Cricket In The Dish – What A Blast!

October 18, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

“I’ve played cricket in lots of places. In the backyard, the driveway, inside the house, but never on top of a radio telescope.” Brisbane Heat star, and one of the world’s biggest hitters, Chris Lynn joined other cricket heroes and local kids to recreate the famous scene from the movie, The Dish, at the Parkes Radio Telescope last Thursday.

Under dark, stormy clouds they tried to ‘blast’ a ball into space to launch Cricket Australia’s new kids program Woolworths Cricket Blast “I didn’t quite get the ball into orbit, but it was a great experience. It was amazing,” said right-handed top order batsman Chris.

He was joined by Big Bash League heroes Peter Handscomb, Alyssa Healy, Ash Gardner and Nic Carey, Parkes kids Nina Richardson-Barley and Nate Henry, and Nate Vincent from Condobolin.

About 60 children from Parkes, Orange, Dubbo, Condobolin, Forbes and Cowra signed up to be part of the exciting day and took part in many cricket activities on the grounds around the radio telescope.

In the famous scene in the movie two engineers turn the giant radio telescope, used for beaming live television pictures of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon to the world, into a makeshift cricket pitch.

Last Thursday the cricket heroes climbed the giant structure under guidance from CSIRO Operations Scientist John Sarkissian to re-enact the scene using soft balls not to damage the dish.

“The cricket scene in the film has become an iconic feature of the CSIRO Parkes Observatory, and to see it re-enacted by real cricketers was a blast,” said John. “It was fantastic to see how much the junior cricketers enjoyed themselves. I’m sure they will remember it for a very long time.”

Woolworths Cricket Blast is a program for girls and boys of all abilities between the ages of 5 to 10 to learn new skills and play Australia’s favourite sport.

Endeavour Dragons Conquer 20km Challenge

October 18, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

After four months of training, the newest sports club in Parkes stepped out in club colours for the first time to take on a formidable challenge. Eighteen members of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club put up their paddles for the Mudgee 20km challenge held at Lake Windermere recently.

A total of three boats took part in the inaugural event organised by the Mudgee Dragon Boat Club with paddlers also from Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Forbes and Illawarra. The Endeavour Dragons took to the water with nervous excitement and remained focused even when the conditions turned blustery with very choppy waters whenever ski boats passed by.

“We rode some rough water at times but everyone remembered the drills we went through at training with Coach Warren Edwards, and that powered us through with style,” said President Bill Thomas, who steered his team safely through the tough conditions as sweep.

Bill was very happy with his mostly novice crew’s first performance. “The jubilation on everyone’s faces getting out of the boat told the story,” he said.

The Endeavour Dragons have started preparing for their very first race in Bathurst next month, the Western Region Regatta. New members are always welcome to join the Parkes Dragon Boat Club, or to just come for a try out at Lake Endeavour.

Summer time sessions are on Thursday 5:45pm for 6pm on the water, and Sunday at 8:30 am for 9am on the water. Contact 0418 253 045 for more information.

Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP presented NSW Government State Representative Awards to Warren and Donna Edwards for representing the Western Region in the Australian National Dragon Boat Championships earlier this year.

“I am delighted to present these awards to Warren and Donna for their outstanding contribution in representing the Western Region in the Australian National Dragon Boat Championships in March this year, at Lake Kawana in Queensland,” Phil said.

Donna said it was a great sport as you meet so many people and get to go everywhere to compete in events. “The best part is the community of dragon boaters.” “We are really lucky with our local council with all the assistance we have received in helping to promote our sport,” said Warren.

Parkes Soccer Score Big

September 13, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association received a big boost last week towards upgrading amenities at the soccer fields. Parkes is one of several clubs in NSW to benefit from $4.1 million from the 2015 Asian Cup Legacy Fund. Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless was in Parkes to hand over a cheque of $150,000 to President Kevin Medlyn.

Kevin said the club was no longer able to attract big tournaments to Parkes because of its lack of suitable amenities. “We will refurbish the change rooms, add toilets and showers and build a new entrance.” The facilities are also not suitable for local players as the club saw an increase of 200 members this year following the Government incentive to get kids active. “We have 500 players here on a Saturday, and 150 on Sundays using the facilities,” said Kevin.

The total cost of the renovation would be over $300,000 with the club putting in $20,000.

Hockey Players Bring Back World Cup Bling

September 6, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes was well represented at the recent Hockey Masters World Cup in Spain with two local players running out for Australia. Maureen Massey and Graeme Tanswell played in Barcelona last month where 23 nations competed in men’s and women’s teams from over 35 to over 60 years.

Graeme played for the Australian Over 50s Men’s team who came home undefeated with the gold medal. Maureen Massey was goalkeeper of the Australian Over 60s women’s team and they won bronze. “It was a brilliant experience and to come home with some bling was an extra bonus,” said Maureen, who played in her third World Cup event, and represented Australia for the sixth time in her age division. It was Graeme’s first time in the Australian jersey.

Despite extremely hot conditions in Barcelona with the temperature reaching 40 degrees Celsius on some days, the Australian teams performed very well. “We played six games and finished up playing off for third and fourth position
against a Wattles Australian team,” said Maureen. This game finished with a one all draw so the bronze medal was decided upon by a penalty shootout won by our team 2 goals to 1.”

According to Maureen the best part of the experience was wearing the green and gold. “To represent your country is a huge honour at any age, although it does not come easily. There is a lot of time put into training, on fitness and skills. The levels of fitness of the women in this team is absolutely remarkable considering our ages.”

After a short break, Maureen will be flying to Perth at the end of September to participate in the Australian Women’s Masters Championships at Bunbury as goalkeeper for the NSW over 65 years women’s team.
