Project Sprouts Welcomes New Coordinator

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Anne Norton.

Many people will know Anne Norton from her years in the teaching profession, but last month she joined Project Sprouts as the new coordinator.

Anne said she had attended the initial community meeting in 2018 when Royal Far West presented its “Invisible Children” report bringing to light confronting findings about the state of children’s developmental health in rural and remote Australia. After retiring in 2019, she was keen to join Project Sprouts.

Looking at her new role and the vital part Project Sprouts play in our community, Anne said: “I would love to see children receiving timely and affordable access to local paediatric allied health services via a systematic approach that identifies, screens and provides therapy referrals.

“It will be my role to collaborate and co-ordinate with Royal Far West and the Pro-ject Sprouts Working Party for the provision of these services, and to offer access to educational capacity building sessions for teachers, parents and service providers. I will also be gathering data which will inform our future planning and reporting back to our philanthropic funders and stakeholders.”

Anne started working as a teacher in 1976 and taught at a number of schools around NSW. She moved to Parkes in 2003 when her late husband bought a business here. She joined Middleton Public School (MPS) and worked there until her retirement in 2019.

In 2014 she trained as a Reading Recovery Teacher, and is at present the coordinator of the COVID Literacy and Numeracy Support Team at MPS.

Anne is confident Project Sprouts will ensure all little children in our community are visible and have the best start to formal schooling. “In turn this will lead to confident, productive, resilient young people, who in the long-term will work and positively contribute to the Parkes Shire community.”

Be Road Ready For Harvest

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Farmers, contract harvesters, transport companies and agricultural machinery retailers are invited to attend the Be Road Ready for Harvest Virtual Field Day via Zoom on Tuesday, 15th September from 8am.

The event will be held online for the second year in a row due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

“Last year’s online delivery was well received and attended,” said Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor.

“It’s looking like we are going to have a good harvest again this year, and it is important to refresh people’s knowledge about the current rules and regulations for legally and safely moving harvest equipment and trucks on the road.

“Safety and compliance during harvest is very important. Operators need to be aware of their responsibilities and ensure that all warning devices and travel requirements are adhered to.”

Topics to be discussed include access, permits, fire safety, fatigue, load restraint and more.

Registration is free but spaces are limited. Register online at www.eventbrite.com and search ‘Be Road Ready for Harvest Virtual Field Day’. All attendees will receive an information pack including an NHVR cooler bag, relevant brochures and a 2021 ‘Moving Harvest Machinery’ USB, which contains all the notices and information you need in the lead up to and during harvest.

If you have a specific question that you would like answered, contact Melanie on 6861 2364 or Melanie.Suitor@parkes.nsw.gov.au so that it can be covered in the presentations.

The Virtual Field Day is supported by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Transport for NSW, NSW Police, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Farmers, Australian Custom Harvesters Association, Graincorp and the Grain Transport Safety Network.

Pop-Up Clinic In Tullamore

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Shire Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton (right) with the RFDS clinic staff.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) hosted a pop-up vaccination clinic in Tullamore on Monday. The clinic took place after a resident contacted local member Phil Donato who notified the Western NSW Local Health District of the need. Tullamore responded with 120 residents presenting for vaccination.

Due to distance from other centres this service allowed older residents, parents with small children as well as essential workers who don’t have time to travel to be vaccinated. School children were also able to be vaccinated. The community thanks Phil Donato, WNSWLHD and the wonderful staff from RFDS for ensuring Tullamore is safe and well.

Cooler Days, Warmer Nights In Spring

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Spring in Australia may see more rain than usual in the east and a dry outlook for parts of the west, Bureau of Meteorology climatologists say.

According to the latest seasonal outlook issued by the Bureau, this spring is likely to bring above average rainfall for people living in the east of the country as well as cooler days and warmer nights.

Bureau climatologist Dr Andrew Watkins said predictions for a wetter and warmer spring came after a particularly wet and warm winter.

“Nationally, we’ve seen the wettest winter since 2016,” he said.

“Australia’s average winter temperature is also expected to be one of the ten warmest on record, particularly in the tropical north.”

Dr Watkins said the main reason behind the Bureau’s prediction for a wetter than average spring was a climate driver called the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

“We’ve currently got a negative IOD – a phenomenon which typically brings an increased chance of rainfall to southern and eastern Australia,” he said.

“This negative IOD is expected to persist throughout spring but is currently weaker than the last negative IOD event we saw in 2016, which brought Australia’s wettest May-October period on record.”

Henry Back In National Court

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Henry Kross at last year’s Australian Junior Championships where he won the national title.

Parkes junior squash star Henry Kross has been selected to represent NSW at the Australian Junior Championships in December at Woden, ACT.

While Henry has a string of achievements under his belt, this championship will see him compete in the Under 13 category for the first time, which will be a new challenge for him.

“I am so excited and really hope it goes ahead,” said Henry this week. “I was pretty surprised to get selected. This is my first year in the Under 13’s, so I thought some of the older boys might get selected before me.”

Henry said he looked forward to playing in the teams event. “My Under 13 boys team has Kasper Cheung and Kieran Willathagamuwa – they are both from Sydney and really good players. I think Queensland will be the hardest, but we will do our best.

Last year Henry won the NSW Under 11’s Junior State Squash titles and then represented NSW at the Australian Junior Championships, the highest ranked junior tournament in Australia, claiming the boys under 11 division. He was named Junior Sportsperson of the Year at this year’s Australia Day Award ceremony.

“I would also like to win another Australian title, but if I can make the quarters in my first year up an age would be awesome,” he said.

Henry is currently ranked #1 in NSW and #2 in Australia for Under 13 Boys, and won the ACT Under 13 State title.

Henry has a good support team locally with coach Geoff Leonard, and players Matt Swindle, Richard King, Geoff Wyatt, Damo Ewin and Stuart Dearden who are always more than willing to jump on the court and hit with Henry.

Do You Have A Favourite Tree In Parkes?

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

There was an interesting discussion on the ‘Parkes In Photos of Years Gone Past’ Facebook page this week when Margaret Marshall posted a photo of the massive old River Red Gum Tree (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) outside the Parkes Shire Council building saying she reckoned it was one of the oldest trees in Parkes.

“There was a water course with a little bridge beside it in the 1950’s, a great place to play, especially when Bogan Street was flooding. It is a wonderful big tree that I remember from my childhood,” she said.

Someone suggested the tree should be lit up at night to bring out its true beauty. Many others shared memories of their favourite trees around town.

Please Do The Right Thing!

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

LET’S WORK TOGETHER… The Police is playing a major role in ensuring the safety of our community as the COVID pandemic is spreading across our region. (Photo: Central West Police District)

As the Parkes community is heading towards the end of its third week of lock-down and a total of ten COVID cases as at Wednesday, the majority of people have so far listened to and followed the public health orders.

Parkes Police Chief Inspector Scott Rayner said while the community had been vigilant to stay abreast of public health orders, an issue of concern for local Police was the amount of people moving around the area outside of the current rules. “An aggravating feature is that some people disregard the stay-at-home orders and are moving around and not wearing a face mask as required.”

He said over the past few days, Police had to make two arrests for repeat breaches of Public Health orders and issued numerous infringement notices for non-compliance. “The fines are quite substantial and should act as a deterrent,” the Chief Inspector said.

While additional officers are working in the central and far western areas of the State and other officers have been re-deployed from the usual duties for Operation Stay at Home, the Police are also working with local health, council, emergency services and welfare agencies to prevent mass infection occurring in our area.

The Chief Inspector said the Police were working on the highways to identify persons travelling between local government areas in contravention of restrictions, while there was an increased visible presence in the town/villages of our area.

“Our message to the community is to please do the right thing. Follow the health advice and restrictions. Please seriously consider vaccination and get tested if you have the mildest of symptoms.”

As a parent what are your challenges and what are your pleasures with home-based learning?

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Ronel van Wyk with Le-Rie and AJ: The challenges are keeping the kids focused and motivated to complete their work. I’m a high school teacher and now I have to be a Year 1 teacher – LOL. The kids miss their friends a lot and playing with them. The pleasures are having all this precious time with my kids, the one-on-one learning experience, being able to see my children grow in their knowledge on a daily basis, and being able to create my own outdoor learning experiences with my kids! We can go for numerous walks and playtimes at the park.

Australia

September 3, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Sing me gentle lullabies
that soothe me with their sound,
hold my hand ‘til morning
for then I’m on my way,
I’ll cross the land around me
I’ll see the morning sunrise
And watch the evening tide,

I’ll pick a desert bloom for you
And watch the petals fall.
I’m but a wind that’s calling
I’m but a fallen soldier trapped inside your spell,
just another casualty
of a land that holds my heart,
a land of hidden beauty
and one I know so well.

Treat this land with kindness
See the gifts it gives,
Learn its ancient wisdom
calm its troubled heart,
bring it peace and shield it
from the souls who mean it wrong,
stand proud beneath the gum trees
and sing a song or two,
give it all you’ve got inside
and she’ll be true to you.

Australia has my respect, always has, always will.
