White Ribbons Signify Respect For Women

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Traffic came to a halt in the Parkes CBD on Monday morning with business owners leaving their shops to encourage a crowd of over 100 people marching down Clarinda Street in support of White Ribbon Day. Parkes is one of many communities across the country taking a stand to end domestic violence with the aim of creating ‘an Australian society where all women can live in safety, free from violence and abuse.’

Many local groups, clubs, schools and businesses were represented in the Parkes march from the Parkes Arbour to Cooke Park where the participants listened to speeches led by Lionel Lovett’s traditional Welcome to Country.

Police District Chief Inspector, David Cooper pledged continued police support in the area of domestic violence and asked for the public to assist by speaking out in order to challenge and change this problem. “This is a community issue not just a police issue. What you know and what you do could save someone’s life,” said Chief Inspector Cooper.

Some frightening and sobering statistics were presented by advocates against domestic violence: One in four women has experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner; one in five women have experienced sexual violence; one in two women have experienced sexual harassment; and one woman a week is murdered by a current or former partner.

Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton entreated the public saying: “Don’t just stand by. Stand up. And speak up.”

Elvis Enters Tourism Hall Of Fame

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Elvis Festival has won many awards, but entered new territory last Thursday at the 2018 NSW Tourism Awards at Luna Park in Sydney. It was named best festival in the State for the third consecutive year and inducted into the NSW Tourism Hall of Fame.

“To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is the icing on the cake for what has been the most successful year to-date for the Parkes Elvis Festival,” said Festival Director Cathy Treasure.

“It is also recognition of all the hard work and dedication of our fantastic volunteers, supporters and staff who have made the Festival what it is today.”

Parkes Elvis Festival was one of six finalists in the Festivals and Events category, taking home the title ahead of the Australian Celtic Festival, Canowindra International Balloon Challenge, Deni Ute Muster, Eat the Street Lismore and Woolgoolga Curryfest.

Parkes Shire Mayor, Councillor Ken Keith OAM said it was a stellar achievement for a community generated event that had significant economic impacts for Parkes and the wider Central NSW region.

The 2018 Festival attracted more than 25,000 visitors, had a global media reach of 200 million and injected $13 million into the regional economy. Parkes Elvis Festival has progressed to the national level at the QANTAS Australian Tourism Awards in Launceston on 1st March next year.

Mayoral Notes…

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Congratulations to the Parkes Elvis Festival team, committee and volunteers on being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2018 NSW Tourism Awards, having won the Festivals and Events category for three consecutive years. This is recognition of all the hard work and dedication of our fantastic volunteers, supporters and staff who have made the Festival what it is today.

The festive season is upon us with the annual Shop Parkes campaign commencing this week. The theme of this year’s
campaign is to ‘give a gift to the community’ by shopping locally. Throughout the festive season, we will be unwrapping 12  local Christmas special offers via the visit Parkes website and the Shop Parkes Facebook and Instagram pages. The campaign also coincides with the popular Sparkles Illuminations, Christmas Street Parade, Markets and Movie Night tonight.

For all details about the Shop Parkes campaign, and Christmas events, visit www.visitparkes.com.au.

Christmas is also a time to celebrate, so Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer is encouraging locals to have a Plan B in place. Plan B is a state-wide initiative encouraging punters to think about an alternative to driving home after a night out. During December, patrons at participating pubs, clubs and bottle shops will be invited to enter a competition to nominate a Plan B for getting home to go into the draw to win a swag.

Lachlan Health Council is encouraging local business, community and sporting organisations to register their Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) machines through the St John Ambulance defibrillator register, aed.stjohn.org.au. The St John’s defibrillator register is a national register to record the details and location of AEDs
throughout Australia, making the life saving devices more accessible.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend

Shop Parkes This Christmas

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Shop Parkes has your Christmas all wrapped up this year, with the highly anticipated annual retail campaign launching this week.

Parkes Shire Council and Parkes Chamber of Commerce have joined forces again to deliver the annual Shop Parkes this Christmas retail campaign, which aims to drive spend into the local economy over the festive season. The theme this year is to ‘give a gift to the community’ by shopping locally.

Parkes Chamber of Commerce President, Geoff Rice said: “This year we are encouraging shoppers to support the local business operators who support our community.”

“For each dollar spent at a local business, 45 cents is reinvested back into our community. Being a drought-affected community, it is especially important to help keep the money flowing throughout our region where possible.”

According to Parkes Council’s Economic & Business Development Manager, Anna Wyllie it’s been made simple, more accessible and affordable for businesses to participate in order to maximise the strength of the campaign and appeal of Parkes as a place to shop this Christmas.

“Shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of 12 Days of Christmas special offers  throughout the festive season from 29th November, that can be unwrapped and accessed via the Shop Parkes Facebook and Instagram pages, or the Visit Parkes website.”

“We are opening Christmas Central in the CBD for the first time where shoppers can have their gifts wrapped for free and complete an online survey to go into the draw to win a $500 Shop Parkes Region Gift Card.” For your chance to win, simply shop at any Parkes Shire retail outlet and complete the survey online via visitparkes.com.au or drop into Christmas Central. The lucky winner will be announced on Friday, 4th January 2019.

Christmas Central at 203 Clarinda Street Opening Hours: Thursdays 4pm – 7pm Saturdays 10am – 2pm.

Parkes Swimming Carnival

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Sharks swimmers have been training extremely hard since the start of the season in October for the annual carnival this weekend (1st and 2nd December). Swimmers from around the district will be taking part, which creates some stiff competition. Long distance events will be held on Saturday afternoon, which includes the 1500, 800 and 200 metre events.

The carnival is a qualifying meet for state and country times, which our swimmers are working hard to achieve. Over the last couple of months Parkes summers have attended swim meets in Canberra, Cowra and Forbes. All swimmers have achieved wonderful results and broke personal best times, which demonstrates their hard work and dedication to the sport.

The Parkes carnival is also a great opportunity for the up and coming swimmers to gain experience at a great venue in good company.

We wish all swimmers attending the carnival the best of luck and hoping that they achieve their personal best. A barbecue will be available on Sunday.

New Mining Office In Parkes

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Mines has opened a new office in Parkes for the Flemington Mining project near Fifield. The new office at 6/344-348 Clarinda Street, Parkes (formerly Video Ezy) opened in October, and will become the base for the Australian Mines team working on the Flemington project.

The local community is invited to drop in to the office between 9am and 12pm on Tuesday, 4th December to learn more about Australian Mines and the Fifield project. Exploration Manager Stuart Peterson and Community Engagement Officer Cindy Nutley will be on hand to discuss the project, including the short-term activities and long-term goals.

Australian Mines was formed in 2001 with nickel exploration and production as the initial focus. Now, Australian Mines is committed to becoming a significant producer of essential technology metals by bringing its cobalt-scandium-nickel ore bodies into production in the shortest possible time frame. These high value commodities are sought after by a range of technology manufacturing sectors, including the battery and transport industries.

The Flemington project near Fifield is in its early stages and is a direct continuation of the world-class Sunrise project being developed by CleanTeq, with the two projects separated only by a tenement boundary. Australian Mines has acquired 100% ownership of the exploration tenements and a mining lease application has been submitted. The project benefits from a secured, permanent water allocation to support a future mining operation.

The new office in Parkes has been established to support field operations ahead of the pre-feasibility study on the project, and reiterates the company’s recruitment principles of preferentially employing from the local community.

Call in any time during business hours if you are interested in the project and can’t make the drop-in session on Tuesday. Drop-in sessions are also planned at Trundle and Condobolin soon, with dates to be advised.

Our Bloke – Wally Biles

Wally Biles

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here?
I moved to Parkes 13 years ago, after having lived in Forbes for 21 years. Parkes is a great community with very good people. It is also a very sporty community. I used to play football here many years ago, and worked at the RTA.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I am the Youth Liaison Officer of the Crime Management Unit of the Parkes Police. I enjoy helping families and diverting kids from the justice system. It is very rewarding work.

What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? I am a mad gardener with my partner and also enjoy cooking and having friends over to enjoy the food with them. My favourite dish at the moment is paella.

What are you really good at? Communication with all levels of the community. I think I am a very understanding person.

If you could have a superpower what would it be? I would like to be able to instil a high level of education in people. An education is so important in life and I would like to be able to encourage parents to ensure their kids go to school.

What is your pet hate? Very loud environments, and also when the Rabbitohs suffer defeat. I am a Rabbitohs supporter through and through.

Tell us about your best holiday. Three years ago my partner and I went to Thailand and we cycled through villages meeting people and visiting schools. It was a very rewarding holiday and made us realise how blessed we are in Australia to have what we have here.

Deputy PM Impressed With Parkes Projects

November 29, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said Parkes Council was one of the most pro-active councils in Australia when he was in town last week to get an update on progress made with two major projects. “We want more businesses to decentralise  here, not just government agencies, but also private entities.”

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Federal Member for Riverina, first inspected the $3 million airport upgrade project where work is underway on extending the apron and taxi way expected to be completed by February next year.

“We want to make sure the 46% of international tourists who go to regional areas put Parkes on their bucket list as there are plenty of reasons for them to come here.” Michael McCormack also visited the site of Phase 2 of the Parkes Recycled Water Scheme in Nash Street. He said the new plant would have many flow-on benefits for the community.

“This scheme will result in a number of positive environmental outcomes, enabling 100% reuse of water waste.”
“Through the delivery of recycled water to sports grounds and public spaces, residents and visitors to Parkes will be able to enjoy lush drought-proof parks and gardens.”
