Roll On Regatta Season

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Regatta season began earlier than usual for a keen group of 13 Lachlan Dragons who travelled to Victoria at the weekend seeking a race. Although this venue is not usually on the calendar for Forbes, Regatta Coordinator Deb Abela, worked hard to get a team together for this early start. “It was a great way to kick off the season,” said Forbes Dragon Boat Club President, Bill Thomas, “with lots of fun and camaraderie, as well as some serious racing.”

Carmen Stephens, Lachlan Dragons’ Head Coach, was very pleased with the effort of the group. The Albury-Wodonga regatta will put the Lachlan Dragons in a very good position for racing at the upcoming Western Region Regatta at Lake Canobolas early in November. Nominations for community teams are still being taken for this regatta.

So if you’d like something special for your workplace to be involved in, call Bill or Beth Thomas on 0418 253 045 to get trained up for the day.

If you’d like to know more about dragon boating or about the Forbes club, find us on Facebook or on www.forbesdragonboat.org.

Almost 30 Players In New Tennis Comp

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

As the warmer weather approaches it’s a great time of year to be playing tennis. This week a new group of budding stars were in action on Wednesday at the start of the inaugural ANZHotShots red ball competition. Almost 30 contenders hit the courts with an abundance of enthusiasm along with mild trepidation, but after their half hour of
play they were all smiles.

With the assistance of Parkes junior squad members who were on hand to help the next generation start their tennis journey, the youngsters concentrated hard to direct their serves cross court and tried their best to comprehend the tennis scoring system.

There were plenty of rallies with most of the players running around to hit their preferred forehands in fear of a wayward backhand stroke, but all displayed their eagerness to return next week for more HotShots match play.
The competition will run for another six weeks.

9 to 5 Is A Dolly Good Show

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Although the latest Parkes M & D production is about the downtrodden working life of three women, it promises not to be a drag. Featuring music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 is set in the late 1970s and is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge that is thought-provoking, outrageous and even a little romantic.

“It is a relatable story and still relevant today,” said Angie Drooger who plays the role of Violet. Her co-stars are Brittani Carol as Judy and Erin O’Leary as Duralee. They work for Franklin Hart, played by Greg Ballantyne, who is a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.

“Some of the scenes I felt right at home as it was so similar to my real life work situation,” said Angie. “But we do get up to some crazy antics like kidnapping our boss, which is probably very unusual.” According to Angie this high-energy show with lots of fun is ideal for all ages. “My three-year-old son watched the whole show.” It is rated PG.

The cast of 19, with mostly females, is a good mix of adults and students. The cast includes some new faces while the lead roles are all played by local actors cast in previous shows. The majority are from Parkes, but one came all the way from Western Australia, and three are from Forbes.

“The audience will not only relate to the story, but there are lots of good songs by Dolly Parton, including the hit theme song,” said Angie. The 9 to 5 cast and production team have once again pulled together and worked long hours to make it a true community effort.

The musical will run at the Little Theatre in Parkes from tonight until 28th October. Tickets are available online at www.parkesmandd.com.au.

Our Gal – Barbara Newton

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Barbara Newton

How long have you lived in Parkes and why do you like living here? I have lived in the Parkes Shire for just on 19 years, in the town of Tullamore. I enjoy living here because of the people. It is so lovely to have a sense of real belonging. We support each other when required and people acknowledge each other. I also love the
space around me.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have ‘retired’ from my profession as a registered nurse – a profession I have always been very passionate about and continue to be so. I was also in professional theatre – a great time of my life with very cherished memories. I would have to say my work now is as a shire councillor, currently in the position of Deputy Mayor. My time on council has been very challenging and rewarding. I am very proud of the council and all staff. Parkes Shire Council really is an exemplary council.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like my happy hour! I think to spend time with my husband and family and friends is my usual relaxation. I do enjoy a good book and a murder mystery on TV.

What are you really good at? I suppose the skill I have that stands out is that I sing. This is something I have done since very small. I must say my repertoire has changed since moving out west.

If you could have a super power what would it be? I think I would love to be able to fly, very fast so I could get to my family in London and Sydney quickly whenever I wanted or needed to go. It would be great to be able to make people tolerant and kind as well.

What is your pet hate? I think my pet hate is meanness and cruelty. So much in our world and so destructive.

Tell us about your best holiday ever? It is hard to pick one holiday, but driving over to Perth from Sydney when our children were young teenagers was a great holiday and still brings many a laugh when we remember it.

Think Before Using The Red Bin

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes residents are using the three-bin system effectively by correctly separating waste to reduce landfill. Findings from the waste audit conducted in March indicated a significant decrease in the contamination of recycling and compostables since the introduction of the three-bin system in April last year.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director Planning and Environment, Steven Campbell said: “Contamination of the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin is only 1.1%, while the yellow lid recycling bin recorded a contamination level of just 5%.

“This indicates locals are making concerted efforts to ensure they are correctly disposing of recyclables and organic matter into the correct bins.” While progress has been made in reducing the contamination of the yellow and
green lid bins, Steven said there was still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the general waste bin.

“Changing to a fortnightly collection has been a huge success, with the red lid bin filled to 80% of capacity on average.” “However, the results showed that contamination of the red lid bin remains very high, with compostable matter making up 53% of the overall composition of the general waste bin, and recyclables totalling 23%.”

Residents are encouraged to be mindful when disposing of food scraps and recyclables as organic matter can be processed into mulch, and recycled material will be processed and manufactured into new products, when separated into the correct bin.

The aim of the audit was to identify opportunities for diversion and to identify where Parkes Shire residents can improve. A total of 220 residences were sampled as part of the audit. The three-bin kerbside collection system was introduced to recover more recyclables and organic material from entering the landfill stream.

Teeth-Friendly Snacks For Your Child’s Lunch

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

A nutritious meal at lunchtime isn’t just important to give your child an energy boost to finish their school day – it can make a big difference in their overall and oral health. If you’re concerned about expenses, packing a healthy lunch doesn’t have to be costly. Here are a few ideas to help fill your child’s lunchbox with tooth-friendly snacks
that won’t break the bank.

PICKING THE RIGHT SNACKS
• Choose bacteria fighters. Crunchy vegetables like celery, apples or carrots require more chewing which produces increased saliva to attack bacteria in your child’s mouth.
• Sneak in Vitamin C. Proper Vitamin C intake is important for a healthy immune system and our overall health, but it also plays a part in keeping gums healthy. Opt for an orange or red pepper.
• Say no to juice. Instead of packing a juice box in your child’s lunch, consider a small water bottle or milk. Water is
great for rinsing away debris as well as keeping your child hydrated, while milk is packed full of calcium which is essential for healthy bones.
• Bonus tip: Cheese is another great way to get calcium into your child’s lunch – chop a block into cubes for fun, bitesized snacks.

HEALTHY LUNCH
• Involve your child in packing their lunch so they can learn about the importance of making healthy choices.
• If your child purchases their lunch at school, talk with them about making healthy choices for their teeth and overall wellness, and don’t forget to schedule their next appointment with Richardson Dental Surgery on 6862 1261.

Field Days At Borenore For the Whole Family

October 12, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

The very first Australian National Field Days (ANFD) at Borenore were celebrated 66 years ago in 1952 – as a one-day event only. “We are committed to advancing Australian agriculture and we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to do that, whether that be through utilising new technology and social media, or simply moving part of our event to a weekend so people who work off-farm can attend,” said Administration Manager Jayne West.

A big key to this year’s event is ensuring that there is something on offer for the whole family. There will be entertainment for everyone with music playing throughout the day from Mickey Pye, Casey McFarlane and The
Hewitt’s. There will also be a jumping castle, camel rides and a high adrenaline action show from Flair Action Riders.

This year’s feature exhibit is one to be enjoyed by all, the Australian Stock Horse Society. They will be conducting talks throughout the three-day field day about their importance to agriculture and will inform the public about products and services they may not have known about.

“Livestock and grazing are very important here, and we are on the fringe of a very large cropping area. There’s a lot of horticulture in the region with apples and cherries and viticulture is another area rapidly growing,” said Jayne.

The Australian National Field Days will be held from Thursday, 26th to Saturday, 28th October 2017, at 563 Borenore Road, Borenore. Gates will open at 8:30am and close at 5pm over the three days. A full program is available online.

To all our Phoenix readers, don’t forget to enter our competition to go into the draw to win a double pass to the ANFD.
