Fiery Talent At Carol Festival: Former Organist at St George’s Anglican Church, Richard Morgan, will again make the trip from Sydney for the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at his former church on Sunday, 16th December starting at 7:30pm. Richard will also be conducting an organ recital of Christmas tunes from 7pm. This year he will be accompanied by Rebecca Wilson, solo cornet for the NSW Fire and Rescue Band. The evening will feature a mix of carols, old and new, with local a capella group Tapestry. The service is specifically designed to lead the audience through the plan that God has for the world. Starting with creation, the carols track
through the various promises God made to his people, and prophecies, until its culmination in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s= son, who was crucified to bring us back into a relationship with God, after we had fallen out of it and the Garden of Eden. The format is based on the service performed each year at King’s College Cambridge, based on a service devised by the former
Archbishop of Canterbury, Arthur Benson in 1880.

Country Music Christmas Charity Muster: Santa will be at the muster tomorrow (Saturday) at the Starlight Lounge at the Parkes Services Club at 7:30pm. There will also be a Lucky Members Draw, Christmas  nibbles, dancing, kiddies prizes and walkup performers. Proceeds will go to Parkes Can Assist. All Welcome. At the AGM in November the following people were elected: Margaret Thurn – president; Lindy Charlton – vice-president; Lyn Pengilly – secretary; Frances Charlton – treasurer; Di Capes – assistant treasurer; publicity committee – Lindy Charlton, Chris Cox and Dale Cowell; artist co-ordinators – Chris Cox, Lyn Pegilly, Margaret Cowell and Di Capes; fundraising committee – Margaret Thurn, Frances Charlton, Christine De Dobbelaar and Lyn Pengilly. Planning of the 2019 calendar of events is underway and includes a visit from the South Coast CMA on the St Patrick’s Day weekend 16/17th March and the annual Mother’s Day function on 12th May. “We wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and safe New Year.”

Last 2018 Issue: Next Friday, 21st December will be the last issue of The Parkes Phoenix for the year! We will be back for the Parkes Elvis Festival with a special issue out on Thursday, 10th January.

Mayoral Notes

A momentous occasion occurred yesterday for Parkes Shire, and indeed the nation, with the first sod turned on the Inland Rail project by Deputy Prime Minster The Hon. Michael McCormack MP.

Congratulations to Paul and Emma Brown and their team on the fantastic Carols in the Park on Sunday. It was great to see a fresh approach that was welcomed by the hundreds who enjoyed a night of community spirit and festive cheer.

After opening the first Australian 24-hour public library in Tullamore in September 2016, the Trundle 24-hour library was officially opened last Friday. With Christmas just over a week away, Council is pleased to give the community a special gift this Christmas with the launch of the Shop Parkes gift card program.

Parkes Shire Council has partnered with Why Leave Town Promotions. As this program is just being rolled out, we are working on getting more local retailers and service providers on board, and would like to hear from any business keen to be part of the program. Head to www.visitparkes.com.au
for more information.

A reminder that the Parkes Waste Facility is holding a free tip weekend tomorrow and Sunday. For more information on what can be disposed of, visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend

Young Conductor Debuts At Carols

December 13, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Lachlan Regional Orchestra conductor Ben Mcpherson
with Matthias Kelly at Cooke Park on Sunday.

The Carols in the Park preshow on Sunday was a very special occasion for one young member of the Lachlan Regional Orchestra. Eighteen-year-old Matthias Kelly from Trundle conducted the orchestra for the very first time in public after a five-week internship under the orchestra’s conductor
Ben Macpherson.

“I was fairly nervous, but it went pretty well and the orchestra played well,” said Matthias of his debut performance as a conductor. Matthias is a viola player in the orchestra and was able to do the training with a Charles Sturt University (CSU) grant.

Five other members of the orchestra are excited to have received scholarships to attend the Sydney Youth Orchestra Summer School in Sydney from 7th to 11th January. They are Reuben Kelly (cello) Gracie Mcfadyen (clarinet), Carmel Kelly (violin), Simeon Kelly (Bassoon) and Anton Mcfadyen (violin).

Festive Cheer ‘Rains’ On Christmas Parade

December 6, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The streets were lined with masses of people, the floats sparkled in the late afternoon sun and an air of excitement prevailed as the annual Christmas Parade set the tone for the festive season in Parkes last Friday.

The 30 float entries, including two ponies, the Rural Fire Service and a dragon boat, and 300 plus students marching for their schools created an ocean of Christmas colours as the procession flowed down the street cheered on by the crowds.

Some people remarked it was the biggest crowd seen in Parkes after the Elvis Parade in January each year.

“It was an outstanding success,” said Peter Guppy of Parkes Action Club, who organises the parade. “The Action Club
would like to thank everyone who put a lot of effort into their floats.”

Geoff Rice from the Parkes Chamber of Commerce, who judged the float entries, said they were all of a high standard. The TWW $300 voucher for best business float was awarded to McPhersons, and the school prize of $100 went to Parkes Christian School.

The Action Club also thanked the SES for doing an excellent job of crowd control, and the students for their exemplary behaviour. “The Parkes community is to be congratulated for supporting the parade and enjoying this great community event,” said Peter.

Parkes Turns 145 As Festive Season Gets Underway

December 6, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

There was singing and partying in the street last Saturday as Parkes celebrated its 145th birthday. The informal birthday bash was held at Christmas Central in Clarinda Street and many of the town’s citizens stopped by to join the party.

Councillor Bill Jayet, surrounded by some very excited children, cut the huge cake and shared it with the crowd, while Sharon Klarner and Katrina Newham handed out party hats and whistles. Jenny Short took time off from Christmas Central’s free giftwrapping service to join the party.

“It was great to be able to play the big kid again,” said Bill, “and share such a big birthday cake on such a milestone event.”

Local busker and Parkes High School student Hannah Dun lent her amazing voice to add a beautiful touch to the atmosphere of the celebration. Hannah, who at 13 years of age has won runner-up in the Australian National Busking Competition for the last two years running, was delighted to accept Council’s invitation to sing at the town’s
birthday event.

The area of Parkes, first known as Currajong and later as Bushmans, began to flourish in 1862 with the discovery of gold. Then, 145 years ago on the first of December 1873, the town was renamed Parkes after Sir Henry Parkes, then Premier of NSW, and the main street was named after his wife, Lady Clarinda.

Happy Birthday Parkes!

Benefits Of Inland Rail Deliver Hope

December 6, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The future looks promising for Parkes as benefits of the Inland Rail Project are starting to flow to local businesses. With the Parkes to Narromine (P2N) section of the project due to commence in the near future, the joint venture INLink, engaged by Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) have started to mobilise in Parkes.

A broad range of opportunities are already available in the Central West, while there have been local procurement opportunities for a range of service providers such as signage services, personal protective equipment and furniture and office appliances in Parkes.

“It has been a long-term vision of the Parkes community to see our town as a national logistics hub and the Inland Rail project is the major link in the chain that will start to see this vision realised,” said Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager Kent Boyd.

According to ARTC Project Director Colin Ford INLink had very positive responses from the community with more than 380 expression of interest (EOI) registrations from local companies, partnerships and sole traders. “INLink have been working with them throughout the process to understand the kind of variable skills and opportunities to price work that is available.

“An extensive list of services will be required which will include, but is not limited to, concrete supply services, transportation, fencing, earthmoving, drainage, electrical works, concrete works, security and water bore drilling,” said Colin. “There will also be a positive flow-on effects for motels, retailers, cafes, restaurants and a range of service providers.

“We are looking forward to securing the right people and businesses who have the capacity, skills and experience to deliver the work on-time, on-budget and with minimal disruption to the community.”

Marvellous Makeover For Carols In The Park

December 6, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Carols in the Park has been a well-established tradition in the Parkes community for a long time, and this year it is getting a makeover!

The popular event will still have all the hallmarks of Carols in the Park as you know and love it, but it was time to step outside the box and bring an increasingly engaging, entertaining and inclusive event to the community.

This Sunday, Carols in the Park will have a big screen with song words and video content, free souvenir programs and an extended event. The most exciting addition is the two-hour preshow from 4:30pm called Carols in the Arvo featuring local musical acts performing Christmas songs in their own style.

Four unique and eclectic acts will be performing including the Doug Richards Trio jazz band, the Lachlan Regional Orchestra and gospel-soul singer Belinda Boland. In addition, alt-country singer songwriter Raechel Whitchurch will be joining the preshow stage from 6pm.

Raechel and her husband, Ben, will be performing favourite Christmas songs in their signature chilled-out Americana style. “Parkes is an incredibly special place to me,” said Raechel. It is my husband’s hometown, it is where my family and I settled after years of travelling Australia, and it is where I feel most at home. Ben and I feel so lucky to have been asked to come home and perform some songs at this year’s event!”

Carols in the Park will begin at 4:30pm for the Carols in the Arvo preshow, Parkes Shire Concert Band will perform from 6:30pm and the Community Carols will start at 7:30pm. BBQ food, snow cones, barista coffee and baked goods will be on sale until 7:30pm.

Parkes Carols in the Park is sponsored by BDN Kitchens & Joinery and presented in partnership with Parkes Shire Council.
