Women’s Bowls

November 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The rain has been a treat for the greens, however, keeping our Ground Control busy.

The main event was the Minor Singles Championship final between Lorraine Baker and Maureen Miller. Tension was high, and the match was an even contest. The scores ebbed and flowed, with Maureen finishing with a surge to take the title for 2021 over 32 ends.

In social games, Isabel Svensden/Eileen Bradley/Lynn Ryan/Maureen Baillie came up against the barrage of Flo Riseborough/Hilda McPherson/Liz Byrne with Team Byrne’s score reaching the high-water mark and Team Baillie remaining in drought.

In a raucous game of fours, Frances Charlton/Di Howell/Maria Willcockson/Merilyn Rodgers/Rosemary Mitchell played Kim Evans/Lea Orr/Chris Cox/Jan McPhee/Vi West. Scores rose steadily but the depth of experience in Team West was the catalyst for a win!

In another triples game, scores remained close all the way. Carol Reed/Chris Curteis/Heather Harvey kept their heads above water, leaving Kate Keogh/Kay Craft/Joan Simpson bobbing in their wake.

Men’s Bowls

November 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The weather gods smiled on us on Saturday and four championship matches were played.

Minor Pairs Championship

Rob Irving and Jim Blake started well against Brian and Greg Townsend and lead 10-1 after nine ends. Brian and Greg fought back, but Rob and Jim advanced to the next round with a win 18-12.

Mixed Pairs Championship

Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward had a close match against Merilyn Rodgers and Wilbur Harris. After six ends Merilyn and Wilbur had opened up a lead of 10-3, Gwenda and Col gradually got back into the game, but in the end Merilyn and Wilbur won 24-20.

Maree Grant and Tom Furey were too strong for John Wright and Bettsy Johnstone, winning 31-15.

In the Handicap Pairs Dave Johnson and Mal Porter lead all the way against Col Miller and Ron Hornery, running out winners 33-21.

Parkes Bowling & Sports Club Wrap

November 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The women raised the grand amount of $1,065 at their Spring Fling event last week for CanAssist. President Maureen Miller presented the cheque to CanAssist President Sylvia Glendenning on Tuesday.

Women’s Bowls

The rain has given the greens a blast of oxygenated H2O, and Ground Control have done a grand job preparing the perfect surface.

In the semi-finals of the Minor Singles Lorraine Baker defeated Lynn Ryan in a close tussle in atrocious conditions last Friday, and Maureen Miller sewed up the match against Heather Harvey on Tuesday. The final will take place between Lorraine and Maureen next week.

In a social game of pairs, Marja Iffland and Fran Dixon kept it very friendly when playing against Betsy Johnstone and Lynn Ryan, drawing the game 15-all.

Sue Butson of Ulladulla and Flo Riseborough were pleased with their game, and enjoyed a win over Kay Craft and Carol Reed.

Valmai Westcott/Chris Cox/Merilyn Rodgers had a challenge on their hands against Frances Charlton/Di Howell/Vi West, the eventual winners by a good margin.

Kim Evans/Jan McPhee (sisters with attitude), together with Rose Mitchell and Joan Simpson were even-stevens against Eileen

Bradley/Hilda McPherson/Maureen Baillie, 20-all after 21 ends!

To play social bowls, call the club between 9 – 9.30am with play to commence at 10am.

Men’s Bowls

Minor Triples Championship
Rob Irving and Jo and Mike Simpson had a bit of trouble shaking off Greg Huggins, Jim Blake and Mal Porter. After 16 ends Team Huggins lead 14-13 but then Team Irving took control and won all of the remaining ends to win 25-14.

Mixed Pairs Championship
Only one match of Mixed Pairs was played last week, and what a close game it was. The team of Brett and Cherrie Frame were up against Dave Johnson and Lorraine Baker. The scores were locked at 21 all with one end to play. Both teams were holding shot but eventually Brett and Cherrie scored two shots to advance to the semi-final.

Upgrade For Second Hockey Field

November 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

CHALLENGE: Hockey Olympian Mariah Williams and Deputy Premier Paul Toole show off their skills at a major funding announcement for Parkes Hockey Inc on Monday.

The Parkes Hockey community will soon see a second field being upgraded to the latest technology thanks to the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions Fund.

Parkes Olympian Mariah Williams joined Deputy Premier Paul Toole and Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier Sam Farraway on Monday to announce a grant of $2,280,083 for the redevelopment of the Stephen Davies field to a water-based pitch.

“This is a great opportunity for Parkes to redevelop its second turf,” said Mariah. “We have a very loving hockey community, and it is really inspiring to see how many players are making the NSW teams. To have two high tech pitches is really good as it is an incredibly feeling to play hockey in your home town with such great facilities.”

Mariah said it was really important to have a water-based pitch as all international hockey was played on these surfaces. “It would really help to develop the skills of young players from a young age.”

Sam said the project included the removal of the old surface and the complete installation of a new playing surface, as the current surface is at the end of its lifespan.

“Parkes Hockey Inc boasts over 600 members across a range of ages and abilities, many being state and national representatives. This field needs urgent upgrades to ensure Parkes can continue to bid for and host regional, state and national carnivals and offer a superior facility to the community.”

“Hockey in Parkes defines this community with over 600 members involved. The right infrastructure and facilities allow us to develop the next talent as we see here with Mariah Williams,” said Paul Toole.

According to Paul, Resources for Regions has already highlighted the importance of the sector to the regions, with Rounds One through to Seven delivering 149 projects worth $345 million to mining communities since 2012.

COLOUR AND EXCITEMENT

The Parkes Bowling and Sports Club was buzzing with excitement and colour on our Spring Fling Gala Bowls Day on Tuesday.

All 52 bowlers enjoyed getting together with visitors from other clubs, dressing in colourful, floral mufti, and playing social bowls.

We all lined up to bowl one delivery, simultaneously, towards the “spider” to start off the day. Chris Cox and Betsy Johnstone accepted the offered prizes.

The “Irish” end tested us out, with the jack being rolled towards the bowls, instead of the normal order of events. And to finish, we played with our opposite hand, leaving many of us diving for cover!

With a picnic-style lunch awaiting us, the action moved inside. A tremendous day all round, and we raised $981 for CanAssist!

Happy birthdays to November calendar babes: Helen, Elaine and Heather!

To play social bowls next Tuesday, call the club, 68621446, between 9 – 9:30am to play at 10am.

Parkes Hosts Important Squash Camps For Juniors

November 12, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Services Squash Centre is one of six venues where the NSW Junior Performance Pathway camps were launched last weekend with 24 young players attending in Parkes.

The Parkes Services Squash Centre was packed to capacity last weekend for the launch of a new program to get more kids on court and make attendance more accessible.

Parkes was one of six regional venues where the NSW Junior Performance Pathway was launched, sponsored by Bright Spark Power. A total of 90 young players attended across the six centres to access to top quality coaching on the day. The Parkes courts had 24 players in attendance.

Squash NSW CEO Richard Griffiths and Bright Spark Power CEO, Arran Coughlan were in Parkes to attend the launch of the program to promote squash to communities across NSW.

“It was great to be back traveling to regional NSW and visit Parkes Squash Centre,” said Richard from Squash NSW, who travelled from Sydney. “It was amazing to see people of all ages back playing again. Squash NSW are committed to continuing to support all our centres across the state including regional areas to showcase squash and grow this great sport.”

Arran agreed that it was great to see Parkes squash buzzing with families again. “Being able to once again get out amongst our customers and communities that we support is a reward for all the great work by the NSW community in getting through the last few months.”

Jay Cross, who runs the Parkes centre with his wife Judy, said the camp last weekend was the first of another five to be held in each region between now and July next year when the NSW team is selected. “Attending these camps is pourceart of the selection criteria to represent NSW. The idea of the camps being held regionally is to get more kids on court and make attendance more accessible, no matter where you live.”

Bridge Banter

November 5, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Bridge is a marvellous game. But bridge bidding doesn’t always go smoothly. A bid can sometimes be misconstrued, or a bid can even be made to try to get your partner out of trouble. Not a good idea. But one advantage of bad bidding is that you get good practice at playing atrocious contracts. The real test of a bridge player is not always about staying out of trouble but escaping once you’re in it.

Staying well out of trouble this week were Greig Ball with Margaret Hawken on Tuesday; Suzie McNamara with Beth Thomas for north and John Quin with Peter Dearden for south on Thursday; and Suzie McNamara with Greig Ball on Monday.

We play Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm and Mondays at 6:30pm at the Lutheran Church Hall. Check our website www.parkes.bridge-club.org or call Kevin Robinson 0429 621 712 for more information.
