Two Major Hockey Events Next Year

September 14, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Hockey supporters will see some of the State’s best junior and senior hockey players next year when Parkes will host two of the 2018 Field State Championship tournaments at McGlynn Sporting Complex. The Over 50s Men’s Masters and the Under 15s Boys Championships will be held in May and June respectively to make Parkes the only regional town to host two Field State Championship tournaments next year.

Chair of the Sporting Facilities Development Committee, Cr Louise O’Leary said: “We are delighted to have secured two hockey tournaments for 2018, having recently made a significant investment in upgrading the hockey complex to enable Parkes to accommodate larger sporting events.”

The construction of a second hockey turf in 2016 has already delivered many positive benefits to the region by attracting major hockey tournaments and events to Parkes.

Parkes Open Has Strongest Field Ever

September 14, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Open Golf Tournament will see the strongest field in its 43-year history competing on Sunday. The SCT Logistics 27-hole event has attracted 144 players with 44 of them off handicaps of 8 or less. According to Parkes Golf
Club’s Tournament Director Paul Thomas this has forced officials to change the A grade field from its normal 10 handicap to the lower limit of 8.

The field also includes eight golfers off handicaps of square or better, while over half are off handicaps of 4 and below. The Harvey Norman B grade field will be for players on handicaps of 9 to 15, and the Video Brokers C grade field will be for players on handicaps of 16 to 27.

Three former winners will be playing with titleholder Steve Betland of Forbes, his brother John who plays Pennants out of the strong Moore Park Club in Sydney despite still residing in Forbes, and DuntryLeagues’ multiple winner Robert Payne.

Mudgee golfer Mark Hale will start as favourite slightly ahead of Robert Payne, and the Australian’s James Brownlow with the Betland brothers certain to be in the mix. The local club’s major hopes include reigning club champion Mitch McGlashan and Justin Sutton.

Sydney clubs have again supplied a large quantity of the field and it will be interesting to see how the strong field of visitors handle the undulating and tricky greens. In the minor grades, local players are hoping to gain success with Denis Howard, David Stevenson and junior golfer Lachlan Buesnell the major contenders in the Harvey Norman B grade restricted to players on handicaps of 9 to 15.

Spring Colours Parkes

September 14, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Spring is a vibrant time and the Parkes Shire Council is celebrating the new season with the launch of its Colour Parkes campaign. The aim is to encourage visitors to explore the region at a time when the bright yellow canola crops, the lush green fields of wheat and expansive blue skies make it an enjoyable experience.

The campaign was launched last Friday and will be promoted via television, billboards, social media and digital advertising until the end of October, and will be directed at visitors within a five-hour driving radius, specifically the Canberra region.

Council’s Brand & Marketing Manager, Katrina Dwyer said visitors could access special offers at local attractions, shopping outlets, accommodation and cafes, by downloading a Colour Pass from www.visitparkes.com.au

“The pass features 10 colour deals supplied by local tourism partners to entice visitors to extend their stay and spend longer in the Parkes region.” Visitors can also win a return visit to Parkes for an exclusive tour inside The Dish by sharing photos of their visit on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Use the hashtag #ColourParkes and tag @VisitParkesRegion to stand a chance to win the prize, including one night’s accommodation and meals for up to four people.

Encourage visiting friends, relatives or customers to join the social campaign. Images will be chosen based on the best representation of spring colour fun in the Parkes Region. The winner will be notified by 1st December.

With a background spanning rock, pop, classical, jazz, folk and bluegrass, Her much anticipated album Queen of Boomtown has burst into the music sphere living up to its name, as her voice booms at the right times, and sooths you tender moments. The King Cast In ‘Bronze’

September 7, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

From early next year Parkes will not only boast a Premier, but also a King! A statue of Elvis will go on permanent display in Cooke Park to ensure his legacy will forever live on in Parkes. Council has partnered with the Elvis Revival Inc (ERI) committee to commission a statue.

To tie in with the theme of existing public art, Terrance Plowright has been commissioned to construct the new statue – the same artist who sculpted Henry Parkes. Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith said: “The statue will be a fitting dedication to our hard-working Elvis Festival volunteer committee, and serve as a lasting legacy and recognition of their work to make the Parkes Elvis Festival what it is today.”

This project has been a long time in planning, with the ERI and Council working together for a number of years to bring Elvis to life. The President of ERI Nola Short said: “We are excited to see this project come to fruition as a thank you to our community for its support of the festival over the last 25 years.”

“We hope the statue will itself become a tourist attraction for Parkes, drawing visitors into the Cooke Park precinct not just during the Elvis Festival, but all year round.” Terrance has begun sculpting the statue in bronze, with the Elvis Revival Inc planning to hold the official unveiling during the 2018 Parkes Elvis Festival.

The Chase For The Henrys Is On

September 7, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

The Henrys Parkes Business Awards closed last Wednesday with a last minute dash by businesses submitting their online entries. With over 35 entries, the Parkes Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic with the response received. The diversity is a good representation of the broad spectrum of businesses in the community.

The Parkes Chamber of Commerce is excited to have so many entries in the ‘Best Business under 2 years’ and ‘Young Entrepreneur’ categories as this is really encouraging for the town to have so many young entrepreneurs. “It is invigorating to see that business people genuinely see the potential in the future development and prosperity of Parkes,” said Belinda McCorkell of the Chamber of Commerce.

The judging phase has begun with judges independently reviewing the submissions overseen by the NSW Business Chamber. Tickets for the gala presentation dinner on 20th October at the Parkes Services Club are on sale and can be obtained through the Henrys Parkes Business Awards Facebook page, the Parkes Chamber of Commerce website or the Parkes Services Club website. Limited tickets available so hurry on and get yours in time!

Our Bloke – Gary O’Brien

September 7, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Gary O’Brien

How long have you lived in Parkes and why do you like living here? I was born in Parkes and have lived here all of my life. It is such a progressive town and we are lucky to have such a friendly community. The way local business and people from all walks of life support our annual show is a great example of what a great place Parkes is to call home.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work on our family farming operation. I like the variety of tasks a mixed farm offers, being able to work outdoors, the interesting people you meet along the way and the other staff are pretty friendly too.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I don’t mind watching a good movie, going fishing and generally just hanging out with my gorgeous girlfriend Lou.

What are you really good at? I pretend to be really good at cooking but it doesn’t always work out. At the moment I am actually quite good at annoying people by singing the AA Blatch jingle all the time, it’s quite catchy.

If you could have a super power what would it be? Living a bit of distance out of town I think it would be pretty handy to be able to fly, quite the timesaver, not sure about the tights and cape though.

What is your pet hate? Despite having more tv channels than you can poke a stick at there are still times when it is impossible to find something worth watching.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. I have fond memories of family holidays with cousins to Forster. More recently we have explored the coastline around Newcastle, finding some nice little places you don’t hear much about.
