is open for inspection. Visits to the museum are by gold coin donation.

Census back online: Parkes Shire residents who were unable to complete their online Census last week can now do so with the 2016 Census website back online. Last week thousands of Australians logged on to complete their Census causing a hardware failure when a router became overloaded. At the time of these events, more than two million forms had already been successfully submitted and safely stored. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) assures residents that no data was lost during the outage. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager, Kent Boyd encourages residents to persist in their attempts to complete their Census. “Data collected from the 2016 Census is extremely important for the work we do at Parkes Shire Council. The data is used to support funding decisions for services and infrastructure across the Parkes Shire including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment.” Alternatively, Parkes Shire residents may request a paper version of the Census by calling 1300 820 275. No fines will be imposed for completing the Census after August 9, however it must be done by 23rd September 2016.

Parkes Chamber of Commerce: Parkes Chamber members were invited to meet with Small Business Minister and Federal member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, recently and given the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns. There is a renewed focus on improving the atmosphere and enhancing the Parkes Upmarkets for visitors and stallholders alike. Anyone interested in joining the organising committee should get in contact with Geoff Rice or email chamber@parkeschamber.com.au

The Sparkles Promotion will be back in 2016. Information regarding this year’s promotion will be available shortly. The Christmas Upmarkets and Movie Night will be held in conjunction with the Street Parade to be organised by the Action Club. The Parkes Chamber of Commerce (PCC) AGM will be held on 14th September at 7pm at the Parkes Services Club. The review to the Constitution will be presented for ratification.

Questions were asked of Councillor Alan Ward regarding the local content portion of PSC Project tenders. It is important to ensure Parkes businesses particularly and other local businesses have the best chance at any possible opportunities. PCC will support a young women’s networking/mentor group to be organised by Suzie Hill.
