Scott Shreds Parkrun Record

July 9, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

NEW RECORD… Scott Westcott set a new record of 15:51 for the parkrun course in Parkes on Saturday. He lead the 5km run by more than five minutes.

The Northparkes Oval Parkrun volunteers had a pleasant surprise on Saturday when former Olympian Scott Westcott turned up for the 22nd event of the weekly 5km run.

Surprise soon converted to excitement when Scott set off at a blistering pace and finished the two laps of the set course in a new record of 15:51. He improved the record of Keith Macpherson, which he ran at the second event in February, by 55 seconds.

Scott said he was aiming for a record. “I wanted to put something out there that could take a while to break. It was extraordinarily tough actually,” he said of the Parkes course, which is fast gaining a reputation for being one of the toughest in NSW. “They found every hill they could around Pioneer Oval I reckon.”

He was planning on running the Gold Coast Marathon last weekend, but it was canceled. “We came to Parkes instead, a week early, and had a perfect little morning with the family. All my cousins, my kids and Glen’s kids were running today, with Mum watching on.”

The Westcott family made a clean sweep of the first three places with Scott’s son Noah taking second place in 21:09 and his brother Glen crossing the finish line one second later to take third place.

Scott said he was not a regular at parkrun, but enjoyed doing it whenever he visited Parkes. “I was here over Easter last and ran it with my son. I won’t always go that hard and reckon next time I will run with my young bloke to help him get a personal best time.”

Other participants on Saturday were as excited to see Scott, who took part in the marathon at the previous Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “Not surprised his time was so fast! It was insane to watch,” said Zarna Gould.

A Tango Or Two At Masked Bowls

July 2, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Eighteen ladies rolled up for Tuesday’s ‘masked bowls’! Not exactly a sell-out, but those who attended made an effort to dress accordingly! Some colourful, patterned and batik masks were of interest, while many girls opted for the nil-washing option of the single-use variety! And then those low-cut versions – ooh la la!

First out on the dance floor of Rink 6, Kim Evans/Rosemary Mitch-ell/Maureen Baillie tangoed with Helen Heraghty/Jan McPhee/Rhona Went in the first round of the Club Championship Triples. Team Baillie trod on the toes of their opposition, winning by a narrow margin.

In the other triples title round, on Stage 2, Heather Harvey/Mau-reen Miller/Joan Simpson had all the right moves, but not enough to upset the winning rhythm of Merilyn Rodgers/Di Howell/Lea Orr.

Six ladies enjoyed a social hoedown up in the country on Rink 17! Julie Green/Gwenda Carty/Carol Reed out-performed Valmai Westcott/Kay Craft/Maria Willcockson. Julie recovered well from a mistimed moonwalk, and rallied for her team. Jules, you rock!

Once inside the club, when seated with food/drink, masks lost their appeal! Julie succumbed to liquid pain-killers!

The second round of the Club Championship Triples will be held in a fortnight, on 13th July.

Women have been playing bowls here at Parkes B & SC for 70 years! This milestone will be celebrated on Tuesday, 20th July. More details at the AGM.

Next Tuesday, 6th July, there will be social bowls till 12 noon, followed by the AGM at 12:30pm. A shared lunch, Covid-rules-friendly, will be enjoyed afterwards. If you prefer to bring your own lunch, please feel free to do so.

To play social bowls, call the club on 6862 1446 between 9 – 9:30am, with bowls to commence at 10am.

Tokyo Here She Comes – Second Games For Mariah

July 2, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Mariah Williams will go to her second Olympic Games in Tokyo later this month. The hockey competition will run from 24th July to 6th August at the Oi Hockey Stadium. (Photo: www.olympics.com.au)

Parkes hockey fans will be glued to the TV during the Tokyo Olympic Games as local superstar Mariah Williams was recently named in the Hockeyroos squad to attend her second Games.

Mariah, who has a hockey field named after her in Parkes, played her first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

She was born in Parkes and started playing hockey at the age of four. According to her profile on the website for Australian Olympic athletes, she always admired the work of Australian hockey player Casey Sablowksi for both her talent and mentoring abilities. While attending Middleton Public School, triple Olympian Stephen Davies who also grew up in Parkes, visited the school to pass on the Olympic vision.

Mariah began to excel in hockey, and at age 13 move to Newcastle to attend Hunt-er Sports High to be in a more competitive and focused environment.

Mariah achieved her first international cap in April 2013 at the age of 17 during a test series against Korea in Perth. She quickly climbed through the ranks and gained her first regular fixture in the Australian team in 2015. She competed in every major international tournament, including winning gold in the Oceania Cup.

She has represented Australia 86 times and has scored 16 goals.

Despite battling some serious injuries in recent years, her determination and drive kept her going to get back into form and be named in the Hockeyroos squad.

As a proud Wiradjuri woman, Mariah is passionate about furthering recognition for indigenous culture and has been named as an ambassador for the 2021 Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Share a Yarn pro-gram. She hopes with this opportunity she can help people learn and share the rich history and stories of the Indigenous Australian community.

Small Grant, Big Difference

June 25, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

At the Bogan Gate Golf Club last Friday were (L-R) Don McKeowen, Phil Donato, Robert McIntyre, Marion McIntyre and Milton Buchanan.

Bogan Gate Golf Club has made a successful application for funding through the 2020 Community Building Partnership Program. The club, with the support of Member for Orange, Phil Donato, received $8,782 to be utilised for a 6.6kW solar installation on their facility to mitigate the club’s growing electricity bill. Club spokesperson Marion McIntyre, who has had a 30-year involvement with the club with her husband Robert, said the committee was continually working to host events at the venue, and reducing costs meant they could give back more to the

Bridge Banter

June 18, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The serious Thursday winners are Ingrid Stephenson, Kevin Robinson, Bev Laing and Suzie McNamara.

In serious Bridge, which we try to play on Thursdays, you should bid without any speaking at all. You might be giving verbal clues to your partner! So, we use a bidding box where each player in turn writes their bid in silence. There must be no facial ex-pressions or gestures which might give information to a partner.

One old timer who had only played social bridge announced verbally: ‘Pass.’

“Dad, you have to use the bidding box!” his partner stated.

The old timer proceeded to pick up the box off the table and then spoke into it: “Pass!”

Best bidders this week were:

Tuesday, 8th June Laurie Keane and Helen McQuie; Thursday, 10th June Bev Laing with Suzie McNamara north/south and Ingrid Stephenson with Kevin Robinson east/west. Join us Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. Check our page https://www.parkes.bridge-club.org or call Greig Ball 0429621712 or Bev Laing 0418114826 for more information.

Liz And Rhona Club Champions

June 18, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Liz Byrne an Rhona Went (left) won the Club Championship Pairs, with runners-up Marja Iffland and Merilyn Rodgers.

The final of the club championship pairs was played on Tuesday with 16 bowlers gracing the greens. The in-form pairing of Liz Byrne and Rhona Went proved too strong for runners-up Merilyn Rodgers and Marja Iffland. Congratulations to you all!

Two games of triples filled the social bowls card. Flo Riseborough/Valmai Westcott/Maureen Baillie had a good win over Kim Evans/Rosemary Mitchell/Robyn Morgan, who were “bogged” on eight points for half the game!

Carol Reed/Heather Harvey/Lea Orr were vying for the lead all game against Lorraine Baker/Eileen Bradley/Joan Simpson. A close and enjoyable game, with Team Simpson taking the win. They continued on their winning ways, pocketing the cash in the winners’ draw!

The first round of the club triples will be on 29th June, as the earlier advertised date clashes with the Australian Open. Don’t forget the AGM on 6th July at 12:30 pm followed by a shared lunch. To play social bowls, please ring the club on 6862 1446 between 9 – 9:30 am, play to begin at 10.

Croquet Is A Huge Hit

June 4, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Jim Nicholls, Chair of Croquet Australia, coaching Parkes Croquet Club players.

The Parkes Croquet Club is well underway, leaping from infancy to establishment in one bound. A visit from Jim Nicholls, croquet expert and chair of Croquet Australia, was an exciting event for the young club on their third ever game.

‘Playing different variations of croquet and rearranging your court spaces will allow you to cater for a lot more players and keep their interest,’ Jim advised.

Jim provided lots of valuable information on how to keep the ever-growing number of participants engaged, as well as giving players some professional coaching tips on croquet techniques.

Matches are on Saturdays from 2:30pm at the futsal court, PBSC Cecile Street.
