Young Swimmer Receives Award

December 13, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

A talented Parkes swimmer received a visit from a special guest at his school last week to present him with a state award. Member for Orange, Philip Donato MP presented a NSW Government State Representative Award to Matty Price at Holy Family Primary School last week for his achievements at the Australian School Swimming Championships in Hobart earlier in the year.

Matty, who is in year 6, did exceptionally well in the championships in the five races he qualified for. He won a silver medal in the 100m backstroke, a bronze in the 50m butterfly and a bronze in the medley relay team event. He also achieved four personal best times.

“I am delighted to present this award to young Matty for his outstanding contribution in representing our region at the Australian School Swimming Championships,” said Phil.

“Matty has displayed a commitment to his sport well beyond his years, working exceptionally hard to not only bring back the medals, but more importantly, achieve his own personal bests.

“It’s an honour for me to be able to recognise Matty’s contribution to sport, as his dedication sets an example for others – both young and old. I look forward to staying updated on your future swimming endeavours!”

Parkes Swimming Carnival

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Sharks swimmers have been training extremely hard since the start of the season in October for the annual carnival this weekend (1st and 2nd December). Swimmers from around the district will be taking part, which creates some stiff competition. Long distance events will be held on Saturday afternoon, which includes the 1500, 800 and 200 metre events.

The carnival is a qualifying meet for state and country times, which our swimmers are working hard to achieve. Over the last couple of months Parkes summers have attended swim meets in Canberra, Cowra and Forbes. All swimmers have achieved wonderful results and broke personal best times, which demonstrates their hard work and dedication to the sport.

The Parkes carnival is also a great opportunity for the up and coming swimmers to gain experience at a great venue in good company.

We wish all swimmers attending the carnival the best of luck and hoping that they achieve their personal best. A barbecue will be available on Sunday.

Convincing Victory Over Wellington

November 22, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes U/14 cricket team Parkes scored a convincing 91 run victory over a keen Wellington team at a superbly prepared Spicer Oval on Sunday. The Parkes team included a good number of U/12 players who took the opportunity to extend their skills by playing with talented U/14 players.

The scores were: Parkes 8/194 in 40 overs – Joseph Tanswell 75, Hunter Hawke 38, Jack Milne 23, Flynn Thompson 13 n.o, Maddy Spence 9, Isaiah Hill 2/29 off 8 overs, Nate Bradford 2/21 off 4 overs, Lachy George ½ off 6 overs.

Wellington 10/103 in 37.2 overs – Lachy George 23, Amali McNeil 18, Zeke Heterick 11, Callee Black 11, Joseph Tanswell 3/16 off 8 overs, Maddy Spence 2/9 off 4 overs, Ryan Dunford 2/5 off 4.2 overs, Hunter Hawke 1/11 off 8 overs.

Parkes batted first to see a very positive opening partnership between Joseph Tanswell and Jack Milne. They put on 51 runs in 11 overs before Jack was dismissed for 23 with 4 boundaries.

Hunter Hawke (38 runs off 44 balls with 4 very strong fours) then partnered with Joseph in a quick fire 63 run partnership for the second wicket. Joseph (75 runs from 89 balls with 7 well struck boundaries) should be very pleased with his highest score in his young career.

After a middle order collapse, late order players Flynn Thompson (13 n.o) and Harry Kennedy (6) added quick runs at the end of the innings.

In reply Wellington lost wickets at regular intervals. Maddy Spence and Geordie Duncan were impressive in the field, while Jackson Plummer also stood out. Joseph Tanswell completed an outstanding all-round match as he produced 8 accurate overs to capture 3 early order Wellington wickets. Maddy Spence (2/9) and Ryan Dunford (2/5) chimed in to take valuable wickets.

Tennis With The Ace

November 15, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Tennis Club will stage its annual Club Championships Singles this Sunday from 9am. The A and B Grades will see a good mix of experience and youth. Young Jake Magill of Bogan Gate will be searching for his fourth consecutive A Grade title. His biggest threat will come from good mate Ben Evans who has been in encouraging form the past couple of months. There will be no lack of power. If they meet in the final it will be entertaining tennis.

The B Grade may be somewhat of a lottery with defending champion James Fisher indicating his intention to play although his racquet has been firmly entrenched in the back shed for the entire year. Brendon Hunt has been a big improver this year and is the Ace’s pick in this group.

In the Ladies A Grade it will be a challenge for the young guns to see if they can work out a way to utilise their speed and skill to overcome the precision and guile of defending champ Helen Magill. Helen has taught most of them their craft so she knows their weaknesses, but as the years pass, Helen is slowing down and the teen brigade need to take advantage of this.

The Ladies B Grade is an unknown as entries are yet to close. The honour boards in the clubhouse tell the story of the first Parkes Town Tennis Club Championships held way back in 1953 with Vi Philpott (mother of current committee and Life Member Lyn Pengilly) taking out the Ladies Singles title. Many visitors comment on the history of the club when they peruse the photo and honour boards.

Fifteen Fabulous And Fantastic Paddlers

November 8, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Dragon Boat Club splashed onto the NSW regatta scene in Bathurst on Sunday by winning two second places at their very first race event. Most of the five-month-old club’s fifteen paddlers entered the Western Region Regatta as novices anticipating only to learn and gain valuable race experience. As soon as the team dipped their paddles into the beautiful, glassy Ben Chifley Dam, they stepped up and exceeded all expectations.

Both the women’s and men’s teams combined with the Sudu Dragon Boat Club from Wollongong and secured a place in the finals after three 200m heats each.

The women’s race was extremely tight with Parkes/Sudu missing out on the gold medal by a split second in a time of 1:02.75. The men’s team followed suit and also secured second place in a time of 56.91.

“For many of you to experience your very first regatta and come away with a silver in both the women’s and men’s opens is a remarkable achievement,” said President Bill Thomas. “What a privilege it was to share the moments in the boats with the most fabulous, fantastic fifteen paddlers you could ever wish for.”

Coach Warren Edwards was very impressed with the team’s performance and said: “The team friendship, bonding and spirit was evident from early in the morning and the gutsy performances just kept coming all day. I could not have been prouder of everyone on their first outing as a team.”

Bill congratulated Warren on achieving Level 3 Sweep status at the regatta, and both Bill and Warren thanked Regatta Coordinator Deb Abela for her tireless work organising the teams.

The Endeavour Dragons also attracted a lot of attention with their colourful race shirts receiving lots of compliments.
The Parkes Dragon Boat Club is steadily growing and always welcome new members or anyone who would like to come for a try-out. Details available on the club’s Facebook page.
