Winding Up The Soccer Season

October 15, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Action from one of the under 8 games – Falcons vs Emus – played at Harrison Park last year.

With the 2021 season coming to an unfortunate early finish due to COVID lockdowns, the Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association committee has been working hard behind the scenes finding ways to wind up the season.

The Policies and Procedures Meeting will be held on Monday, 18th October at 6:30pm at Parkes Bowling & Sports Club. Any application to change current by-laws must be received via email to pdasasecretary@outlook.com.au by 6pm Friday, 15th October. All Open Ladies teams from the 2021 season need to have a representative in attendance.

The Junior Presentation will be held on Saturday, 30th October 1pm at Harrison Park. COVID rules and regulations will still apply with QR check in and social distancing enforced. All participants in our non-competitive junior teams will receive an individual award with a team photo taken. Presentation times for each group are: 1pm – Under 6; 1:30pm – Under 8; 2pm – Under 10.

In the competitive age groups only premiers and runner-up trophies will be presented with the individual best and fairest awards. The following teams will receive trophies from 2:30pm: Under 12 Premiers: Strikers; Under 12 Runners-Up: Victory; Open Juniors Premiers: Rangers; Open Juniors Runners-Up: Wolves

No presentation will be held in both divisions of our Open Ladies Competitions with teams instead receiving awards at the compulsory Policies and Procedures meeting. The teams are: 1st Division Premiers: Cougars; 1st Division Runners-Up: Commercial Kookaburras; 2nd Division Premiers: Forbes Power; 2nd Division Runners-Up: Railway Bowling Club.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, 8th November at 6pm at Parkes Bowling & Sports Club. All positions on the committee will be declared vacant. Anyone interested in volunteering to join the committee should attend the AGM or email pdasacommittee@outlook.com.au.

Magic At Work On Bowling Rink

October 8, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

A fantastic number of 33 players came along on Tuesday! The magic was certainly working for the two winning teams of the Club Fours semi-finals.

Chris Cox (sub), Laurie Keane, Eileen Bradley and Carol Reed combined beautifully to take their match, 20 – 17, over Di Howell, Valmai Westcott, Lea Orr and Robyn Morgan.

Likewise, Marja Iffland, Maria Willcockson, Gwenda Carty and Cherie Frame took the lead early and won 20 – 15 against the combination of Brenda Davies, Betsy Johnstone, Liz Byrne and Rhona Went.

In social games, the pairs enjoyed a close tussle, with Lynn Ryan and Helen Heraghty winning by just one point against Vi West and Chris Curteis.

In a triples game, Anne Wright and Isobel Svensden shared the lead spot, and with Jan McPhee and Elaine Miller, they were too good for Kim Evans, Merilyn Rodgers and Maureen Baillie.

Another very close result when Beth Thomas, Fran Dixon and Heather Harvey went down by 2 points against Sue Maddison, Kay Craft and Lorraine Baker.

Happy draw winners today: Sue, Kay and Lorraine, with Helen, Vi and Di cashing in, in the 100’s club.

Next week, Tuesday, 12th October will see the Final of the Club Championship Fours: Team Reed vs Team Frame. Good luck to all eight players. Play begins at 9:30am, with a press photo taken at 9:15!
We’ve flipped the calendar over to a new month filled with birthdays.

Happy days and celebrations to Rhona, Flo, Cherie, Wendy, Chris and Brenda!

Nominations are open for the Club Minor Singles and Pairs for 2021. Remember Trading Table (floral) on 19th October.

Backyard Cricket Hits A Six!

October 8, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

THE BIGGEST… NSW Blues players Daniel Hughes, Nathan Lyon, Liam Hatcher are encouraging everyone to join in NSW’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket tomorrow.

With lockdowns set to lift and the cricket season on its way, Cricket NSW is encouraging households across the state to take part in NSW’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket tomorrow, 9th October.

It is a chance for everyone – families, flatmates and even singletons – to get active, have a laugh and experience a form of the sport which everyone can play, even if you don’t have access to a cricket bat, stumps or a ball.

Leading the charge for NSW’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket is NSW and Australian star Nathan Lyon, who along with NSW Blues housemates Liam Hatcher and Daniel Hughes, has been enjoying some backyard cricket during the winter months.

“The best thing about backyard cricket is that you can make up your own rules to reflect the space you have at home and the amount of people playing. If you don’t have cricket equipment, backyard cricket is about improvising, so think about using a bin or the fence for stumps, socks for a ball, and a piece of wood as the bat,” said Nathan.

To be in the running to win the major prize of a Weber Spirit II E320 plus an all-new Weber Traveler or one of eleven $100 Weber.com vouchers, participants need to register for the Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket at cricketnsw.com.au and then post on the “Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket” Facebook Event page their video entry for the most creative wicket-taking celebration that occurred during their game.

“The Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket is a light-hearted initiative to get everyone across NSW to prioritise their health and wellbeing, and do a fun activity together,” said Joanne Scanlon, Cricket NSW General Manager – Community Cricket Experiences.

Women’s Bowls

October 1, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

On Tuesday two matches of Club Championship Fours went ahead. Fran Dixon/Heather Harvey/Joan Simpson/Maureen Miller found the going a bit tough against Helen Heraghty(sub)/Betsy Johnstone/Liz Byrne/Rhona Went, going down 25 to 10.

A similar result when Kay Craft/Chris Curteis/Lorraine Baker/Elaine Miller were pushing the barrow uphill on rink 2, and were defeated by Di Howell/Valmai Westcott/Lea Orr/Robyn Morgan, 23 to 11.

Welcome to new player, Sue Maddison! She teamed with Merilyn Rodgers and Marja Iffland and were too strong for Gwenda Carty/Chris Cox/Eileen Bradley. Beth Thom-as/Vi West/Rosemary Mitchell enjoyed a comfortable win over Julie Green/Maria Willcockson/Carol Reed.

Nominations for Minor Pairs and Singles are open; and next week Tuesday, 5th October 5 the Fours semi-finals will be played.

Sports Oval Gets Spiced Up

October 1, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

SPECIAL DAY… At the commencement of construction of the redevelopment of Spicer Oval on Tuesday were (L-R) Cr Neil Westcott, Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton, Ben Howard (Parkes Shire Council), Phil Donato MP, Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith, Glen Tilston (Hines Construction), Allan Ryan (Parkes Boars), Scott Knights (President Parkes Senior Cricket), Duncan Blair (Project Manager Parkes Shire Council) and Kevin Oliver (President Parkes Boars).

By the end of June next year the Parkes Boars Rugby Union Football Club will have its own $1.6 million facility at the Spicer Oval.

“I can’t express how much this means to our club,” said Allan Ryan of the Boars at the commencement of construction this week. “There is nothing like having your own club house. We are very, very grateful. This is going to be a game changer for our club and give us pride and identity.”

The redevelopment of Spicer Oval will include a modern amenities block, a club-house and canteen with additional function capabilities, plus a viewing platform accommodating 300 people to service year-round participation of a range of different sports. The building contract was awarded to Hines Construction.

While it will provide the Parkes Boars with a dedicated facility and accommodate junior, senior and women’s rugby matches, the oval will also be used for cricket matches of all grades and ages.

Phil Donato MP said it was a very special day for the Parkes Community and a significant project for the Boars, who had won the premiership two years in a row. “It will be good for the Boars to have their own facility and a venue to match other clubs’ facilities in the region.”

Parkes Mayor Ken Keith said it was a great move forward for the oval that was known as the People’s Park originally where the great Donald Bradman had played many years ago. “It has been the home of so much sport in our community and it still is.

He said the next phase would be to level the playing field to include two rugby fields and the cricket pitch.

Stage 1 of the redevelopment of Spicer Oval included the upgrade of the LED lighting in line with the lighting code for night time football and cricket.

So Good To Be Back!

September 24, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Fourteen brave gals of the ‘Beanie Brigade’ braved the single-figure temperatures and icy winds in an impressive show of dedication to return to sport on Tuesday. Several girls went incognito with only their eyes showing through beanies, scarves, hoods and masks.

I think Fran Dixon and Eileen Bradley were vying against Kay Craft and Joan Simpson, but went down by a few shots on Rink 3.

Elaine Miller tripped on Betsy Johnstone’s scarf, handicapping her action, resulting in a loss against Jan McPhee and Marja Iffland in a low-scoring game on Rink 5.

Merilyn Rodgers used the unfair advantage of double hand-warmers and teamed up with Gwenda Carty, who wore her whole wardrobe, and Maureen Miller to thoroughly defeat Brenda Davies/Lea Orr/Lynn Ryan in an enjoyable stoush on Rink 4.

So good to return to the warm clubhouse for a catch up and bonus cream cake thanks to President Maureen!

We adopted the new idea of just marking one card in social games, with the 2nd skip keeping track on the scoreboard – great addition.

The draw for the Club Championship Fours is:
• B Davies/B Johnstone/L Byrne/R Went vs F Dixon/H Harvey/J Simpson/M Miller
• M Rodgers/K Evans/R Mitchell/J McPhee vs M Iffland/M Willcockson/G Carty/C Frame
• D Howell/L Ryan/L Orr/M Grant vs K Craft/C Curteis/L Baker/E Miller
• Bye: J Green/L Keane/E Bradley/C Reed

First round to be played next Tuesday, 28th September at 10am.

Nominations are now open for Club Minor Singles and Minor Pairs. Our next Trading Table, with “floral” gift theme, will be held on 19th October.

Thanks Baldy and Ground Control for your dedication to keeping the greens alive!

Tennis Is Back!

September 17, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Did you know tennis is allowed to be played under lockdown? The Parkes Tennis Club is offering one-on-one lessons.

The smiles on the faces of the Hot Shots kids were priceless when they were allowed to return this week. They were so excited to be on court enjoying some physical activity while some of the mums used the time to go for a quiet walk around the oval.

Some of the Hot Shot players who returned to the tennis court this week.

Why You Need To Keep Exercising

September 17, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Working out at home or going for a run around the park might not be your idea of getting great fitness results, but it is an important step in normality.

There are still some sports allowed under lockdown and these include: running, golf, cycling, shooting hoops, strength training, pilates, yoga, dance, and kicking a soccer ball with one other person. Keeping a daily activity routine this lockdown is just one way you can maintain some control over your everyday life. And it’s more important than you may think.

Regular exercise is good for both our physical and mental health. Start by setting achievable goals, such as being active most days, or every day if you can. It doesn’t have to be a whole-body workout that pushes you to your physical limited, but getting the body moving and the heart rate up is a simple way to ensure you use it, before you lose it.

Here are some simple things that might help you keep on track:
• finding things you enjoy doing
• varying your activities to keep them interesting
• setting achievable goals
• setting a routine and planning your day to include time for activity
• monitoring your activity and progress
• getting the support of your family and friends

The benefits of regular exercise include:
• reducing the risk of health conditions like stroke and heart dis-ease
• controlling weight
• reducing stress and anxiety
• improving sleep
