Mayoral Notes…

December 7, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Congratulations to the organisers of Peak Hill’s Meet You Up The Street Festival on delivering another successful event. Thank you to those residents who joined the conversation about the planned projects for Peak Hill, including the Main Street Tree Proposal, and installation of new fitness and playground equipment. The proposals and an online survey are under the Public Notice section on Council’s website until 5pm, Friday, 15th December – www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Last Friday’s wild weather saw the popular Christmas Street Parade and Sparkles Markets and Movie Night called off. While the Street Parade will not be rescheduled due to conflicting community events, the Parkes Action Club must be commended for their hard work organising the event.

The Markets and Movie Night has been rescheduled to Saturday, 16th December from 5pm. Be sure to check out the
Sparkles Illuminations when the sun goes down, with some exciting new locations added this year. The Parkes Shire community is invited to celebrate the festive season and sing your favourite Christmas carols in Parkes and Bogan Gate. In Parkes the Carols in Cooke Park starts at 6.30pm, and the Bogan Gate Carols in the Memorial Hall will be from 7.30pm.

Gift a book this Christmas at Parkes Shire Libraries! The books will be donated to the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation for schools in remote parts of northern Australia. Purchase a book for a child between 0 and 12 years old, wrap it up, place a tag on it with the child’s age on it and place it under the tree at any of our libraries. For more information visit Council’s website.

Have a safe and festive weekend,
Cr Ken Keith OAM

Everyone is invited to watch the festive floats make their way down Clarinda Street and into Cooke Park for Sparkle in the Park Upmarkets. Don’t forget to pack the picnic blanket, with the outdoor cinema screening the Christmas classic, The Santa Claus 2. As the sun goes down, local buildings and shops will become a colourful canvas

Peak Hill will also be celebrating the festive season today at the annual Meet You Up The Street Festival – with street stalls, music, shopping and family fun taking place until midnight. Come say hello to our Council staff and join the conversation about planned projects for Peak Hill, in the Commercial Gardens between 12 and 3pm. For more information visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Today marks the start of Parkes Shire Library’s Summer Reading Club. The goal for this year is for members to read 974 books between 1st December and 31st January. The winner will be announced on the Shop Parkes Facebook page on Friday, 5th January 2018.

Council is delighted to have received a second prestigious accolade for the Water and Sewage Treatment renewal projects, presented with the Sustainable Systems Award at the Blue Star Awards conference in Maitland on Saturday.

This week we joined representatives from Pacific National as they announced an initial $35 million to commence development of the company’s Parkes Logistics Terminal within the Parkes Logistic Hub. Pacific National’s investment has been triggered by the first stage of construction of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project between Parkes and Narromine valued at $300 million, part of the Australian Government’s $8.4 billion commitment. The terminal will generate 50 full time jobs, and provide up to 20 new skilled jobs in the future, including train drivers and terminal workers.

Council has identified the first round of projects to be submitted under the Stronger Country Communities Fund. Those projects include upgraded seating at The Little Theatre, more shared pathways to link recreational precincts and the upgrade of the Community Hall at the old hospital site. Parkes Aquatic Centre has launched new Aqua Aerobics classes for all ages and abilities.

The pool will run two 45-minute sessions on Tuesdays at 7.15am and 7.15pm, for $10 a class. This initiative aims to encourage members of our community to live active, healthy lifestyles.

I am delighted to share the news that Parkes Shire Council was named the winner of the Water Management Award Division A category at the LGNSW Excellence in the Environment Awards held this week. Council received the award based on the delivery and sustainable management of the Parkes Integrated Water Infrastructure Renewal projects, which includes construction of the new Water Treatment Plant, refurbishment of Bore 8 and the Lachlan Pump Station, and construction of the Advanced Water Recycling Facility.

Council received funding under the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund to revitalise two popular community spaces in the Shire. PAC Park South in Parkes and Lindner Oval in Peak Hill will both receive upgrades, with both projects awarded $50,000 each. Parkes Library is inviting the community to attend a free talk with Jeremy Godwin, author of the book Mental Illness Sucks! (But It’s Not The End Of The World), on Monday 23 October. If you’d like to attend, give Parkes Library a call on 6861 2309 to book your spot.

Today is the final day teams can register for the 2017 GP Cup on 28th October. Teams of 10 will compete in soccer, netball, touch football and a mystery event over the course of one action packed day at McGlynn Park. Download a nomination pack from Council’s website.

As Chair of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Alliance (MBIRA), I welcomed the news of Federal Government’s determination of the preferred Queensland section of the Inland Rail.

The preferred section, which runs via Pittsworth, Brookstead and the Wellcamp-Charlton industrial precinct, will inject billions of dollars into these regional economies.

The announcement adds certainty to the project. ARTC recently called for contractors for the Parkes to Narromine section of the line. For more information visit www.inlandrail.com.au

Parkes Shire residents are encouraged to preserve the rich history of the region by taking up the opportunity to gain free advice from Parkes Shire Council’s Heritage Advisor who can give free professional advice on renovating or redeveloping private homes or commercial buildings. For more information contact Council’s Planning & Environment Department on 6861 2373.

The ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme are inviting local businesses to register for phase eight to run from 1st March to 31st May 2018. The closing date is Friday, 6th October. If your business would like to participate, contact Melanie Suitor on 6861 2364 or Melanie.Suitor@parkes.nsw.gov.au

As we welcome in the October Long Weekend, I encourage the community and visitors to enjoy all the Parkes Region has to offer including the 50th year of the 2PK Country Music Awards and the annual Parkes Antique Motorcycle Rally.

This week I joined residents of the Peak Hill community for the official unveiling of the new Peak Hill Community Wall art installation in the Commercial Gardens. The artworks currently showing are those by Wiradjuri artist and Peak Hill resident, Scott “Sauce” Towney. The Community Wall is an extension to the Parkes Shire public art series, developed to interchange over time and celebrate cultural and artistic diversity within the community.

Only one week to go until residents and visitors can dive into the swim season, with the Parkes Aquatic Centre opening its gates on Saturday, 30th September at 10am. Get in early and pick up a season ticket from the Poolside Café from Monday, 25th September. Council is also taking enrolments for the 2017/18 Parkes Learn to Swim program, with enrolment forms available for download via our website, www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Ahead of the start of the swim season, Council contractors have installed new solar lighting at the Parkes Aquatic Centre. This is good news for our early morning swimmers, as it now means they won’t have to navigate their way through the complex in the dark. The light poles have been installed either side of the pathway from the amenities building right up to the pools, significantly improving safety for pool users.

With the school holidays just around the corner, a reminder to take advantage of the colourful landscapes, fun events and iconic attractions the Parkes Shire region has to offer by getting involved in the Colour Parkes campaign. Download your Colour Pass from www.visitparkes.com.au to gain exclusive access to eleven special offers from local attractions, accommodation, cafes and shopping outlets as part of the Colour Parkes campaign. These can be redeemed from participating businesses until 31st October 2017.

Yours Faithfully,
Cr Ken Keith OAM
