Ostini Wool Weekly Market Update

November 1, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

As the sale progressed buyer confidence eroded this week, pushing prices down continually. The finer microns were the hardest hit and by the end of the series 17.5 micron and finer were selling at levels 100-150 cents below those achieved the previous week. 19 micron and coarser did not sustain the same losses and were generally 50-75 cents easier.

The NRI lost a total of 107 cents for the week, closing at 1914 cents. The large price corrections were met with firm seller resistance, reflected by a passed in rate of 23.1% for the week, this was the highest passed in rate since February 2014, and came on top of the 6.9% of wool that was withdrawn prior to sale.

The skirtings followed a very similar path to the fleece. General losses of 100-150 cents were experienced, wool finer than 17.5 micron were most affected. The oddment sector had another week of large losses. Locks, stains and crutchings fell by 100-150 cents, pushing the three carding indicators down by an average of 138 cents.

Local Businesses And Shire Shine

October 25, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

It was literally raining awards over the Parkes Shire last week with local business super stars recognised at a gala event on Friday, while the Parkes Shire Mayor was honoured in Kiama.

More than 250 people in their best evening attire attended The Henrys gala presentation hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at the Parkes Services Club to support the nominees in 16 award categories.

The coveted Parkes Business of the Year award went to Regos Plus Tyre & Mechanical – one of four awards the business was presented with during the ceremony. Owner Patrick Lenehan said: “We couldn’t do it without our team and dedicated customers.”

He also accepted the Excellence in Manufacturing, Agribusiness, Mining, Industrial & Trade award, the Excellence in Small Business award and the Young Entrepreneur award.

The other award winners were: Station Motel – Excellence in Hospitality and Tourism Services award; Betta Home Living – Excellence in Retail; Safe Tasks – Excellence in Professional Services and Excellence in Business; La Bella Medispa – Excellence in Personal and Lifestyle Services; Parkes Shire Food Service – Excellence in Social Enterprise; Ray White – Excellence in Innovation; See Solar – Start-up Superstar; Kerin Physio Co – Highly Commended Start-up Superstar; Ashley Goulthorpe, Pink Orchid Florist – Outstanding Young Employee; Tracie Robertson, Ray White Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin – Business Leader; Rebecca Miller, La Bella Medispa – Highly Commended Business Leader; The Ken Birch Memorial Trophy was awarded to long time business owner Greg Peterson.

Meanwhile in Kiama Mayor Ken Keith OAM was honoured with the Cities Power Partnership (CPP) Ambassador Award at the inaugural CPP Awards. The Mayor was recognised for his commitment to renewable energy and his enthusiastic advocacy for solar power systems.

“I am overwhelmed to have been honoured with this award. Parkes was one of the founding member councils of the CPP, and I am delighted to see that it is going from strength to strength.”

The award was presented by Californian climate champion Rex Parris, who is the Mayor of Lancaster – the world’s first zero net energy city.

The CPP, an initiative of the Climate Council, was established to help Australian towns and cities make the change to clean energy. The awards celebrate the outstanding work of local governments in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport and community advocacy. More than 100 councils from across the country have signed up to the CPP.

Since 2011, Parkes Shire Council has installed 610kW solar systems across Council assets to reduce the organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate rises in Council’s power expenses.

Ashley Goulthorpe

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here?
I have lived in Parkes for the majority of my life. I love the friendly community and how people support each other.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work at the Pink Orchid Florist and Cafe as a florist. I enjoy working in such a colourful and supportive workplace full of fun people.

What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? In my spare time I enjoy reading, art and hosting dungeons and dragons campaigns.

What are you really good at? I’ve been told I’m really good at chatting!

If you could have a superpower what would it be? I think freezing time would be incredibly helpful, especially at work during our busy times of the year like Valentines Day!

What is your pet hate? My pet hate is when people are unnecessarily rude or when I’m so busy that my chai latte at work goes cold.

Tell us about your best holiday. My best holiday is yet to come, I’m going on a cruise to the Pacific Islands in January 2019! I’m very excited!

Giving You Goosebumps

October 25, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

What incredible talent Parkes M&D showcases in Goosebumps! Under the stage direction of the talented Lyn Townsend and the musical direction of the gifted Neil Westcott, a cast of more than 50 players transported the packed audience through a gamut of emotions.

The audience was treated to many magical memories in the beautifully refurbished theatre as tens of past shows were brought back to life infusing the stage with joy, laughter, sadness, anguish, melancholy, delight and nostalgia.

“We are truly blessed with the calibre of talent in Parkes,” said Lyn Townsend of her amazing team who moved many audience members to tears. An amazing team requires amazing direction. “Well yes,” Lyn admits, “ but I’m good at bossing them all around,”

Goosebumps is a celebration of Parkes theatre over the past 18 years, a true enrichment to the cultural landscape of our town.

Judging by the talent of the juniors coming up through the ranks, Parkes M&D will continue to flourish in the decades ahead. Limited seats available for this weekend’s performances. Don’t miss it!

Is Your ITB Tight?

October 25, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Do you sometimes feel a pain in your hip or the outside of your knee after sitting for a while? Maybe when you stand up or when you run? It could be that you have a tight Iliotibial Band (ITB).

The ITB is a thick band of fascia that runs down the outside thigh. It starts at the top of your pelvis, runs over the hip and attaches to the outside of the knee. It also attaches to some of the buttock and hip muscles allowing it to co-ordinate how these muscles work to stabilise the hip and knee. Fluid sacs, called bursae, located at the hip and knee, provide cushioning between the ITB and the bones beneath. If the ITB is tight it can irritate the bursae causing inflammation and pain.

An inflamed bursa at the hip is called a Greater Trochanteric Bursitis and at the knee it is known as ITB Friction syndrome or runner’s knee.

The ITB shortens when sitting for prolonged periods. It can also tighten if the muscle is overworked. This occurs with sudden increases in exercise load or volume, or if pelvic control is poor due to weak hip and glute muscles.
Because the ITB is a thick, fibrous band rather than an elastic muscle it requires a longer lighter stretch than most muscles. The use of a foam roller can also be quite helpful in increasing the flexibility in the ITB. A youtube search of “foam roller + ITB” will yield videos of how this can be done.

For the fitness of you

Red Bend Catholic College Has A Lot to Offer

October 25, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Red Bend Catholic College is a co-educational day and boarding school in Forbes with 750 students and 150 boarding places. In February 1977, the three Catholic education secondary schools combined to form one co-educational high school named Red Bend Catholic College.

Since then the College has expanded in numbers, teaching areas and facilities. The boarding accommodation, the swimming pool, the multi-purpose hall and performing arts centre, and the design and technology centre have complemented the strong characteristic features of the main college building.

For parent Trish Wilkins, whose children are boarders, the school works well for her children on academic, physical, emotional and spiritual levels. “We are able to trust that they are in good hands with the supportive attention the school and its staff offers them.”
