Have you had your COVID vaccine yet and why did you decide to get it?

August 13, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Eileen Newport: I’ve had my first one and had no side effects. The next one is due on the 19th of October. I thought about it for a long time before I went for the first jab. I decided it was the right thing to do for everyone’s sake.

Rosemary Prior: I’ve had my first shot and only had a sore arm. The second one is due at the end of the month. As we enjoy travelling in our caravan, my husband and I both decided it was the right thing to do for safety’s sake. I’m encouraging all my family to do the same thing as this virus is not going to go away any time soon. It is very important to get the vaccine.

What do you like about trees?

August 6, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Rachel, Jacob and Ryan Swindle: Trees make oxygen for us to breathe, and they create habitats for animals. We like the old trees at the farm as they give us shaded shelter.

Narelle Phizarro: The fact that a tiny seed can create an amazing future!

Amy, Sophie and Hamish McGrath: Trees give us oxygen and provide habitats for animals.

Which Olympic sports do you enjoy watching at the moment?

July 30, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Ben Lam: I’ve done sport all my life so I enjoy the swimming, soccer and weight lifting. It is also great to see the water polo as you don’t get to see much of it outside of the Olympics.

George Pratt: I enjoy the shooting, but unfortunately they don’t show very much of it.

Hedley Nicholson AOM: I watch the tennis (Helen will kill me if I don’t…!), hockey and also equestrian as I used to have horses.

Why do you play bowls?

July 23, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Maureen Miller – President of Parkes Women’s Bowling Club: I started playing five years ago when I retired. I enjoy the game, as well as the social side of it – we are a great bunch of women. We also have some great competitions we take part in and play against other towns, so it is not just Tuesday mornings.

Joan Simpson: I’ve been a member of the Parkes Bowls Club for 54 years making me the longest playing member. I’m a patron as well. I enjoy playing and the companionship is lovely here. You meet so many new people.

Julie Green: I’ve been playing a couple of years and find it a lovely, friendly and happy group of ladies – it is a pleasure to be with them. I would thoroughly recommend any ladies and gentlemen to come and play and have a great time.

Who had the best time at the NAIDOC Week celebrations on Saturday?

July 16, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Beau and Tyler Hando thought the hot chips were the best.

Four-year-old Ellie and Andie Fitzpatrick, who caught the eye with their colourful outfits, enjoyed their lollies.

Neveah Pritchard and Harmony Dowling came on their bicycles and enjoyed their sausage sandwiches while waiting in the face painting line.

Do you have a favourite animal at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo?

July 9, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Enter our competition below to stand a chance to win a family pass to the zoo to see Sabi and all the other amazing animals.

Meerkats are very popular and look cute and cuddly, but they are capable of killing a cobra! The meerkat troupe attracts a lot of fans.

This is Sabi, a critically endangered black rhino calf, born in February at the Dubbo Zoo. With only around 6,000 black rhinos left in the wild, Sabi’s birth this year is a big part of the effort to protect the animal.

Each zebra has a unique pattern of stripes, as individual as a human’s fingerprint. At Taronga you can study their stripes from up close.

What is your favourite activity during school holidays?

July 2, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Hayden Hodge: I enjoy being outside and getting some fresh air when I go riding my scooter with my friends.

Mitchell Davies: Spending time with my friends and riding our scooters around town.

Nicolas McMaugh: Hanging out with my friends and riding our scooters all over town. I do a bit of gaming too.

What did you think of the Sustainability Workshop?

June 18, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Nicholas Glasson (16): It was great! The information was very good and will impact how I think in future. I am sure to buy more second-hand clothing from now on.

Deb Jones: It was a great event and I have decided to commit again to Plastic Free July, eating less red meat and more plant-based food. It also got me thinking about the next level up from recycling, which is refusing to buy new items.

Marg Jones, Bill Jayet and Sharon Fhipps:
Sharon: The presentations were outstanding and has given us hope and actions to consider. It is wonderful to have such educated and proactive young people in our community. I am definitely going to plant these trees.

Why did you want to enter the Waste 2 Art competition?

June 4, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Kelsey (9) and Alana (12) Finnegan:
Alana: I entered previously and won a prize. I also like to re-use items. It is a lot of fun deciding what to use. I looked around my room for inspiration and saw my piggy bank and decided to make one using old drink cans and tins.
Kelsey: I was inspired by Alana to enter. I like doing art, and as we do a lot of recycling at home, it was easy to do it.

Amarni Reidy (9): I wanted to do it to see what it’s like as I enjoy making art. I was inspired by a book I read about rainbows, water and nature. I saw a rainbow on the front cover and started making one, and then continued making other things found in nature and the garden.

Why did you join the School Strike 4 Climate protest in Cooke Park?

May 28, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Alexander Priest: Oscar Hendry is my best friend and I want to help him to save the world’s future.

Clayton Wing Yip, Elizabeth Drewes, Vienna Farrell, Marty Davis and Arial Johnson: We are concerned about climate change, and it is great to have this event in Parkes. We wanted to participate to help raise awareness. It was empowering to be here today as we now know how we can get involved and help. It also created a better sense of community and it was great to see the Mayor and some Councillors also care about the environment.

Jeanette Lane and Julie Layton: Julie: I absolutely believe we have to do something. It is important to invest in our collective voice for change. Jeanette: We need to stop the investments in gas fired plants. It was also great for kids to see other kids take action.
