Men’s Shed working for the birds: The Parkes Men’s Shed have been making several hundred bird nesting boxes for mining companies in the region and the Roads and Maritime Services over the past couple of years. They currently have a contract to build sugar glider nesting boxes, which is keeping a group of the men busy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. While this work is going on there is always a group of men sitting at the table of knowledge discussing the problems of the world. There are also members who use the vast selection of tools to make toys for their grandchildren or to restore furniture. Morning tea at 10:00am is an important time in the shed when all work stops for half an hour and the men enjoy tea, coffee and nibbles. For $15 membership per year, this is a golden opportunity to enjoy a chat and make use of all the available equipment to be creative.

Help Kris walk 35km: On 4 September Kris Kent, Spinifex Regional Manager, is taking on a 35km Bloody Long Walk challenge from Palm Beach to Manly in Sydney for the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (AMDF). “I am taking on this challenge to raise money to help find a cure for mito – a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death,” said Kris. One Australian child born each week will develop a severe or life-threatening form of mitochondrial disease. Kris aims to raise $100 for every kilometer walk to raise a total of $3 500 and gives a shout out to businesses to support her. Please follow the link below to make a donation on her fundraising page: https://blw-sydney-north2016.everydayhero.com/au/kristie All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be sent a receipt after you make your donation.

New Tourism Destination Networks in NSW: Six new Destination Networks have been created throughout NSW. The Parkes Shire will now form part of the Country and Outback NSW network. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres said the new networks would work closely with local government, tourism organisations and operators, as well as collaborate on campaigns with Destination NSW. Tourism produces $58 million gross regional product per year, with the tourism and hospitality industry employing around 6% of the Parkes Shire workforce.

Small Business Minister meets Parkes Chamber: The new Minister for Small Business and the Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, met with members of the Parkes Chamber of Commerce last week. From the left are Alice Milne (Pink Orchid Florist), Geoff Rice (Langlands Hanlon), Michael McCormack and Suzanne Hill (Parkes Diagnostic Imaging).

20 Years Of Service In The Central West

August 11, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

IMG_6512

This year Leading Edge Computers Parkes (LECP) celebrates 20 years in business, servicing the Central West and beyond. In July 1996, Greg and Marisa Liebich started Parkes Computer Scene. It was a small shop in Clarinda Street, selling computers and servicing businesses. After a year of being independent, they decided to join the Leading Edge group as one of the first members of Leading Edge Computers. Today the group has more than 130 independently owned stores nation wide.

The group provided a space where Greg and Marisa could share their ideas and pull from the wealth of support that the group offered. In May 2003, the store could no longer fit in their small shopfront, and they decided to relocate across the road into a larger premises. With a new workshop, the team grew and the business flourished.

In November 2006, Greg tragically died in a light aeroplane accident. This was a difficult chapter in the life of LECP, however the team rallied with the support of the local community. The business continued, with Marisa taking up the role of sole owner and becoming the face of LECP. Today she is supported by Luke Williams, John England and Jason Murchie.

As Greg had always been a proactive member of the Leading Edge Group, and following his loss, an award was named after him. The Local Hero Award celebrates the group member that has been voted most willing to lend a hand to the rest. The award is presented after a vote from all the stores as to who they best think fits this role, and is presented at the yearly Leading Edge Computers conference.

With the combined total of over 50 years of experience in the industry, the Parkes team is always striving to be on the Leading Edge of technology and provide the right solution for our customers.

Times have changed in the last 20 years, and technology has changed dramatically. Twenty years ago the internet was still only being introduced to the world through dialup at a speed of 56kbit/second. Since then we’ve watched it grow into ISDN, ADSL, ADSL2, 3G, 4G, and now Leading Edge Computers have partnered with a local Internet company, BitWave Networks to provide high speed fixed wireless broadband to households and businesses all around Parkes. This network has speeds up to 100Mbit/second, which is nearly 2, 000 times faster than the older dial up network.

Another development is our new managed services allowing us to remotely manage sites via the internet. From powering on a server, to installing a program, it can now all happen remotely without even leaving the shop. Twenty years ago, Intel had just released their new processor: The Intel Pentium Processor, which had a 200MHz single core. These days we have the new core processor range with the newest i7 processor featuring 10 cores and 20 threads that can all run at 3.5GHz, which is around 350 times faster.

Laptops have gone from being expensive and heavy, to sleek, lightweight and powerful. Where in 1996 laptops were few and far between, these days they rival the desktop in power and price and far out sell the bigger desktop personal computers (PCs). Times have changed, but Leading Edge Computers Parkes always strives to be the leader in new technology. We are always there to provide the latest advice on all that is new to the market, and can quote on anything that your home or business needs. The last 20 years have had many highlights for the team at Leading Edge Computers.
• In 2003, the shop was able to move out of their smaller premises, and buy the shopfront where the shop is now.
• In 2011, through meeting sales and service goals with our suppliers, the store was awarded a brand new car.
• Through our new partnership with BitWave Networks, we are now able to provide highspeed fixed wireless broadband to businesses and homes in Parkes, Forbes and surrounds.

• Always being on the cutting edge of new technology, and providing solutions to any home or business system.

Leading Edge Computers Parkes would like to thank the community for getting us to where we are today. Without the support of the Parkes, Forbes and surrounding communities, LECP would not be where we are today. And to the support team at the Leading Edge Group and all of our suppliers, who have created a community in the group that is always ready to lend a hand with information on new technology, support queries, and just about anything that you need to know to run a store.

Here’s to the last 20 years, and many more to come!

A Message from Parkes Shire Council…

August 11, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

council

Council has taken advantage of the break in wet weather this week getting our crews out-and-about for maintenance and repairs on our roads. Council thanks the community for reporting damage caused by recent rains. Parkes Shire Council encourages local businesses to apply for an exciting opportunity to develop and expand their online presence. The Building Business Capacity (BBC) Program will offer advice to utilise e-commerce and digital marketing. Make sure to attend one of four free workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions to be conducted by local consultants JPA Business and Adloyalty.

Over 20 people attended the two councillor information sessions to learn more about local government. The Returning Officer received a healthy number of nominations, which bodes well for a quality field of candidates for the 2016 Local Government Election on Saturday, 10th September.

Today Parkes’ students are painting the town Flame REaD! Commencing in Cooke Park with an opening ceremony and arrival of the Book Relay, the day celebrates reading in all shapes and sizes. Children will participate in reading activities, verse speaking, baby competition, rhyme hunt and games along Clarinda Street. Parkes Shire residents are encouraged to get behind our local Olympians in Rio.

Hopes of a medal have slightly dwindled for our local Hockeyroo, Mariah Williams, with the Australian women’s hockey side going down against Great Britain and the USA this week. Scott Westcott’s Olympic campaign only kicks off on 21st August, as the men’s marathon is one of the final events of the Games. We wish both Mariah and Scott all the best in their individual pursuits.

Enjoy your weekend.

Re-Awaken Your Sense Of Wonder…

August 11, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Each year in September, Parkes Shire Library celebrates literacy, science, art and creative play, by dedicating the month to exploring Curiosity + Wonder! “We are known in Parkes for our engaging interactive programs, cultural events and variety of workshops offered,” said Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Shellie Buckle. “The Library Team and I have drawn upon the community’s enjoyment of meeting authors and excellent response to art workshops when arranging the first Curiosity + Wonder events,” she said.

The celebration kicks off with two exciting events: a visit from a best-selling Australian author and a weaving workshop from a well-known Central West artist. Karen Viggers is the award-winning internationally best-selling author of three novels: The Stranding, The Lightkeeper’s Wife and The Grass Castle. She writes contemporary fiction set in wild Australian landscapes, and her work explores connection with the bush, grief and loss, healing in nature, death, family, marriage and friendship.

Karen is a wildlife veterinarian who has worked and travelled in many remote parts of Australia, from Antarctica to the Kimberley. Her novels are known for their evocative portrayal of Australian people and landscapes.

Karen is joining the Parkes community for lunch at Parkes Library on Tuesday, 6th September. Her talk is titled “Finding Stories in Australian Landscapes”. Weaving artist Lanny Mackenzie from Orange, enjoys using naturally sourced and recycled materials for her works. Lanny started weaving in 2002 in Condobolin and found it quite therapeutic, cathartic and a great artistic outlet.

Lanny often travels around the central west of New South Wales to pass her skills on to others, and will be at Parkes Library on Sunday, 4th September holding a weaving workshop. Bookings are required for the weaving workshop as there are limited places, and to ensure there are enough sandwiches for lunch the Library team would like to know if you are coming to the author talk. Call Parkes Library on 6861 2309 or email library@parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Three students received scholarships from Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania (SMMO) last week. Mihran Sarkissian, Peter Lindsay and Eloise Clayton were awarded the scholarships, which are supported and administered by Northparkes Mines.

SMMO Managing Director, Hitoshi Ito, said: “Sumitomo has been a partner of Northparkes since its very beginning in 1993. We have provided SMMO scholarships to students for the past three years to demonstrate our commitment to Northparkes and our wish to work with the local community for many years to come.” Northparkes Managing Director Stefanie Loader said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity via SMMO to support local students pursue a career in mining.”

Eloise attended Trundle Central School and is now studying a Bachelor of Science at Western Sydney University. Eloise is excited about the possibility of a work placement at Northparkes, and would like to return to the region when she completes her studies. Mihran and Peter are both Year 11 Students at Red Bend Catholic College. The Children’s Author And The Geocache

August 11, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Susie Sarah group photo

Children’s author Susie Sarah visited Bogan Gate Public School at the end of July to conduct a two-day workshop. Students travelled from Tullamore Central School to join in for the first day. Everybody worked together with Susie to explore the process of character development and to gain insight into how authors gather inspiration.

Students made friendship murals, brainstormed ideas, wrote poetry and had a great day of learning and writing together. The Bogan Gate students enjoyed working with students from other schools. On Susie’s second day Bogan Gate students learned about geocaching. Afterwards students had the opportunity to create the school’s very own geocache, setting the teacher the task of being the first to find it!

If you would like to find Bogan Gate Public School’s geocache, the instructions are on the school website at www.bogangate-p.schools.nsw.edu.au. Geochaching is like creating your own Pokemon Go game. It is a treasure hunt with something for everyone. You use map coordinates and a GPS enabled device to find a geocache near your home, in the city, in the bush or even in Antarctica. Geochaches come in all shapes and sizes and some might even have exciting treasures inside.

Susie Sarah is the author of children’s books like Playing Possum, Mother McGinty’s Goat, Emily Emu Chick, The Big Green Tractor, Jumping Jack Jones, Snug Cove Sam, Bob the Bakery Cat, and Wilberforce the Wombat.

The Green Army Files Into Parkes

August 4, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Green Army Team 2016

The Green Army has come to Parkes and will be here for the next 20 weeks. Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) succeeded in Round 4 of the Green Army Programme and managed to secure three consecutive teams for the Parkes area. The teams consist of six participants between the ages of 17 and 24 years, overseen by Guy Bennett as the team supervisor.

The teams will be working on projects to maintain and improve biodiversity with the focus on increasing the biodiversity and connecting Box Gum Grassy Woodlands and Weeping Myall Woodlands. These woodlands are listed as Endangered Ecological Communities. “We are fortunate to have seasonal conditions that are conducive to planting,” said Project Officer for CWLL, Marg Applebee.

“CWLL are looking forward to working with the Parkes and Forbes Council’s on projects that will benefit our communities and provide a cleaner and greener area for us to live in.” Marg said the group would not just be planting trees, but they would also be learning to identify, collect and grow local seed. “They will be learning how to work as a team and gain experience that will provide a platform to future work opportunities when they leave the programme.”

Marg is asking local landholders, who have projects that they think the Green Army could contribute to, to contact her on 6862 4914.

The Green Army is a hands-on, practical environmental action programme for young Australians who are interested in protecting their local environment.

Meals on Wheels have moved: The Meals on Wheels office relocated last week from Neighbourhood Central to 78 Clarinda Street. Some people will know this as the old lolly shop. Fiona Graham, service manager, said the new venue had a lot more space and easy parking off the lane at the back. “We will be able to host morning teas and other events now,” said Fiona. She thanked Rotary for helping with the move, and CanAssist for helping to deliver the furniture. “Everyone is welcome to pop in and have a look around!” The grand opening of the new office takes place today at 10:30am.

Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy: Let your imagination run wild in a series of free art workshops, Journey into Mystery, to be held at Parkes Library and run by Maralyn Nash. The workshops will cover all genres of horror, science fiction and fantasy art from painting dragons, zombies, monsters and superheroes to cyberpunk characters and other imagery. The workshops will run on Tuesdays from 4 – 7pm on 23 August; 6, 13, 20, 27 September and 4 October at the Parkes Library. Places are limited to 12 participants aged 12 +. During the workshops six completed artworks will be created that will be exhibited on the community wall public art mural in Parkes. Topics covered will include graphic design illustration, photomontage, air bushing and surrealist fantasy style painting techniques. The workshops are the first events being held for the Library’s Curiosity + Wonder Festival to celebrate literacy. No previous experience is necessary as full instruction will be given and all art materials supplied. Bookings are required. Please call Parkes Library on 6861 2309.

Parkes Shire moves online for Census 2016: Residents of the Parkes Shire are encouraged to join millions of people across Australia to participate in the country’s largest and most significant online event. The 17th national Census of Population and Housing will move online for the first time, making it easier for people in regional and remote areas to be counted. It is expect 16 million people will complete the survey online. The ABS has delivered 10 million letters to every household around the country in preparation for Census night. Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith said: “The 2016 Census will provide the Parkes community an opportunity to make a difference”.
He emphasised the importance of Census data in enabling Council to gain a better impression of what the community needed, and would support funding decisions services and infrastructure including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment “. For more information visit www.abs.gov.au.

Safety at Children’s Crossings: During recent school zone observations it has been identified that there is confusion about how ‘Children’s Crossings’ operates. The Council has started a new initiative with all schools in the shire with a Children’s Crossing near their grounds to set out the roles and responsibilities of both the Council and schools. There are five crossings in Parkes, two in Trundle and one in Tullamore. “Children’s Crossings are legally the strongest marked pedestrian crossing for managing traffic and road safety in local streets around schools. During the school-zone operating hours they are an inflexible traffic regulation which allows drivers no other option but to stop,” said Logan Dolbel, Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer. As Children’s Crossings are marked by bright orange flags, Council has agreed to supply new flags to each school every two years, to develop and implement local education campaigns regarding children’s crossings, and provide educational material to the school principals for distribution amongst parents and students. For further information contact Logan Dolbel on 6861 2364.
